dcbadacd··on Why we don't use Galileo's last name (2009)
In Estonia we have an personal identification code, it is never used as authentication, only for differentiating between people, we have Estonian ID card for authentication and identification.
dcbadacd··on The world in which IPv6 was a good design (2017)
It'll only take another 50 years :')
dcbadacd··on Google AMP Issue: Links to visit the site currently not working
Which publishers is the control taken away? You're claiming news outlets have to be super afraid of punishment if they don't do AMP. That's empirically false, many news outlets dominate (or share the dominance) markets without doing any AMP. I don't necessarily like AMP, but claiming it's the (paraphrased) "worst thing after the black plague" is also dishonest, working on alternative solutions would be the right thing to do here.
dcbadacd··on Google AMP Issue: Links to visit the site currently not working
Signed exchanges are a thing, I don't see how Google intervenes there more than just providing the AMP standard.
dcbadacd··on Google AMP Issue: Links to visit the site currently not working
But giving the control of the traffic to some third party website is okay? Not really. Especially not really with signed exchanges.
dcbadacd··on Google AMP Issue: Links to visit the site currently not working
They're working on signed exchanges, you'll soon see the "real URL" of the content.
dcbadacd··on Google AMP Issue: Links to visit the site currently not working
They could, but then we'd see a lot of cheaters even there, AMP is very locked down. I don't like the market position abuse either, but the other parties are far from guilt free.
dcbadacd··on Google AMP Issue: Links to visit the site currently not working
Unfortunately site owners haven't debloated without AMP. "Reader Mode" is much less perfect than a proper AMP page.
dcbadacd··on Google AMP Issue: Links to visit the site currently not working
How is using an external service to debloat pages okay but AMP isn't? Feels ass-backwards to me.
dcbadacd··on Support for U2F security keys
In Bitwarden, yes.
dcbadacd··on The PS1 Game Spongebob Squarepants: Supersponge Violates the GPL
GPL is harmful to developer freedoms but incredibly beneficial to user freedoms. Please do not conflate the two.
dcbadacd··on The PS1 Game Spongebob Squarepants: Supersponge Violates the GPL
In practice, letting things run their own course ("nothing changes") one of the methods of resolving the issue, indeed.
dcbadacd··on The PS1 Game Spongebob Squarepants: Supersponge Violates the GPL
So there's two options, either the software is released GPL or they have no right to use the source and it's in violation and has to be resolved?
dcbadacd··on The PS1 Game Spongebob Squarepants: Supersponge Violates the GPL
Well, it's not freeing software unless they release the game GPL, if they don't then they're just illegally using GPL source code making the source far from anything free.
dcbadacd··on Sign In with Apple [video]
Can you please cite where it says that? OAuth requires API keys, I don't see how you could get those without anything Apple-related.
dcbadacd··on Sign In with Apple [video]
Unless this becomes open for everyone, even for web devs that do not specifically have an Apple device and Apple Developer Licence, I do not see it getting far.
dcbadacd··on The PS1 Game Spongebob Squarepants: Supersponge Violates the GPL
The archivist in me loses this fight, I feel general adhering to software freedoms is more important and the greater good compared to a single game.
dcbadacd··on The PS1 Game Spongebob Squarepants: Supersponge Violates the GPL
I'm pretty sure the answer is "yes" if the violation is true and the game has been distributed. Tit for tat.
dcbadacd··on Open Source Game Clones
You can play using a "minimum" requirement PC as well. Out of all the things getting heavier, some remake opting in to better visuals is not the one you should be calling a "monstrocity".
dcbadacd··on China Prepares to Drop Microsoft Windows, Blames U.S. Hacking Threat
"The Stallman lingo" has unfortunately been correct far too many times to call it "not helpful". A spying "feature" built by third parties that ends up with the same end result than one built by first party then it doesn't matter who made it.
dcbadacd··on China Prepares to Drop Microsoft Windows, Blames U.S. Hacking Threat
But analytics in an OS is spyware, doesn't matter who does it.
dcbadacd··on Aerc – An email client that runs in the terminal
Native player in Chrome doesn't seem to download videos in big enough chunks or doesn't buffer well enough for smooth playback in some cases. I've seen it several times myself.
dcbadacd··on Use zsh as the default shell on your Mac
That would violate GPLv3, wouldn't it?
dcbadacd··on Use zsh as the default shell on your Mac
The "You must release changes"-clause and anti-tivoization clause might be not be enough individually to switch to MIT zsh but probably were together good enough reasons for Apple to switch.
dcbadacd··on Apple Sign In
Signal requires a phone number. If anything, use Keybase, you'll also get good team handling, file sharing and bunch of other nice convinience features.
dcbadacd··on Apple Sign In
Bitwarden seems to work quite nicely as well but in addition to that Bitwarden is open-source.
dcbadacd··on Apple Sign In
Some screenshots display that it also works on the web, I'd love to find out how exactly but I ain't buying an Apple device and a developer license for that.
dcbadacd··on Apple Sign In
Unfortunately there's no way to implement this as a OAuth2 flow and without having an Apple device. Seems unreasonable to require an Apple dev account just for providing sign up - it can be tested without installing apps or just borrowing an iPhone.
dcbadacd··on How to use array reduce for more than just numbers
Slow machines aren't good to just easily notice bad websites, they're also good to notice bad server-side code and native apps.
dcbadacd··on Lack of leadership in open source results in source-available licenses
Linux uses GPL, it kind-of forces the tit-for-tat relationship.
