dbuxton··on Why are you so sure I'll lose?
Ah ok I see what you mean.

I think what we have today (weak ML) are models which can be trained to operate at the quality of a human for specific tasks.

So I am definitely terrified by the recidivism example, because it’s not obvious to me that there is a human who can do that task, but I’m pretty relaxed about the coverage one (because presumably at least in principle if you automate these sorts of manual tasks you can drive down the cost of providing care - if that saving passed on to consumer).

The image recognition one is a bit more complicated but if your scenario is targeting a hellfire missile I’m not sure the human-in-the-driving-seat method has created good outcomes so far, so I’m at least in principle open to some level of AI involvement perhaps short of full autonomy.

But I can definitely understand the problem of incentives. Ultimately we have that issue with humans though and it’s in some respects harder to audit them.

Genuine question - can a topic really be `opertunistic` or is that author typo? I love these `referer`-type misspellings that become fossilized over generations

JustParent | Front-end engineer | Full-stack engineer | London, UK or REMOTE | Full time

JustParent is creating a new standard for family-friendly companies, starting by making it as easy as SaaS for companies to offer affordable parental leave with an insurance-backed cost cap. Kicking off in the UK in 2023 but with global ambitions.

Our goal is to eliminate the gender pay gap and make SMEs competitive for employees at the most productive stages of their careers.

We’re building beautiful, easy-to-use software that makes our proposition super easy to understand and buy. As part of that we’re building a small engineering team to work with our technical founder (that’s me!) that will be responsible for modeling, integration with HRIS tools and platform delivery.

If creating a more equal world for our daughters and sons sounds like a meaningful project drop an email to founders@justparent.co.uk with a link to open-source profile, your portfolio, or an old-fashioned CV. (Sorry, no website yet, we’re _so_ stealthy)

Have you looked at Workflowy (https://workflowy.com/)? Allows you to share a subtree of your overall knowledge universe, works on all platforms, etc.
dbuxton··on Show HN: Pony – a messenger for mindful correspondence
I did something a little similar to this with Apps Script to deliver my non-urgent email (everything except from a few approved senders) once in the morning and once in the evening.

It's only a slight exaggeration to say that it has changed my life!

If anyone is interested I'll dig out the code and share.

dbuxton··on Ask HN: How to negotiate stock options?
Even if you have the same class of stock, vesting, good/bad leaver provisions and strike price make that a false comfort. Remember that you don't typically get stock itself but rather options to buy stock.

However if you _don't_ have the same class of stock that _is_ a pretty good sign that you're going to be last in line.

dbuxton··on Ask HN: Where would you incorporate in 2021?
Pre-investment, you should basically balance the administrative hassle and financial burden of incorporating in the US - specifically, Delaware with the decreased friction of fundraising for a US topco.

Cons of DE:

  - US lawyers are the worst both in terms of quality and cost
  - You may need local sub to employ you
  - If you're not in the US you may struggle to open a bank account etc in your local jurisdiction
Pros of DE:

  - Everyone knows how to invest in a DE C-Corp no matter how early stage
  - Many tax advantages for investors can be maintained (e.g. EIS for UK taxpayers)
  - Lots of nice tooling for doing company secretarial stuff (e.g. Carta)
Once you have enough cash not to worry too much about the odd moderately expensive and opaque advisory bill for something you never knew you needed, the US looks more and more attractive strategically. To the extent that some people think there shouldn't even be a debate (e.g. https://medium.com/angularventures/us-incorporation-just-do-...)

dbuxton··on A Medieval British Anti-Counterfeiting System: Split Tally Sticks (2017)
On the dollar bills: I've always wondered how the "rip it in half" strategy works in practice given that getting it precisely right is hard and presumably the person with 50+% can cash in for full face value (see https://www.bep.gov/resources/faqs.html). Did people really do this?

dbuxton··on 15 states are trying to make the electoral college obselete
However, it's not clear there's anything that small states can do about this (other than make sure that this doesn't get passed in states making up a majority of EC votes).

The states that would arguably be stupid to go for this are actually the purple ones rather than the large or small ones, because they are the ones that are currently the focus of presidential campaigning but they would no longer be if there was a mechanism for making the EC reflect popular vote. That's perhaps why Colorado may remove itself (see https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-movement-to-skip-th...)

OP doesn’t mean

“For some people it’s better to have no job than a bad job”

(Maybe that’s true but as you say it’s their choice to make)

He is saying:

“For society, it’s actually harmful that we paper over the cracks of giving people on the margins of society confidence in how they can economically contribute and get meaning with unsustainable “jobs” rather than society actually being forced to confront this problem”.

dbuxton··on How I Taught My Kid to Read
I agree with this, however to be pedantic even in Serbian (or BCS more generally) there are some homographs (in ordinary orthography at least) which are not complete homophones - the classic example being grâd "city" / gràd "hail". It's definitely not ghoti though ;)

dbuxton··on Investor Funnels for Series As
I would be curious (maybe @akharris can clarify) whether "average" in this case is the mean, mode or median...

I'd guess median because if the mean it appears that (cf parent) each company got exactly 1 term sheet, which does seem genuinely surprising if more or less the entirety of both cohorts succeeded in raising a round on some terms.

dbuxton··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2019)
Arachnys | KYC / AML automation | Frontend, Backend, QA | London, Kyiv (Onsite) | https://www.arachnys.com/about/careers

Arachnys builds systems to allow the biggest banks in the world to onboard and monitor their customers. It's the biggest risk area for financial institutions outside of credit, and nobody has cracked it yet.

We recently raised and are growing fast on the back of big enterprise contracts. Our stack is mostly Python3 with MyPy and React on the frontend using GraphQL. ES, Hadoop and various goodies on the backend.

I'm a founder and am still fairly involved technically so if you have any questions, drop me a line - david@arachnys.com

dbuxton··on Repair is as important as innovation
I think you misunderstand the parent, which is precisely arguing that the "boring" things about the US military are actually the things that give it strategic superiority - not innovation. In fact your point is totally consistent with the parent - others may have innovated well, but that's no guarantee of success.

Arachnys builds systems to allow the biggest banks in the world to onboard and monitor their customers. It's the biggest risk area for financial institutions outside of credit, and nobody has cracked it yet.

We are cranking up our engineering and product teams to win the market. Our stack is mostly Python3 with MyPy and React on the frontend using GraphQL. ES, Hadoop and various goodies on the backend.

As well as engineers, if you're a tech leader who has grown a team from 20 to 50+, we should talk.

dbuxton··on Ask HN: Which startup offer would you take?
$220/paycheck which in the US is typically twice a month, so $440/month.

My experience as a Brit working in the US is also that health insurance with higher employee contribution is often also (bizarrely) more expensive and worse quality in other ways, so there are additional non-financial (or not just financial) factors to consider. But the OP hasn't given enough detail to evaluate.

dbuxton··on Ask HN: Pros and cons of working at a startup in 2018?
US healthcare is clearly a huge barrier to older employees joining startups.

At my company we have a great selection of healthcare that's fairly affordable both for employees and the company. I think it's as good or better than any packages I've seen from big brand-name enterprises. However, as a European founder, I was shocked by the complexity and effort that went into the comparison shopping necessary to get anything other than expensive, poor coverage. The quality of what's out there from JustWorks, Gusto, Zenefits et al was frankly shocking - and they are feted as "making it all easy and affordable". (We use Trinet which although in many ways antediluvian has very, very good health options at least for NY).

dbuxton··on The Language of the Roman Empire
Interestingly there's a pretty good argument that Cyril and Methodius didn't create Cyrillic at all but instead were the creators of Glagolitic, a now-more-or-less-extinct script that was developed in what's now (roughly) the Czech Republic and was used in Croatia until the 20th Century: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glagolitic_script

Exactly how Cyril got credit for the script he didn't invent is unclear.

dbuxton··on The Language of the Roman Empire
I've never heard Ѧ called Yys, normally Yus - is that a typo or just terminology from a non-Russian Slavonic language? (genuine question, not trying to be a pedant)
dbuxton··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2017)
Arachnys | senior and junior engineers | London (UK) | Onsite

We use 120TB+ of data and industry-leading domain expertise to help prevent financial crime for global institutions. At the moment we're looking for engineers of any experience level.

What’s different about us?

- No rockstar coders or brilliant jerks — just great people solving hard problems for real customers.

- Anyone can get involved with any part of our system — front-end developers can write Hadoop jobs

- We have a committed focus on delivering quality, while not being scared of pushing back on customer demands.

Whats great about our culture?

- We work hard but it’s never “crunch time” for us. No sleeping under desks or 14-hour days.

- Amazing communication between roles in the company. Developers chat to sales/marketing/AMs all the time, asking for feedback and input both ways.

- We use the best technology to solve problems, whether it’s something new or something established

- We’ve got great infrastructure for working from home (easy to drop-in hangouts, a lot of communication over chat and GitHub)

- Great collaborative environment. Everyone wants to improve and get better at coding.

- Beautiful office overlooking Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast.

We work with Python, JS, React, Docker, Golang, Hadoop, ElasticSearch, Terraform, Ansible, Neo4j and Dgraph. Experience in any of these is a plus but not required.

Drop me a line (email in profile) if any questions.

Email jobs@arachnys.com to apply, linking to your GitHub or some other code that you think tells a good story about you.
