dbeley··on Pro1 X: A Linux smartphone with slideout keyboard
It doesn't give you as much control as a Pinephone or a Purism smartphone, as it relies on a ton of proprietary blob that will never reach Linux mainline.
dbeley··on They Just Moved to Austin. Now They Want to End One of Its Traditions
> A car club member spins his back tires—a practice known as a “burnout”—at a car club meet-up on Sunday, unleashing a cloud of white smoke

Is that really something worth calling a tradition? If it were to happen where I live, I would definitely call the police.

dbeley··on Improving large monorepo performance on GitHub
Just clone any large open source software you know, most of them are several gigs. I don't know if it's necessary, but that's just the way it is: large monorepos are everywhere.
dbeley··on Webmention.io
I'm too young to know what are webmentions or pingbacks (love the band Pinback though), you should briefly mention what they are on your homepage.
dbeley··on The Framework Laptop
For a laptop mainly targeting power users, I think it lacks several features for it to be a game changer:

- trackpoint - real mouse buttons - exotic keyboard layouts (i.e ortholinear)

dbeley··on IPFS Support in Brave
Customers caring about IPFS support are also the ones caring about browser engine monoculture.
dbeley··on Games on GitHub – A list of popular/awesome video games hosted on GitHub
Project is seemingly dead with the latest commit being from 2018.

Two major games with code on github I can think of are Amnesia: The Dark Descent (1) and Celeste (2)

(1) https://github.com/FrictionalGames/AmnesiaTheDarkDescent (2) https://github.com/NoelFB/Celeste

dbeley··on Laptop stolen from Pelosi's office during storming of U.S. Capitol, says aide
So just a couple hundreds of people can protest in front of the building, enter elected official offices and steal laptops most likely containing very sensitive data (hopefully encrypted though)?

I agree with you but I think there ought to be a little more protection of that.

dbeley··on YouTube-dl's repository has been restored
Excellent news, now the community has a central place to contribute. All in all I think it even had a positive impact for youtube-dl, the community will learn from it, and the number of people knowing about youtube-dl has grown by quite a lot.
dbeley··on YouTubers are upscaling the past to 4K, but historians want them to stop
Is it only me that finds the article quite poorly written? There is no lead throughout the different section, the exact same ideas are repeated over and over, etc.

I think che content could have been reduced to something like 50% of its original length.

dbeley··on Is the web getting slower?
> For those of you who use ublock origin but not matrix, matrix will really open your eyes to this proliferation.

You can enable advanced mode in uBlock Origin to have an UI similar to uMatrix.

dbeley··on Turning the Raspberry Pi 4 into a Mini Server
For a home server, ARM is very nice as it has a better power to watt ratio than x86. So less heat to dissipate in your bedroom/home office.
dbeley··on Turning the Raspberry Pi 4 into a Mini Server
Like said by other, price is much higher.

It also uses much more power, most of ivy/sandy bridge low power desktop generally idles at more or less 15W, where the RPI 4 uses less than 4 watts.

dbeley··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
Try Firefox Preview
dbeley··on Ask HN: Dear open source devs how do you sustain yourself
> And the rewards are not big.

At least in France you and VideoLAN are generally one of the first replies when someone ask about libre software and opensource in general. But yeah exposure don't pay the bills, unfortunately.

dbeley··on Paris Mayor: It's Time for a '15-Minute City'
Most of commuters from other counties use public transportation, not cars.
dbeley··on I Learned French in 12 Months
If you're interested in french podcast I can highly recommand the French public radio network Radio France. I'm pretty sure they're available anywhere in the world and they produce tons of contents (music, news, science, cultural podcasts) and all of it is available on replay for free.

France Inter is the main radio station, France Culture the "intellectual" one and France Info the live news radio.

Also the best music in the world is on FIP.

dbeley··on You Suck at Excel (2015) [video]
What's the quickest way to query a simple CSV file with SQL ? Interested in any gui or cli tools.
dbeley··on Why does the Librem 5 phone cost that much?
> But it's really exciting to be able to `ls` and `cd` and `ssh` on a phone, and know that the software updates are coming.

It's strange that SailfishOS has not caught more marketshare on the hacker/tech enthusiast community, because it's (almost) everything people wants about Purism : you lose a bit in the free software and open hardware side, but you win in terms of price (used phone + 50$ license), availability and usability (Right now, it's the only alternative to Android and iOS I can safely recommend).

If only Jolla devs had kept their promises of open-sourcing more of their code.

dbeley··on PIA: Our Merger with Kape Technologies – Addressing Your Concerns
Isn't $13/mo quite expensive compared to the cheapest VPS on any cloud providers ?

The bandwidth on Azure might be better, but the first tier on OVH, DigitalOcean and Scaleway begins at 3$/mo and you still have 100mbps.

dbeley··on The world’s climate goals are not sufficient. They are also unlikely to be met
No way. Renewable energy still need a lot of maintenance/resources which are still heavily carbonated. Same for electric cars.

Changing the way we move is good, but there is still the model of consumption that needs to be changed : eating bananas that crossed oceans by boat, plane traffic and so on.

Yeah bikes are good, but we still need to consume less. Much less.

What you call 80% carbon neutrality is from a perspective of someone living in an desindustrialized country. But you still expect to have smartphones or computers produced at the other end of the world.

dbeley··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
- Nextcloud

- Ampache

- Shaarli

- Dokuwiki

- Deluge

- Hugo blog

Everything running on a cheap server from kimsufi.

dbeley··on The Greening of Paris Makes Its Mayor More Than a Few Enemies
There only seems to be 4 of them as of now, so "every major cross-roads" become just "an experiment with 4".

That's also the only example you took to prove your point of politic's "incompetence in implementing nice sounding ideas."

dbeley··on The Greening of Paris Makes Its Mayor More Than a Few Enemies
> Paris has now public piss boxes on every major cross-roads to avoid people pissing in small streets

Do you have any example on this ? I often go to Paris on a lot of different places and I've never seen anything like this. There are public toilets but I think they are pretty similary to what you can find in every big cities in the world and definitely not open.
