dbcooper··on Venture Capitalists Are Using Podcasts to Lure in Founders
Can confirm, Cum Town lured me into a meeting and I signed away way too much of the company to an angel.
dbcooper··on Hacking the genome of fungi for smart foods of the future
The critical limit with fungi, and other single cell protein foods, is the high amount of nucleic acid, which are converted into purines and then uric acid. The products have to undergo additional processing to reduce these levels before they can be consumed.
dbcooper··on A Return to Blu-ray as Streaming Value Evaporates
I have a nice Sony OLED TV, I have calibrated it with a hardware colorimeter, and I use MadVR ML upscaling to 4K for all my files. I have a ripped a lot of blu-ray discs (especially Dario Argento). Is there a quality issue, rather than censorship, to go beyond that?

Sadly, I suspect that pirate torrent sites will preserve a lot of this stuff better than the streaming owners of the IP. We are in kind of a golden age for quality transfers of niche films. Even if there are still significant gaps.

dbcooper··on Nvidia founder tells Stanford students their high expectations is a hindrance
Why not just have everyone speak in pidgin then ...
dbcooper··on How China Built BYD
BYD's cars gave crappy suspension. Compared to a BMW on the highway...
dbcooper··on AI and Mass Spying
Of course they won't. Classic techno-libertarian fantasy.
dbcooper··on Wayland Isn't Going to Save the Linux Desktop (2022)
I spend the vast majority of my computer time reading text. System 76's Cosmic DE will finally have good subpixel font rendering. That is one thing that will convert me from Windows.
dbcooper··on Oracle of Zotero: LLM QA of Your Research Library
Thanks for sharing various projects. Any tools for materials science that can create summary tables of things like material, application, performance would be really valuable.
dbcooper··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Not to mention this statement ... imagine such a person on your startup board!

During the call, Jason Kwon, OpenAI’s chief strategy officer, said the board was endangering the future of the company by pushing out Mr. Altman. This, he said, violated the members’ responsibilities.

Ms. Toner disagreed. The board’s mission is to ensure that the company creates artificial intelligence that “benefits all of humanity,” and if the company was destroyed, she said, that could be consistent with its mission. In the board’s view, OpenAI would be stronger without Mr. Altman.

dbcooper··on Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman
Not exactly the same, but Onpattro, an siRNA medication encapsulated in a similar formulation of lipid nanoparticles, for the treatment of ATTR was approved in 2018.
dbcooper··on Ask HN: What's the Situation with YouTube-Dl?
yt-dlp is its successor, but I'm having a lot of trouble with it too.

I've been having more success with JDownloader2.

dbcooper··on Ask HN: Any interesting books you have read lately?
I'm a professor of chemical engineering, and I read it because I wanted to see if it was a good introduction for my less biochemistry trained colleagues (I do some work on digestion physiology).

It has some good advice on diet and macronutrients, especially on the less efficient metabolism of protein, that could make a significant difference in one's approach to weight loss dieting, but it is not a guide to dieting practice.

dbcooper··on Ask HN: Any interesting books you have read lately?
Why Calories Don't Count: How We Got the Science of Weight Loss Wrong by Giles Yeo

It's a good, and gentle, introduction to the biochemistry and thermodynamics of digestion, and the history of calorie estimates.

https://www.amazon.com/Why-Calories-Dont-Count-Science/dp/16...

Adam Ragusea interviewed him on his YouTube channel.

Anyone tried Kagi's WebKit based browser?

dbcooper··on The true cost of science’s language barrier for non-native English speakers
Manuscripts from non-native speakers place a considerable burden upon unpaid peer reviewers. Going through 10,000 barely comprehensible words is not fun.

dbcooper··on Numbers without which it's impossible to talk about weight loss
Protein gluconeogenesis is difficult and relatively minor in quantity.

dbcooper··on Dril is everyone. More specifically, he’s a guy named Paul
It was a group account, and then one guy locked everybody else out, and started going heavy on merch and cringe.
dbcooper··on SF's Anchor Brewing Company shutting down after 127 years
It's an excellent beer of its type, and IMO of any beer type. It may be subtle, but not everything has to be an big hoppy IPA, or a sweet NEIPA etc.

Do you also think that Pilsner Urquell, Jever, or Budvar are mediocre?

dbcooper··on Plastics are poisoning us
That's just an ester bond. That's extremely common in biochemicals, including food.

PLA is just going to break down into lactic acid. Big deal.

dbcooper··on John Goodenough has died
The biggest F.

So much positive impact on the world.

dbcooper··on Ted Kaczynski has died
Great to see that most of this site is celebrating a mass murderer.

He would have killed any of you by choice.

dbcooper··on A mental health crisis in science
This song sums up how awful most lab careers are better than any articles that I am aware of:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_bB3LBYG6E&list=RDQ_bB3LBYG...

"You halted the march of progress."

dbcooper··on A mental health crisis in science
Exactly. It's far better to get rejected early from the PhD track, for not being a high achiever, than to muddle through unable to secure a job. You would still be able to prove yourself in a masters degree.
dbcooper··on A mental health crisis in science
A part of this is that in academia there are often few positive career rewards. You're under pressure to publish frequently, in high impact factor journals, and that is to keep your job. You don't get pay rises or bonuses, or any other career improvements, and job security can be until your next contract, at best. If you don't make it to tenured professor, and have good grant funding, then you are staring down the barrel of starting a new career at an older age and with few contacts.

The place to start is by having far fewer PhD students, but more masters students and technicians. A 60% reduction in PhD student numbers would reflect job opportunities, and student aptitude, more accurately.

dbcooper··on Chemotherapy drug reaches brain tumors using novel ultrasound technology
Why not just ask when will immortality be achieved?
dbcooper··on Evidence that the Neanderthals were the first seafarers?
Okay, this really doesn't look like a sober scientific publication.

Source: Another scam blog. LOL.

dbcooper··on Human urine sensing and deep learning-assisted cancer screening
The submission title has taken the liberty of heavily editorializing.

This is a submission to a minor journal, of a complicated material, attempting to do something that is clinically very difficult.

I'm not trying to dismiss this research, but please don't expect this to ever be clinically available.

dbcooper··on The Future of Thunderbird
Thread Hijack:

Is there a capable alternative to Microsoft's Outlook client, that has good translation of emails built in? This is for Windows.

Outlook is so slow, and it opens a small side pane for translation. It has a horrible UI.

dbcooper··on The War for Iron
This is also a problem with iron salt supplements.

As someone with Crohn's disease, I am interested in developing superior alternatives.
