dbarlett··on AWS C4 Instances
From https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/now-available-new-c4-instan... :

In some cases, your workload might not need all 18 of the cores (each of which
runs two hyperthreads, for a total of 36 vCPUs on c4.8xlarge). To tune your
application for better performance, you can manage the power consumption on a
per-core basis. This is known as C-state management, and gives you control over
the sleep level that a core may enter when idle. Let’s say that your code needs
just two cores. Your operating system can set the other 16 cores to a state that
draws little or no power, thereby creating some thermal headroom that will give
the remaining cores an opportunity to Turbo Boost. You also have control over
the desired performance (CPU clock frequency); this is known as P-state
management. You should consider changing C-state settings to decrease CPU
latency variability (cores in a sleep state consume less power, but deeper sleep
states require longer to become active when needed) and consider changing
P-state settings to adjust the variability in CPU frequency in order to best
meet the needs of your application.

NASA published a comprehensive (if a bit dry at times) ebook, X-15: Extending the Frontiers of Flight [1] that covers the development and test program. If you're ever near Dayton, Ohio, the National Museum of the USAF has X-15A-2 [2] and an XLR99 [3] on display.

Werner Vogels on the excess capacity myth:

The excess capacity story is a myth. It was never a matter
of selling excess capacity, actually within 2 months after
launch AWS would have already burned through the excess
Amazon.com capacity. Amazon Web Services was always
considered a business by itself, with the expectation that
it could even grow as big as the Amazon.com retail operation.

Some napkin math - as of late 2013, GitHub's main Elasticsearch cluster had ~128 shards of ~120 GB [1]. Obviously they have more data now, and it's not clear whether the number of shards includes replicas, but at current EC2 on-demand prices[2]:

   RAM: 63 r3.8xlarge @ $2.80/hr = $176.40/hr
   SSD: 5 i2.4xlarge @ $3.41/hr = $ 17.05/hr
   HDD: 1 hs1.8xlarge @ $4.60/hr = $ 4.60/hr

Yes, famously. Bill Gates sent his "Internet Tidal Wave" memo in 1995 and admitted they were behind:

Some competitors have a much deeper involvement in the Internet than
Microsoft. All UNIX vendors are benefiting from the Internet since the
default server is still a UNIX box and not Windows NT, particularly for
high end demands, SUN has exploited this quite effectively.
  [...]
Browsing the Web, you find almost no Microsoft file formats. After 10
hours of browsing, I had not seen a single Word .DOC, AVI file, Windows
.EXE (other than content viewers), or other Microsoft file format.
  [...]
A new competitor “born” on the Internet is Netscape. Their browser is
dominant, with 70% usage share, allowing them to determine which network
extensions will catch on. They are pursuing a multi-platform strategy where
they move the key API into the client to commoditize the underlying operating
  system.

Towards the end of the program, a "jumper cable" was carried to get around that:

The cable would connect an avionics bay in Discovery's middeck with the
controls one level up on its flight deck, effectively allowing flight
controllers in Houston to perform landing activities currently done by
  shuttle astronauts.

Those manual activities include starting the shuttle's auxiliary power units,
deploying an air data probe, unstowing the orbiter's landing gear and
releasing its drag chute after landing, Herring said.
