dbalan··on IBM ported Go to s390x mainframes
IBM used to run the mainframe challenge, in which they let you play with one. It was more a PR exercise than a competition - http://www-05.ibm.com/employment/uk/graduate-programmes/main...
dbalan··on Yubico with new 4096-bit keys and gpg-agent for ssh authentication
Buy the one with smaller form factor. the device bends with very nominal pressure and if you are someone as me who works mostly on one device and need to move around a lot with it - unplugging and replugging the key is very cumbersome. You can leave the nano one in port and forget it until you need it in another device. My two cents from using a neo to store production ssh keys.
dbalan··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2015?
I finished "Thinking Fast and Slow" by Kahneman - A slow read, but a good one. He talks about the intricacies and surprising observations about how me take decisions.

"Logicomix" - A brief "history" of logic, its not always historically accurate. Did I tell you its a graphic novel?

"Show Your work" - Aston Kleon - A short motivating read about sharing ones work, he makes some good arguments for sharing the process as well, not just the product.

Picked up "Coders at work" - read two chapters, a great read so far (I know its pretty popular one amoung HN)

dbalan··on Super small Docker image based on Alpine Linux
But there are cases in which you'll have to decide not to use alpine. If your application and library needs glibc support, you are pretty much your own - and you have to patch the build scripts to use the busybox tools rather than the gnu ones [eg, sed and other tools].
dbalan··on Super small Docker image based on Alpine Linux
I'd like to point out that a docker container, usually doesn't run an init system. [I get that OP was talking about standalone alpine]
dbalan··on Problems with Systemd and Why I Like BSD Init
>> Many of the problems they described with init systems are already solved by both OpenRC and BSD init

which problems is he talking about?

dbalan··on Software developed or maintained by the OpenBSD project
Migrated my personal thinkpad to OpenBSD, other than firefox coughing up now and then - its been smooth so far.

Installing was a breeze, the man pages are well written, never had to run to google much except while partioning.

Also: Never knew sudo was a openBSD project.

dbalan··on I installed CoreOS on a 9-year-old MacBook
Very useful idea. One thing I want to add is docker daemon and client communicate over tcp. So in any computer, you can just export DOCKER_HOST and use it to manage containers and get a more native feel.
dbalan··on Kazakhstan to MitM all HTTPS traffic starting Jan 1
Slightly OT - if the bad guy can't fiddle with the trust store of your computer, whats his another methods of analysing a users traffic? Is https breakable by other means?
dbalan··on Someone left my Gmail in debug mode
If you are building debug interfaces in the app instance, makes sense to design the wording as the end customer would see it.

We'll make mistakes, its better to be proactive. (another eg: vine shipping iOS apps with debug enabled)

dbalan··on Sensu – What I've Learnt
Sensu is really designed for architectures that add and remove nodes in a jiffy.

One nit pick I've is that, rabbitmq is really hard to debug. I've mulitple cases of keepalives (sensu's version of are you up check) because of timeouts.

dbalan··on Dockercraft: Manage Docker containers from Minecraft
This maybe a really good training tool for docker containers.
dbalan··on How to Fold a Julia Fractal
[Slightly OT] Crashes my firefox everytime (FF 40 on OSX).
dbalan··on Introducing Pebble Time
I hope they reduce the price of orginal pebble. ;-)
dbalan··on Fuck It, I'm Going Back to Firefox
As someone who made the switch a month ago, here's the problems I've felt - but they are not major I warn you. I still use it.

1. Firefox's private window still runs your plugins - its not a sandbox clean browser 2. You still have to restart if you installed a plugin (ugh! its 2015) 3. You can search from the address bar, prepend a "?". i.e "?google.com" will search with keyword "google.com".

Otherthan this it was a joy to use firefox - works faster than my "chromium" build on osx yosamite.

dbalan··on M64.pl – how I learned that the default settings are not production settings
Using a tool like fail2ban is also favourable. Most of the bots will give up and look for other targets even if you ban them for a hour.
dbalan··on Good News You Might Have Missed in 2013
Health activists in India, observers the states push for pentavalent vaccines with suspicion. They are more expensive and does not really provide the cost-to-benefit.Also, experts are divided on the fact that there are 18 deaths reported on which state has confirmed 3 being caused by the vaccine.

EDIT: Context - gates pushes pentavalent vaccine being the exciting thing for next year. [1] http://www.downtoearth.org.in/content/centre-confirms-three-... [2] http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Thiruvananthapuram/penta... [3] http://www.downtoearth.org.in/content/policy-draft-backs-new...

dbalan··on Emacs users are like Terry Pratchett’s Igors
one thing I struggle with emacs is that I can't find a place which documents the emacs way of doing things. Emacs has multitude of features, there are just too many to master, yet even to know that they exist.

One example would be rectangle select http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Rec..., I absolutely love them - but till one of colleague introduced them to me, I had no idea they existed.

dbalan··on GitLab 6.0 Released
Ironic is gitlab using github for development, reminds early days of GNU running their infrastructure on UNIX.
