dazc··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
Checks Cloudflare Status - yeah, everything's hunky dory bro.
dazc··on Zürich voters ban noisy leaf blowers
And how much is to make it look like work, blowing that single leaf up and down the driveway is fooling no one.
dazc··on Why are hyperlinks blue? (2021)
Quite amusing once you know the real answer.
dazc··on Will No One Rid Me of These 3 Hour Podcasts?
I didn't have time to write you a short letter, so I wrote you a long one.
dazc··on Will No One Rid Me of These 3 Hour Podcasts?
The antithesis of this is regular 30 second sound bites throughout the day depending on whatever agenda the media is spinning at the time.

In the UK, almost every radio station runs these regular news bulletins and they are all indistinguishable from one show to another. Politician/celeb/business person says, blah, blah, blah until it's permanently embedded in your skull and becomes yet another fact that can not be challenged.

dazc··on UK Petition: Do not introduce Digital ID cards
Some may say this strengthens individual privacy and the inconvenience is a price worth paying.
dazc··on UK Petition: Do not introduce Digital ID cards
In the UK, your bank will have a copy of your id to prove they carried out basic id checks - it currently ends there.
dazc··on UK Petition: Do not introduce Digital ID cards
The root of the issue is a mistrust of a Govt that has suddenly decided to rush through something, that was never discussed prior to the election, on the grounds that it will tackle illegal immigration, which it clearly will not.
dazc··on UK Petition: Do not introduce Digital ID cards
Well, 2 million plus have signed the petition and 90% of those people will go along with the scheme when it is introduced - because it will be convenient to do so.

Tell me how you plan to survive living off-grid whilst standing firm against it.

dazc··on UK Petition: Do not introduce Digital ID cards
The likelihood that it will become tied to your bank account, credit file, etc in a way which isn't currently possible with physical forms of id such as passports and driving licences.
dazc··on If Placebos Work So Well, Why Not Prescribe Sugar Pills for Everything?
In place of Metformin for diabetes, it could be counter-productive?
dazc··on UK Petition: Do not introduce Digital ID cards
"This appears to be about (2), with the catch of it being made mandatory for anyone who wants to be employed in the UK."

For people who are already working illegally, or plan to, it would change nothing, as they could dodge any checks by sub-contracting through someone who seems to be legally employed.

The government cannot be so daft as to ignore how much illegal work happens this way, so there has to be some larger scheme at play here.

dazc··on President Trump Signs Technology Prosperity Deal with United Kingdom
Renewables in the UK are intermittent, all at once at not at all. We also have a crazy scenario where we have so much wind power at times that it has to be turned off because the grid can't handle the load and battery storage is scarce - we then compensate the owners of the turbines for the income they lose as a consequence.

Gas is very expensive here, we don't buy any from Putin, we import it from the US where it is liquefied, shipped thousands of miles and then un-liquefied for end use.

Our businesses are dying trying to compete with countries that pay multiples less for energy than we do.

More nuclear would give us long-term, uninterrupted supply - especially since small modular reactors can be located where the power is needed without needing the national infrastructure to be upgraded.

dazc··on Britain jumps into bed with Palantir in £1.5B defense pact
I can remember the public information ads that advised families to hide under the stairs or under a table until the nuclear attack has ended.
dazc··on Are touchscreens in cars dangerous?
Well, yes, there is the obvious stuff although I could say opening windows is not entirely simple unless I'm fully opening or closing.

Old-school radios were a lot more user-friendly with preset station buttons and a tactile volume control that actually felt like it was connected to something.

dazc··on Are touchscreens in cars dangerous?
Physical volume adjustment buttons on the steering wheel are about the only control I feel comfortable using whilst the car is moving. Anything more complex with a touch-screen interface is an accident waiting to happen.
dazc··on Britain jumps into bed with Palantir in £1.5B defense pact
Is there a UK-based company offering a comparable service?
dazc··on How Britain built some of the world’s safest roads
You don't have to do 60mph, this is true, but there are lots of people that will try to.
dazc··on More and more people are tuning the news out: 'Now I don't have that anxiety
'People are doing/not doing a thing...' says 'The News'.
dazc··on The buyer-pull and seller-push theories of sales
Good marketing is selling stuff that people want to buy.

People or businesses that break this rule and prosper are either being incredibly persistent at playing a numbers game or are doing something sketchy.

dazc··on Ask HN: Any thoughts on my new online business?
Seems like a great idea - I was also pleased to see you are open and transparent about pricing.
dazc··on Building the mouse Logitech won't make
I haven't had one actually break but, for sure, the pressure required to click becomes annoying after a year or so.
dazc··on Nick Clegg: Silicon Valley is full of wealthy men who think they're victims
From a guy who's authentic self changes with the direction of the wind?
dazc··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
I think you'd be surprised how aggressive driving has become normalized throughout the world?
dazc··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
You are on to something here. I have started driving a small car in the UK (Ford Fiesta) and have discovered it's a magnet for the road rage people (around 50% of drivers here).

Firstly, I never back down and will come to a complete stop if slowing down doesn't work. Secondly, I have noticed these drivers feed off any reaction and that avoiding eye contact works very effectively, even if they pull beside you to have a childish rant.

dazc··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
Because that works every time?
dazc··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
It's just pretending to do that, seemingly?
dazc··on How much do electric car batteries degrade?
With 4k I would to go for a Focus or Fiesta, I think you're always risking trouble with a Vauxhall? The Focus of around 12-14 years ago, particularly, was seriously over engineered which is why you still see so many of them around.

I had one for 4 years, approaching 200k miles, it came to grief at the hands of a 95 year old lady driver. Her car was wrecked, the Focus stood up well but, alas, even the minor repairs required were deemed uneconomical.

No help to you, admittedly, but if it assists anyone else avoid a similar issue...

dazc··on The Folk Economics of Housing
It wasn't a surge in demand either..
dazc··on The Folk Economics of Housing
I remember when house prices doubled in the space of 3 years and it wasn't a supply shortage that caused this.
