dazbradbury··on Y Combinator invests in Monzo through its Continuity Fund
Oh wow - I thought the current account numbers were driven far more by switching. Presumably it impacts the % where salary is being paid in? But at those numbers maybe it's irrelevant!

Great job again, and as I say, can't wait for the fully fleshed out marketplace.

dazbradbury··on Y Combinator invests in Monzo through its Continuity Fund
Big congrats to Monzo, and I can't wait to see what their marketplace looks like when it's finally fleshed out.

What's the state of account switching in the US? I'd have thought a big part of Monzo's strength in the UK is the mandated account switching service:

https://www.currentaccountswitch.co.uk/

Is there an equivalent system in the US to reduce the friction of switching banks?

OpenRent | London, UK | Full-Time | ONSITE | https://www.openrent.co.uk

OpenRent is the way people rent property online - a force for good in an industry tarnished by rip-off agencies. Enabled by an unrelenting focus on technology, we now let more properties than any agency in the UK. In the last 12m we let over £11.5bn worth of property, to over 1.5 million registered users, without charging any admin fees.

We're VC backed, profitable, and with plenty of ambition. We're looking for generalists, thought-leaders, and those with a passion for solving real-world problems.

You'll be working in a close-knit team, directly with the founders. You'll have full autonomy to work on, and figure out how best to solve, the biggest problems in the industry. We find problems and improve customer experiences via code every day.

dazbradbury··on EU says new cars must include built-in speed limiters
Ah nice! Thanks for enlightening me. That should be the headline (and in the article at the very least)!
dazbradbury··on EU says new cars must include built-in speed limiters
Why not enforced collision detection? Presumably that will prevent more accidents than alerting for speed will.

Most manufacturers seem to have these systems already (even if they're reserved as optional extras / high end models) - and it seems crazy that this wouldn't be the first safety measure to apply.

Edit: Seems this story has been moderated: http://hnrankings.info/19498747/ @dang - any idea why? Seems a few stories about EU regs, but this is focusing on motoring.

dazbradbury··on “Every minute I spent thinking about competitors was a minute wasted”
Very happy to hear it!
dazbradbury··on “Every minute I spent thinking about competitors was a minute wasted”
Funny - I have an email from pg from 2011 where YC didn't fund OpenRent [1] due to our competitors being too dominant.

As head strong (and certainly naiive) young founders at the time, we continued with our vision anyway. Thankfully we have gone on to become by far the largest rental agency in the uk, and have driven real change (see tenant fees ban) in the industry.

I mention this as when it comes to investment decisions, competitors / incumbents of course do matter. But as per what I think pg means here, when running your own business any time spent thinking about the next startup to raise a bucket load of cash is of course wasted. That has certainly been the case in our industry where this seems to happen on a monthly basis.

dazbradbury··on Tell HN: Google removing Gmail access from IFTTT
Seems to be the same issue for Gmail backup tools, eg:

https://github.com/jay0lee/got-your-back/issues/195

Frustrating, given Google's own takeout tool doesn't work on larger inboxes! This is basically going to destroy the tools that were papering over gmails cracks.

We've actually had commute time search at OpenRent (https://openrent.co.uk) since launch (2012) - It's less prominent on our homepage now, and somewhat unloved, simply because the majority of people seem to ignore / not want it.

The key to winning in the property space is definitely non-obvious, but I love to see innovative search tools popping up from time to time. Long may it continue!

dazbradbury··on Google Maps Platform now integrated with the GCP Console
"Thirteen years ago, the first Google Maps mashup combined Craigslist housing data on top of our map tiles—before there was even an API to access them."

Funny they pick out Craigslist, who as far as I'm aware, use OpenStreetMap because clearly Google maps doesn't work for them (cost presumably).

dazbradbury··on Google Maps Platform
Will be extremely sad to see fun maps projects disappear as a result of this. We're also seeing a huge increase in cost (we are a paying user already) at https://www.openrent.co.uk/, but I kind of hoped commercial projects would be treated differently to non-commercial ones.

dazbradbury··on How the Kodi Box Took Over Piracy
"In the UK, Kodi boxes have garnered more attention from authorities, thanks to stingy soccer fanatics driving an early swell of adoption"

This is very unfair. I don't own a Kodi box, but in the UK it's against the law to show football games on TV on Saturday between 2:45pm and 5:15pm [1]. So it's not "stingy" football fans, it's fans that have no other way to watch a 3pm kick off without actually going to the game itself. No matter how much someone may be willing to spend, a game being sold out / distance from home / time commitments etc. are all non-stingy reasons to not be able to watch a game.

It sounds like Kodi boxes have fulfilled that desire, rather than allowing people to circumvent a paid service as the article implies.
