dazbradbury··on Fake Amazon reviews 'being sold in bulk' online
Looks like this comment worked. Thanks for fixing!
dazbradbury··on Fake Amazon reviews 'being sold in bulk' online
For UK users: I'm surprised the BBC are hijacking the back button here when redirecting from .com -> .co.uk. I thought that behaviour was reserved for more, well, scummy websites.

This appears to be the offending client-side code:

  let {isUkCombined: t} = e;
  const n = new URL(Object(c.a)())
  , {protocol: a, host: r, pathname: o} = n;
  if (Object(m.b)(),
  t && r.includes(".com")) {
    const e = r.replace(".com", ".co.uk");
    window.location.assign("".concat(a,"//").concat(e).concat(o))
 } else if (!t && n.host.includes(".co.uk")) {
    const e = n.host.replace(".co.uk", ".com");
   window.location.assign("".concat(a, "//").concat(e).concat(o))
 }

Anyone work there / know someone that works there and could fix?

Replacing "window.location.assign(...)", with "location.href = ..." should do it.

dazbradbury··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
Worth pointing out that Chrome has been partitioning cache by domain since chrome 86 (released Oct 6th 2020).

https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2020/10/http-cache...

Does anyone know if these protections go further or differ significantly?

dazbradbury··on Firefox not planning on supporting PWA
This title is a bit misleading. Progressive Web Apps are supported on Firefox mobile, on android at least.

The real issue people should be discussing is Apple not supporting PWAs, or in fact, any browser engine other than Safari on iPhones. It's the real blocker to wider adoption of PWAs (and many other features!)

Until that happens, whether Firefox desktop / other platforms support this specific behaviour (Single-Site Browser) is a bit moot as it's an edge case compared to 50% of mobile users.

dazbradbury··on Reveal.js: HTML presentation framework
Good question. Would also be interested in this, as something to accompany [insert video conferencing tool of choice] to make use of dual monitors sensibly.

What's your use case out of interest?

dazbradbury··on An updated daily front page of The New York Times as artwork on your wall
Thanks for the link - but that is quite a lot smaller at 10 inches vs. 32 inches so the price comparison isn't quite like for like.
dazbradbury··on An updated daily front page of The New York Times as artwork on your wall
I didn't expect the e-ink display to cost 2.3k Euro's, but I love the concept and it looks great.

If the price could come down I think a consumer product that can be pointed at any web page would have lots of amazing use cases - from dynamic picture frame, to news, stats, etc.

dazbradbury··on .NET 5.0
Would love to read about that, even if some parts are now already outdated or no longer as big am obstacle.

A site as large / complex as I assume bing is would possibly allay lots of our concerns and give us some concrete steps to move forward with.

dazbradbury··on .NET 5.0
Thanks!
dazbradbury··on .NET 5.0
"Our migration from 4.7=>2.0 was the most difficult"

Would love to see a write up of your challenges / approach. Seems to be a big lack of write ups on this process that I'm sure lots of devs would appreciate!

dazbradbury··on Bleeding-edge tech will kill your startup
Is this actually someone just testing what % of people read the article before commenting?

It does make me wonder, given the deceptive nature of the title and obviously emotive topic of whether devs should use bleeding-edge tech...

dazbradbury··on A Horrible Experiment
https://twitter.com/SergioSemJ/status/1307493041742254080?s=...

One theory is it's actually the glasses increasing the likelihood of correctly identifying a face (or "feature" element in the photo). Interesting looking through the various tests in the thread, as clearly lots of variables here, but no way this will be exhaustive.

Suspect this might kick off some serious arguments at Twitter HQ for allowing users to pick the cropping vs. an algorithm regardless of any bias found one way or not.

dazbradbury··on Show HN: MailgunLogger
Awesome - we've slowly moved so many of the mailgun events into our own system over the years, that it probably made sense to just start with an "everything' approach to begin with!

I have asked mailgun a number of times if they'd simply charge for longer storage limits, and they said no.

Thanks for setting this up!

dazbradbury··on Private client-side-only PWAs are hard, but now Apple made them impossible
Regarding your point on consumers, we put our PWA/TWA into the app store (for the reason you outlined) - and now get a raft of negative reviews that the TWA is the same as the mobile site... Which is frustrating, because that's the point.

Making it clear why a TWA is in the app store is hard in itself. Trying to explain why it's better for consumers over a native app + mobile site is even harder.

dazbradbury··on Gmail marking email from me as spam
I've had multiple legitimate emails from Google employees and their sales teams all end up in my Gmail spam folder, even from senior members of various divisions.

I still get spam in my inbox.

They definitely know this is a problem and have people working on it - but spam filtering at that scale is much harder than it may appear at first.

dazbradbury··on Issue 914451: Autofill does not respect autocomplete="off"
I'm not sure who Chrome think they're helping. We get many, many users contacting our support team because of this feature / bug on https://www.openrent.co.uk.

It's frustrating, we've used workarounds, which then stop working and reports come flooding in again. It's crazy to me that the Chrome team think this is better for users, and that there isn't a more intelligent workaround for sites abusing autocomplete=off.

Huge congrats to Oege and the team at Semmle - couldn't be happier for a hugely passionate and smart individual (and a previous professor of mine!)

Am sure this will bring some amazing advances to Github and thus a huge % of the developer community.

dazbradbury··on Yahoo Mail’s Plan to Fix Email: Make Computers Read It
Yahoo should probably focus on getting the basics of email deliverability right first. They could have the best client side features by a distance, and I wouldn't go near them and would continue to tell others to avoid using them.

The number of times their servers reject emails at random, causing yahoo email users frustration, is astonishing for an email service provider. Contacting their postmaster to spell out the issue results in a dispute over email headers (which they insist can be obtained from their email client even though the emails are being rejected server side) - and their numerous problems go unsolved. We tell users to switch away from yahoo if they want to receive emails with a reasonable probability.

We've never had issues sending millions of emails to Gmail, outlook, or pretty much any large ESP other than yahoo.

dazbradbury··on Gmail’s API lockdown will kill some third-party app access, starting July 15
Does anyone know if this will have any impact on Gmail backup tools such as:

https://github.com/jay0lee/got-your-back

Or the long term sustainability of such projects?

I've found gmail's own data export tools to not work at all for any inbox of a considerable size (100gb+) - so third party tools are the only way to actually back up / migrate email data.

Without such tooling, relying on Gmail would be a huge mistake for anything remotely important.
