dawatchusay··on Developer receives 2-star review for using "race conditions" in app changelog
Are you trolling? “Race” here means what piece of code completes the fastest. Can we also not say “I’ve mastered the violin”?
dawatchusay··on Spotify starts divesting from France in response to new music-streaming tax
From my perspective they made streaming a vast catalogue of music legally a business. I’ve been a user for a long time and been able to discover a lot on their platform although I must admit quality of recommendations seems to be falling lately. Last.fm was great at that
dawatchusay··on Operation Snow White
> this probably isn't one of the most major attempts

Perhaps one of the most major failed attempts. Also do we have to think about what groups might be most able to go undetected while infiltrating the IRS?

dawatchusay··on Wayfair CEO Niraj Shah tells employees to 'work longer hours' in year-end email
Sure, I’m already doing what I love (programming) but yes I would like to be better and better at that while also providing as nice a life as possible for my family. My point is there is no level of UBI that would be considered fair in a for-profit world. Rhetorically should people in Wyoming get the same UBI as people in California? Or do all the people that don’t want to work move to the less expensive areas and those that do live in the nice ones? This doesn’t create equality, fairness, or satisfaction for the recipients of UBI
dawatchusay··on Wayfair CEO Niraj Shah tells employees to 'work longer hours' in year-end email
So the people that made and operate the machines work, and the machines work, but no one else
dawatchusay··on Wayfair CEO Niraj Shah tells employees to 'work longer hours' in year-end email
I don’t want basic income. I want the ability to differentiate myself and earn more than others. And I don’t think the government would ever “have no choice” but to implement basic income and I do not think it would be preferable to most. People would become dissatisfied. Money made by all is in my opinion money made by nobody
dawatchusay··on Antidepressants or Tolkien
So you were 100% correct on the test?
dawatchusay··on Hipólito Mora, vigilante crusader against Mexico’s cartels, killed in ambush
It’s certainly not the users’ faults for starters, and “artificial stimulation” should include alcohol and cigarettes which don’t result in situations of the magnitude we see regarding the illegal drug trade, perhaps exactly because they are legal and regulated.
dawatchusay··on AI Will Make Our Society Even More Unequal, Economists Warn
I think Google is a net positive
dawatchusay··on AI Will Make Our Society Even More Unequal, Economists Warn
Yeah you couldn’t do you job without Google because it’s vastly superior to a shelf of 5 books
dawatchusay··on AI Will Make Our Society Even More Unequal, Economists Warn
Are you saying that using Google to answer a question is more exhausting than parsing a book? That makes zero sense
dawatchusay··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
This made my heart sink
dawatchusay··on The overfitted brain: Dreams evolved to assist generalization (2021)
So this is interesting. It’s not like this pseudo-randomization of inputs is necessarily a good thing because you’re actually introducing non-reality into the brain (like dreaming I’m in prison or can fly) but instead we’re being prepared for possibilities so that I can wake up and think, “what if that actually had happened?” Still, not sure if this is a productive thing at this stage in human existence or not, i.e. do I need to train for if I could fly or should I focus on reality?
dawatchusay··on Bovine meat and milk protein in tumor‐free mucosa of colorectal cancer patients
This is the WORST summary title of a post I’ve ever seen. The wording implies actually the opposite of the article; it implies to those without deep knowledge of the topic that bovine and milk proteins are associated with remission. The full title of the research states that those things interfere with patient survival. Instead, reading only the title first, I think “oh, tumor-free! Great!”
dawatchusay··on Dow said it was recycling our shoes. We found them at an Indonesian flea market
Innocent until proven guilty
dawatchusay··on “Pigeon Neck” Illusion (2014)
I’m just saying upon initial thought that it seemed too simple to be considered an “illusion” because it doesn’t rely on some mental trickery, just blindness. But I’m willing to accept that optical illusions may all rely on some form of blindness. Glad to spawn the conversation!
dawatchusay··on “Pigeon Neck” Illusion (2014)
I don’t feel this is much of an illusion. I think you just can’t see the movement of gray on black. Or maybe this is what illusions are in a very simple form?
dawatchusay··on Social media may prevent users from reaping creative rewards of profound boredom
Yeah, wow
dawatchusay··on Tesla has suspended vehicle purchases using Bitcoin
Could Tesla not have just decided that any new purchases would be converted to the dollar immediately? Accepting Bitcoin doesn’t necessarily mean holding Bitcoin and holding is where valuation matters. If I’m right about that it sounds like this could have a somewhat environmentally conscious motive.
