davydm··on Dell confirms its SupportAssist software causes Windows BSOD crashes
wow, slow clap literally 7 years after I told them so when I had a Dell laptop.
davydm··on Ask HN: How often do you investigate issues in production vs. looking at logs?
1. the logs hopefully tell you where to look 2. the logs hopefully give you enough context to construct a physical test (ie, replicate) 3. the physical test hopefully gives enough context to write an automated test 4. we write the automated test, submit to staging, do the physical test again 5. PROFIT!
davydm··on Banks are funding climate chaos. You don't have to
what a crazy idea

either: 1. you spend all the effort and time (and money - it's not free to drive around, and there are often join fees) to switch banks and it makes no difference whatsoever, or 2. the overall energy consumption remains the same, and everyone levels out, because that's just how much energy banks require per customer

I'm all for saving the earth but I don't see how making my life more difficult will change this situation one iota - meanwhile, I have limited time to live, limited resources of my own.

davydm··on ROI of AI-assisted Software Development report
none of the metrics it decides by are related at all to software - they're all management terms

what a waste of time

davydm··on Ask HN: Does CopyFail make a stronger case for rolling releases such as Arch?
Good distros should backport updates like this - the patch has been merged into several downstreams. Whilst I prefer a rolling release, this isn't the reason to do it. You could even be on a rolling release that is behind (like arch - my Gentoo box was patched for this vuln before I even understood what it was, and I could run the exploit on my arch machine days laterz until eventually the update came). Speed of response by the upstream here is more important than anything else.
davydm··on The value of the U.S. dollar has weakened since Trump took office
the value of the _US_ has weakened significantly in the eyes of the rest of the world due to the great orange muppet - if y'all don't like it, get rid of the useless skinflap.
davydm··on We stopped hiring engineers for coding ability
just wait for the inevitable crash and burn - stupid doesn't survive evolution for _that_ long.
davydm··on The AI Flippening: what is it, and is it here?
spoken like a true non-software-dev. If your ai is making the actual decisions behind your code - you (a) don't know what you're doing anyway and (b) will end up with a ball of mud. The whole point of ai _assistants_ is to fill in gaps - gaps that, eg, I used to fill with stackoverflow. The sheer number of times I have to push back against claude's stupid ideas - coding is 100% _NOT_ solved. Claude is well useful, sure, but rabbit-holes down paths that are obviously wrong to anyone with the experience; is quite happy to speculate on the finest details with very little information (so is often wildly wrong), and works best under the guidance of someone who actually does know what they're doing and can stop a disaster before it happens.

If you're not experiencing this, it's simply a signal of your lack of skill in the area. These tools are useful, but they do not run the show, thank goodness, because we'd need to level up our power game on this planet to deal with their klunky shit code.

davydm··on Scammers use Gmail dot alias trick to spoof Robinhood in phishing scam
yeah, the gmail dots-alias thing is a fucking nightmare

I haven't been scammed like this, but I know to check for stray dots in incoming mail's To field because there's someone who was granted my email (with a period in it) and I keep getting their mails (holiday photos, amazon emails, and just recently, a belgian second-hand item-selling platform). So it doesn't surprise me in the least that someone is taking advantage of this. If google had even an iota of one good programmer left, they'd change this. But apparently not, because this great big hole has been there since the beginning, and will likely stay there until the end.

davydm··on Panama's ocean lifeline vanishes for the first time in 40 year
may just be a one-off, but may also just be because humans are still bickering about global warming instead of fixing their ways.
davydm··on AI and Coder Employment: Compiling the Evidence [pdf] [Federal Reserve]
yeah, now we wait for the rebound, as companies discover that coding is definitely NOT "solved".
davydm··on Google introduces QR code challenge against AI bots
A QR code to defeat bots? what's next? spaghetti to defeat italians? what's stopping ai agents from reading, decoding, and following the QR code? Nothing in the article gives me any confidence whatsoever.
davydm··on French teen who licked vending machine straw faces years in jail in Singapore
Well, kids gotta learn somehow. FAAFO.
davydm··on First G-SHOCK with a heart rate monitor, also featuring Smartphone Link
looks neat, but this would stop my buy:

""" Use USB charging for the heart rate monitor, step tracker and notifications. Time display is powered by solar charging alone when the battery runs low. """

I have a gshock already (GM-B2100D-1A) and I love it - I especially love that it should never be opened, always just works, and it looks ok too (:

davydm··on Ask HN: Like Gcloud but with Prepayment Only?
the best idea I can suggest is to set up a virtual debit/credit card, if your bank permits it - for example, I have one which I keep at a level that's enough to pay for my monthly patreons, etc, but which will not pay when it hits zero. Then I don't have to worry (that much) about, eg, a data breach.
davydm··on Average new UK electric car price is now lower than petrol vehicles
in addition, this doesn't take into account that there are a plethora of expensive, big, petrol/diesel cars for which there is no electric equivalent. There are lies, and then there are statistics.
davydm··on Show HN: Millions of websites crawled for LLMs to rebuild the pricing pages
what is the point of the "no cheating" redirect? I had to stop an infinite loop of that bullshit, but I guess that's inline with LLM slop.
davydm··on HappyHorse AI Video Generator
why would I trust a site with a built-in FOMO generator?

https://imgur.com/a/eJMBxO0 <- this thing just resets when I refresh the page.

A company which is dishonest from the start will continue to be dishonest going forward. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS BULLSHIT.

davydm··on Nigel Farage wants to build a British ICE. Starmer may have handed him the tools
I hate that ICE doesn't just mean internal combustion engine - thought this would be about a "national" british engine, but instead it's just people being assholes.
davydm··on Ask HN: How do you escape golden handcuffs at FAANG?
I didn't move from FAANG, but a very similar equivalent in my home country. I saw people "golden handcuffed" all the time, and the honest truth is that you have to decide what's more important to you - spending cash on vacuous bullshit and being unhappy at work, or not dreading every monday. You can still find places that pay well, and you don't have to sacrifice your life to them. The big thing is learning to live within your means - or, simply, to be able to say "no" to the little kid inside you who wants everything.
davydm··on Scientists found a protein that drives brain aging – and how to stop it
Claude reckons by combatting spare iron in the blood (ftl1 is apparently iron-based), so iron chelators like green tea after every meal.
davydm··on Add klickety clackety sounds to your Mac keyboard
I hate it.

Please do use it in a crowded office or coffee shop. The gene pool needs some chlorine.

davydm··on Ask HN: Is weird it that Anthropic raised my API limit from $500/mo to $200k?
What even is the point of a limit if it's just going to auto-raise? Now you can end up in the situation of owing that. Perhaps you forget that the agent is running in the background somewhere for a while. Or perhaps you end up with a vulnerable dependency that does that for you.

Limits are there to prevent unwanted behaviors, either accidental or malicious.

davydm··on Ask HN: Did anyone else get logged out from HN today?
I did - had to log in again to comment, thought it was a little odd, but eh, I see that the user cookie is only set for a year.
davydm··on AI-Native Community Platform Designed for Fire Island Pines
I don't see the need (or indeed any point) of ai in this app as per the stated functions. Pity a useful app is just a cover for enshittification.
davydm··on YOLO Linux is a corporate nightmare
it's not so much a corporate nightmare as a personal one.

corporations will simply legislate not to use it; people who think this is an easy solve for becoming proficient with linux will use it and fail in myriad ways, including:

- upstream ai is offline / dead / rate limited. You can't use your machine now

- upstream ai hallucinates - you have no more / now

- upstream ai is haxed - you have everything, but it's working for someone else now

perhaps it's just evolution for nerds - the morons who pick this will be cleansed from the pool

davydm··on Decompiled White House's New App
oh boy, the faith levels are apparent from the start:

"I’ve been writing 99% of my code at Airbnb with LLMs. If you think this is a bold claim it means you’re doing it wrong."

no, son, I can just tell you that you're "writing" inconsequential code, and it's likely going to come back to bite you; I use claude regularly, and claude is probably one of the least-shit ones, and I have to push back _a lot_ because it quite often completely and utterly loses the plot. I continue to use it for the cases where it doesn't, so it's a bit of a gamble, but often pays off. Unless, of course, everything is down, or half-down, like it was on Friday, when I just gave up asking Claude for anything after a bit - there was no point.

davydm··on Spanish woman dies by euthanasia after long legal battle with father
I'm glad, for her, that she got what she wanted.

Everyone is all for self-determination until that self-determination counters their own wants / beliefs. I'm only still here because I have responsibilities to fulfill. At least I got what I chose.

davydm··on Denmark desperately needs more inequality
Another turd slides out of the dhh hole.
davydm··on What up world -Systems Cat here with a query
I think a system is _always_ defined by its constraints. Not so much its components. Perhaps its features? But not components. No-one gives a flying fux if you're using postgres or mysql or some other hippie database. That's a component, and no-one cared.

I think emergence comes from complexity, not constraint. Constraint may kill emergence, but constraint on its own means nothing. What's the point of laws in a country with zero inhabitants?
