davinic··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
I would hope that intelligent people know that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
davinic··on E-books at local libraries: a fight between publishers and librarians
I think this has something to do with how to brain stores memories, and that storage is highly entwined with a spatial location. Somehow being able to tie that memory to a location in space makes it more concrete for me. If I remember a fact from a book I can also usually remember the physical location of the fact inside the book.

My point is that it's not a conscious process, so the book/map isn't replaced by a simple location indicator. The experience of a book isn't reducible in this way.

davinic··on CDC says stop vaping as mystery lung condition spreads
Not necessarily. The first two substances have been vaporized extensively in the past as fog juice. Modern fog fluids use (IIRC) a mix of different glycol formulations, but glycerin is no longer used in any commercial products due to health concerns.

[Edit] I'll add that they were studied extensively in regards to actors and performers, and Actors' Equity defines many guidelines around usage and exposure: https://www.actorsequity.org/resources/Producers/safe-and-sa...

The initial NY report mentioned also that they were likely counterfeit products, which I could easily see as being prone to use an unsafe substitution.

Not to mention the last-foot problem of placing the package somewhere safe for the recipient. How would these drones put a package in a locked vestibule or even my covered porch?

First, your argument is an ad hominem attack. Do you have specific issues with the details cited? If so, then make an argument against those.

Second, even if the reporters are unionized, the managers, who are the ones who greenlight stories, especially ones that involve a yearlong investigation, certainly are not.

Third, of course all logistics companies have accidents. Maybe you failed to read the article because it spent plenty of time detailing the differences between UPS and these 3PL companies.

davinic··on Parents Thought They Wanted Tech in Every Classroom, Now They’re Not So Sure
I think at some point it's good to read any book, as you're learning the process of reading.

But later on it definitely matters. I had this same struggle with my daughter when she was in middle school -- she got so many kudos for "reading so much" but the books were all filler. I tried many times to point out that books are just a medium and the content is key.

davinic··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
Because that's the system under which we live.

Healthcare should be provided to all by the government for free, but until then we must live under the system.

davinic··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
The tax "relief" you state is because it's an actual expense. It costs, on average, $0.58 per mile to operate a vehicle. If you're earning the equivalent of a full time wage at Uber, you're driving 30-50k miles per year and incurring that expense on those miles. It's not some magic money that you just get to use as the basis of a deduction.
davinic··on Ask HN: How do you handle logging?
Often you're not scrubbing individual data, you're logging the contents of an entire object. In this case, depending on the language, I will usually use an annotation/decoration on the object itself so the logging platform will know not to log it. I have also seen this method used in environments subject to HIPAA regulations.

davinic··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
yes, but it's on your taxes because it's an actual unreimbursed expense you've undertaken. It factors into your net income, not just a tax savings.
davinic··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
I question "Bizfluent" as a good source. The IRS states $0.58 per mile.

[Edit]: I'll add in another source in line with the IRS rate. See AAA: https://newsroom.aaa.com/tag/driving-cost-per-mile/

davinic··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
$21/hour only includes time when you're on a fare, not time when you're logged in and available.

And it doesn't include the gas, maintenance and depreciation on your personal vehicle driven 30-50k miles per year to reach that amount. The IRS estimates those costs to be $0.58/mile, which would reduce the income by between $17,400 and $29,000.

davinic··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
AND your own gas, maintenance, and depreciation would come out of your $10.50.
davinic··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
The IRS vehicle mileage rate for 2018 is 54.5 cents per mile. If a driver averages 20 miles per hour, then their effective hourly rate is cut in half from depreciation/fuel/maintenance/etc.

Exactly. And 60fps (which is not that high for many games) gives you 16.67ms per frame. at a 50ms delay you're already 3 frames behind.
