Background agent in the decoy identity that periodically browses the web, retrieves email from a banal account etc.?

"Idunno copper, I'm a journalist not a geek"
davidwritesbugs··on Defeating a 40-year-old copy protection dongle
Hope she knows she still only has 3million trial days left
davidwritesbugs··on Doing gigabit Ethernet over my British phone wires
In other words "democracy" - people with an agenda tell their version of its benefits. Saying "the vote was invalid because the poor uneducated people were too stupid to realise they were being lied to"
davidwritesbugs··on Snow Simulation Toy
The snowflakes are all flocking together! Can you have a murmuration of snowflakes?
davidwritesbugs··on Doing gigabit Ethernet over my British phone wires
Bloody poor people deciding for themselves what they want. Shouldn't get a vote unless you have a degree and property. If only they'd had the sense to listen to their betters.
davidwritesbugs··on The cleaner: One woman’s mission to help Britain’s hoarders
That's particularly true of tech books. I want to hang on to my copy of "Tinker Tailor" but "Adobe Air in Action" 2008?
davidwritesbugs··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
Ditto. It is very very slow but I never hit quota limits but people on Discord are complaining like mad it is slow even on the Pro plans. I tend to use glm-*air a lot for planning before using 4.7
davidwritesbugs··on Michelangelo's first painting, created when he was 12 or 13
> This is why the common "There's no such thing as talent, it's just hard work" line can't possibly be true.

please stop killing my delusions.

davidwritesbugs··on Erich von Däniken has died
Read his books as a schoolboy, stopped taking him seriously when in one of his books he reproduced an ancient picture of a skeleton and said “this was /centuries/ before x-rays were discovered. How would they know bone structure without [alien advanced tech]” I kinda laughed and threw away his books. Still, he grifted a good living so props.
davidwritesbugs··on Bob Weir has died
This always makes me laugh. Comically pretentious & naive. Like schoolboy poetry.
davidwritesbugs··on “Erdos problem #728 was solved more or less autonomously by AI”
I recently learnt that Douglas Adams wrote code and the ultimate answer was '*' - 42 in ascii
davidwritesbugs··on Space: 1999 – Special Effects Techniques
There was a homoerotic element in the fishnet stuff I always thought. And HR would have a fit if you asked women to wear that stuff now, err, I mean in 1999.
davidwritesbugs··on Apple is crossing a Steve Jobs red line
Ahhhhh, nzbs
davidwritesbugs··on Apple is crossing a Steve Jobs red line
I did the same: tended to use Apple services then when I hit poverty I was able to use my NAS copies of music and videos after cancelling subscriptions. Had a "so why was I paying for years?" moment especially with all the enshitification issues
davidwritesbugs··on Why I love OCaml (2023)
F# would be awesome but for the dogs*t .Net backend that made the tiniest error insoluble
davidwritesbugs··on 52 Year old data tape could contain Unix history
"illegal fluid" what would that be? And why illegal? And do you submit the recovered data anywhere, for data archaeological purposes? Seems an important thing.
davidwritesbugs··on Royal Navy installs quantum clock in robotic submarine
"Boil it down and this means the quantum clock loses only one second every 30 billion years, which, for navigation purposes, means a drift of a mere 1 x 10⁻⁶ degrees per hour. "

What does this mean in terms of metres off a desired position?

davidwritesbugs··on Pornhub says UK visitors down 77% since age checks came in
This. I still use xnxx but via a VPN now, same for Pornhub users I'd guess
davidwritesbugs··on Police Break Up Lego Theft Ring
Perhap his punishment will be that he has to walk barefoot over every piece.
davidwritesbugs··on Llama-Scan: Convert PDFs to Text W Local LLMs
I've tried nanonets but it seems very sensitive to the prompt, changing it slightly turned the output to rubbish. When it worked it was pretty good.
davidwritesbugs··on OCaml as my primary language
I abandoned ocaml just because I couldn't get a stepping debugger to work. Can't remember the exact issues but I tried to install in vscode to no avail & I've no interest in emacs
davidwritesbugs··on Mistral Releases Deep Research, Voice, Projects in Le Chat
interestingly the shadows of the tears on the wall didn't get fixed, but a very convincing job otherwise
davidwritesbugs··on After 25 Years, Linux Format Magazine Is No More
This makes me so sad. I wrote a number of articles for them when Nick Veitch was editor. They paid well and respected my copy.
davidwritesbugs··on Why Buy a Camper When You Could Build a Stealthier One Out of Pallets Yourself?
I seem to recall stories of stealth vans being uncovered by passing dogs and I'd imagine he'd be similarly vulnerable.
davidwritesbugs··on Launch HN: Nao Labs (YC X25) – Cursor for Data
Yes I second this. I use sqlite for local use and also for prototyping data designs, so sqlite support is very useful indeed - not a deal breaker but definitely a tick item.
davidwritesbugs··on DEDA – Tracking Dots Extraction, Decoding and Anonymisation Toolkit
If you take a photocopy/scan are the dots detectable in the copy? Asking for a friend.
davidwritesbugs··on NASA's Project Scientist Faces Painful Choices as Voyager Mission Nears Its End
It's stunning to think how well these missions have done and what we've learnt. I'd love to see new missions aimed at much greater longevity with more modern instruments. I wonder how long one could make the mission? 100 years? 200? Would new generators reduce the power loss to less than 4W/year, or would it just need more/much bigger ones?
davidwritesbugs··on A cretaceous fly trap? Remarkable abdominal modification in a fossil wasp
Great informative reply, thanks.
davidwritesbugs··on A cretaceous fly trap? Remarkable abdominal modification in a fossil wasp
It wasn't clear to me how this was like a Venus fly trap: the wasp grabbed prey with a rib cage and... what? Hung on to it till it's larvae developed and consumed the victim ... or what? Sorry, can someone ELI5?
