davidspiess··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
Maybe give F# a try. It's functional, strongly typed and since you already know .NET and C# the ecosystem and tooling will be familiar to you and could lessen the learning curve.
davidspiess··on PostgreSQL is the worlds’ best database
I prefer using Adminer or Azure Data Studio (with pg extension)
davidspiess··on DuckDuckGo Lite
Have you tried start.duckduckgo.com?
davidspiess··on To ORM or Not to ORM
Really interested in your blog post, especially on generating types for the database. Can you give some short insights on how you achieve it?
davidspiess··on New Bitbucket Cloud features
At the moment it takes almost 7 seconds to load a repository details page
davidspiess··on Slate JS – A customizable framework for building rich text editors
I used slate in one of my projects but replaced it eventually with draft.js. The biggest pain points were:

Not stable yet. A lot of breaking changes between releases, so you have to update your code frequently. Breaking changes often introduced new bugs. Big in size (even bigger than draft.js).

davidspiess··on Node.js is now available on App Engine standard environment
Is it possible to downgrade an existing flexible app to standard without changing A records? It seems there is a dedicated page for that, but it leads to a 404. https://cloud.google.com/appengine/docs/standard/nodejs/upgr...
davidspiess··on Why prod is down
It's scary how relatable it is
davidspiess··on Ask HN: Best tech for a web site 2018? (PHP, Rails, Django, Node, Go, etc.)?
You can build a lot using only plug and maybe ecto as orm.
davidspiess··on Ask HN: What do you want to learn in 2017?
I'm about moving out, bought my own flat. Looking forward to be independent. Learn cooking, cleaning and grow some healthy vegetables on my balcony. On the other side i finished a climbing course recently, now i want to practice that further, so i can climb one of the three peaks of Lavaredo. As a programmer i want to take a step back, spending less time in front of the computer and socialize more, though it costs me a lot of energy.
davidspiess··on Next.js – A small framework for server-rendered universal JavaScript apps
Same happened to me (Chrome 54)
davidspiess··on Ask HN: What cool development languages/tools changed your career?
React & redux. Through redux i came in touch with functional programming. During the first week learning it, i came home from work exhausted and with a headache but eventually it clicked and i was amazed how productive and bugfree further development was. I began to adapt the functional style in my PHP projects and started using real functional programming languages (Elixir and F#) to take my understanding even further. Still plenty to learn.
davidspiess··on DDoS protection
From Sunday 11 pm to tuesday morning
davidspiess··on DDoS protection
We are switching away from hetzner managed server as we had ~30 hours of downtime this sunday. They suddenly swapped our valid ssl certificate with a self signed one. They offered no immediate support (i called them three times) and open tickets were left unanswered for another ~20 hours. As i ranted about their customer service on twitter, they finally took care of it. So please stay away from them.
davidspiess··on React/Redux Links: a curated list of tutorials for React, Redux, ES6, and more
Look at this recent pull request by Dan https://github.com/reactjs/redux/pull/1455 It removes the need of the hmr plugin and babel completely, since it uses webpack hot reload directly
davidspiess··on New SourceTree is here
In Windows drag & drop for staging files is gone completely. Happy to see now my stashed content in the small sidebar after the remotes. Overall the release isn't that bad in my opinion.
davidspiess··on No such thing as “real programming” (2015)
I had the same crisis two years ago. I was on vacation and couldn't stand the thought going back to work doing the same odd and boring CMS PHP stuff i used to code day in and day out. My girlfriend left me at the same time, so i decided to make a move. I quit the job, i thougt i was good at, and went to a company which programmed mostly in C# and F#. It was challenging, but at the same time so satisfying to be excited again. I learned about functional programming, looked beyond the horizon of my save little PHP and JS world. I never looked bad to my old me and my old job. Stay curious and if the moment comes you feel stuck, move on to something similar but yet unknown and challenging.
davidspiess··on Ask HN: PHP 7 local development server?
I would say, go with vagrant and laravels homestead box, which comes with PHP 7 already. The documentation is great, so you should be up and running in less then an hour.
