daviddever23box··on Lossless Audio Does Not Sound Better Than MP3
While this article does seem a bit clickbait-y, it's worth pointing out that lossy perceptual audio coding has been getting better; research in this area continues specifically BECAUSE there is a perceptual difference, especially when using different bit rates on the same codec.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Can My Former Employer Control My MacBook After I Bought It from Them?
No - if it was activated under your Apple ID, you're good to go.
daviddever23box··on Flutter plugin in Rust with no prebuilt binaries
Note: it is possible to install rustup via Homebrew without any side effects.
daviddever23box··on Perun2 Programming Language
Fair enough. Page now reads: "tool for creating filesystem automation plugins on Windows OS". That's all one could ask for.
daviddever23box··on Alicia Keys hit a sour note
No AutoTune = actual singing.
daviddever23box··on Perun2 Programming Language
FFS, please change the landing page to indicate that it is Windows-only.
daviddever23box··on Built-in workaround for applications hiding under the MacBook Pro notch
It is perfectly acceptable to provide a zero-cost, command-line focused solution to a single, specific user-interface constraint, while, at the same time, providing additional parametric insight to macOS user preferences.
daviddever23box··on Is Apple breaking PWAs out of malicious compliance?
This is what happens when one lets bureaucrats make technology decisions for end users.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Electron haters, help me understand (your hate)
S-mode was far less about combatting Electron apps and more about privilege escalation holes within Win32 itself. They're orthogonal concerns.

Nonetheless, the Microsoft-managed app ecosystem on Windows is sad for so many reasons. Ask me about Hardware Support Applications....

daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Electron haters, help me understand (your hate)
They'd be footgunning their own revenue stream; JS performance on iOS has been a priority since day one. PWAs are a crucial part of the Apple ecosystem.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Electron haters, help me understand (your hate)
Platform-native webviews are the way to go, same as Apple and Microsoft use for macOS / Windows. Let the OS manage the multiplicity of instances and allow the OS vendor to optimize the webview performance.

If you require native speed, there is zero way to get there via Electron without a convoy of wagons.

daviddever23box··on Google marked this vulnerability as "Won't Fix" but I disagree. Care to comment?
The physical analogy is a cover page, intended to conceal the subsequent contents when stacked on a table.

A tooltip change (warning) to the sharing view would be sufficient to address the concerns that the first page is displayed as part of the preview for those with Google Drive integrations enabled.

You should change your tl;dr to reflect that one can view a preview of the first page of a shared Google Doc, despite not having access, when provided the sharing link and with Google Drive integrations enabled.

daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Semi-automatic build configuration? C++ Modules?
If you don't trust your developers to write clean, readable (yet mission-critical) code, there's little that a command-line only tool can fix for you; you've got bigger problems to worry about.

"Management" seems too worried about the wrong optimizations.

daviddever23box··on What's that touchscreen in my room?
Security through obscurity, I suppose? Seems to be a common thing with UK-based home or energy automation edge devices....
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Office Headphone Syndrome
1. You can learn to communicate with your trusted co-workers in a less-awkward fashion that works for each of you. 2. As mentioned below, DM them first to see if they're free for a face-to-face ("hey-you got a sec?").

Each person has the right to work without distraction, and, in some cases, it may in fact be the case that they do not want you to distract them.

daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Go(lang) Is the New Basic?
Was the old BASIC terribly useful? Not really.
daviddever23box··on M3 CPU cores have become more versatile
This is not actually the case: this can be changed within Logic Pro's settings.
daviddever23box··on Microservices limit the productivity of high performing coders
Which is more important: a maintainable design, or an individual ego?

The implementation (as monolith or microservices) follows from the design, and should be as decoupled from reliance upon the skill set of a single individual developer as is possible.

daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Why is Google killing Waze if so many consider it superior to Maps?
Clickbait. Downsizing a product team does not mean killing the offering, only that there are fewer hands required to maintain its ongoing operations while adding new features as the market dictates.
daviddever23box··on 8GB RAM on M3 MacBook Pro 'Analogous to 16GB' on PCs, Claims Apple
How so? What's your day-to-day experience?
daviddever23box··on The Cloud Computer
Love it.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Recommended Gaming Laptop for Work?
Dell Precision 5680 would be a good choice, if it cannot be Razer.
daviddever23box··on Book Review: Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson
Definitely an eye-opener from my college years....
daviddever23box··on AWS having issues in us-west-2 and us-east-1
Keep your own eggs distributed across multiple boxes, and make your vendors who don't accountable.
daviddever23box··on Toyota blames factory shutdown in Japan on ‘insufficient disk space’
Someone needs to fall on a very sharp sword for this one.
daviddever23box··on Why Golang Is Bad for Smart Programmers?
Boring is good; languages are a tool for communication. If you want poetry, there are lots of side projects to create new dialects atop existing languages (including Go).
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Should Go and Dart be combined into one language?
Better FFI interop with Go might be interesting, though the lack of classes in Go might be a stumbling block to front-end devs more used to OOP.

As a dev that uses Go frequently, and dabbles in Dart / Flutter, I would not complain!

daviddever23box··on How the Piano Helped Me Fall Back in Love with Tech
Yes - and it is maths, (tonal) colors, timing and spatial awareness. I started as a child, moving from an inexpensive (reed) chord organ. Don't exclude other keyboard-based instruments from your travels, either - they all have different response characteristics and timbre.
daviddever23box··on Why VR as Monitor Replacement Is Likely to Be Terrible for a While Yet
To wit, desktop monitors over DisplayPort Alt Mode are terrible enough (wake from sleep and power saving features being the worst culprit).
daviddever23box··on Linux Foundation decreased Linux spending to 3.2% in 2022
Agreed - cloud and container support drives adoption where it matters, and where many of the application use cases can be found.
