davey48016··on The next chapter of the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership
I assume that first refusal required price matching. If the $250B is at a higher price than whatever AWS, GCP, etc. were willing to offer, then it could be a win for Microsoft to get $250B in decent margin business over a larger amount of break even business.
davey48016··on Make any TypeScript function durable
It doesn't explain it on the landing page. Even skimming their docs, it seems like you mostly have to infer the purpose of this based on the features.
davey48016··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
The Ford Ranger is still (or once again?) sold in the US.
davey48016··on A $6B Nuclear U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier 'Sunk' by $100M Diesel 'AIP' Sub
The survivability of aircraft carriers in modern warfare has been in question since the 1980s.

davey48016··on Improved Gemini 2.5 Flash and Flash-Lite
I think it's very cheap right now.
davey48016··on Resurrect the Old Web
Banner ads, pop up ads, pop under ads...If browsers added a feature, then websites used it to show you ads.
davey48016··on Help us raise $200k to free JavaScript from Oracle
I don't like it, but I dislike it less than I dislike the name JavaScript.
davey48016··on WASM 3.0 Completed
https://github.com/golang/go/issues/63904

Skimming this issue, it seems like they weren't expecting to be able to use this GC. I know C# couldn't either, at least based on an earlier state of the proposal.

davey48016··on I feel Apple has lost its alignment with me and other long-time customers
>Sent from my iPhone 13 mini, which is also Too Damn Big.

As someone with small hands, I kind of regret my iPhone 13 mini. I really want something smaller, but if I have to have a phone I can't hold well in one hand, I might as well have a bigger screen.

davey48016··on Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5B to settle lawsuit with book authors
Where I am, the taxi from the airport is about $5 more expensive during off peak, but it can be $20 cheaper during peak hours. I always take the taxi since it's right there, but I usually check the price on Lyft or Uber just to compare.
davey48016··on Microsoft BASIC for 6502 Microprocessor – Version 1.1
I think it's that.

I don't think that the .gitignore file is meant to reflect anything about when this BASIC interpreter was written, it looks like it's just a MS managed .gitignore that accounts for everything that was ever popular for development in Visual Studio, even things that have been obsolete for decades. In order to handle your most legacy C#, F#, VB.NET, or Visual C++ solutions.

davey48016··on Linear sent me down a local-first rabbit hole
I've seen on perm Jira at large companies get that slow. I'm not sure if it's the plugins or just the company being stingy on hardware.
davey48016··on GitHub pull requests were down
That's a single point of failure. If you email code changes around and use an email client that copies everything offline, then the history of your code base is distributed across all of your developers' laptops.
davey48016··on Amazon Is on the Cusp of Using More Robots Than Humans in Its Warehouses
It says "ships themselves". I interpreted that as meaning through their own delivery service versus UPS/USPS, and I thought those third party shipments were still picked up at Amazon warehouses. Meaning this could have much more to do with Amazon building out their delivery service than with warehouse efficiency.

I'm also under the impression that most of the Amazon delivery drivers are contractors, and wouldn't count in "per employee" metrics.

davey48016··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
The blurb at the top says "Republicans in Virginia", but the article body only mentions it was signed by a Republican governor. I think those blurbs are often added by someone other than the author, and that someone probably over extrapolated from the governor of Virginia being a Republican.
davey48016··on iPhone 12 withdrawn from French market for non-compliance with EU regulation
The nuisance lawsuit business model employed by all of our favorite patent trolls.
davey48016··on Waymo and Uber partner to bring autonomous driving technology to Uber
I don't know a lot of people who love Uber, but I know a lot of people who are only ever going to use one ride sharing app. If Waymo's app is limited to a 180 sq. mile territory and only half of their trips are in that territory, they won't bother. The first time the Waymo app tells them they're going outside their territory, it will be back to Uber forever.

I may have an unusually lazy social circle.

davey48016··on Microsoft broke a Chrome feature to promote Edge
The way Google released "experimental" features behind prefixes instead of configuration for years always seemed like a way to get developers to break their sites in non-Chrome browsers as much or more than a way to test features.

I assume that Google's takeaway from the Internet Explorer anti-trust case was that they needed plausible deniability for their non-standard browser features.

davey48016··on Two Office Landlords Defaulting May Be Just the Beginning
I've read that the challenge with a lot of these conversion projects is plumbing. They only have pipes going up certain areas, and apparently that makes it pretty expensive to get a kitchen and bathroom in every unit when you convert it to apartments.
davey48016··on USA Cycling champion dies after being struck by car in San Francisco’s Presidio
The Reddit link that latchkey posted says "A speeding car heading North careened into the opposite lane and hit a cyclist."
davey48016··on Tim Berners-Lee: Web3 is not the web
Any suggestions on projects to look at?
davey48016··on Live Counter of Uber's Net Losses ($27B and Counting)
I see Uber as a very expensive land grab for self driving taxis. Once self driving technology works, especially if multiple companies get it working around the same time, merging/integrating with Uber gets you into the app that everyone is already using to call a ride.
davey48016··on Is Over, Bye GitHub
Github Copilot being trained on (presumably) any/all public repositories on Github without any sort of consent seems to be the last straw for at least some people.
davey48016··on Is Over, Bye GitHub
From the article being linked to: >GitHub is wholly owned by Microsoft, a company whose executives have historically repeatedly attacked copyleft licensing.
davey48016··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejm199710093371506

It's possible that smokers actually end up saving Medicare and Medicaid money, because they die sooner. I've seen articles that estimate it both ways.

davey48016··on We analyzed 100K technical interviews to see where the best performers work
I used to get recruiters messaging me on LinkedIn about my impressive Java experience, in spite of not mentioning Java on my profile. At the time, I was working for a company that used a lot of Java, but I was working on a .NET based product and hadn't touched Java since college.
davey48016··on The day Steve Jobs dissed me in a keynote (2010)
The first time I used Uber was about 6 or 7 years ago. I was living in the DC Suburbs and I had a plane to catch. The night before my flight I called and booked a cab for 6 am. At 6 am there was no cab so I called the dispatcher and asked when they'd be there, they said the cab was on its way and would be there in ten minutes. At 6:15 I called again and they admitted there had never been a cab on the way, there were none available, and they cancelled on me.

I downloaded Uber, signed up for an account, and had a ride by 6:25.

davey48016··on Compensation Data and Trends in the USA
https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/software-engineering-sala...

This is from Europe, but I think it's true in the US as well. Software engineers at large tech companies and venture funded startups get paid a lot, including equity. Software engineers at consultancies or doing internal development at businesses with several thousand employees are on a different salary scale.

davey48016··on Firefox 94 has No Visible Border on unfocused tabs
>Either that, or it’s just the negative opinions being amplified and folks who are happy/satisfied just keep it to themselves.

I think that's it. I like this change, but not enough to post anything about how much I like it.

davey48016··on Oracle's JDK 17 – Free Again for Commercial Use
https://dotnet.microsoft.com/platform/support/policy/dotnet-...

Dotnet LTS versions have three years of support. LTS versions come out every two years, so there is a year of overlap.

The non-LTS (which they call Current) have 18 months of support.
