My start-up is an online payroll system. I entered this crowded market because the competing software has very poor usability. The goal is to allow a novice to easily create a correct payroll. South Africa, Singapore and Ireland. Soon the world.

SimplePay | Ruby on Rails Developers | UTC+0 to UTC+8 | REMOTE | USD42k-USD60k

SimplePay is a profitable, bootstrapped online payroll software company, with solid annual growth. Our software lets 16,000 small business owners (and their accountants) run their South African, Ireland, Singapore and Hong Kong payrolls without headaches, so they can focus on the challenge of building their businesses.

Our development team was already mostly remote pre-pandemic.

To find out more about us, check our developer blog (https://tech.simplepay.cloud) or about page (https://www.simplepay.co.za/about)

Do you believe most SPAs are a pile of steaming crap, but wouldn't mind digging into Vue.js for pages that will benefit from the increased interactivity? Do you laugh when people give up the power of PostgreSQL in favour of data stores that don't offer any benefits for their use case? If so, you may fit in well with our mindset.

Experience: Due to our full pipeline, we can only hire developers who have a few years of Rails experience at this time, or highly experienced polyglots who at least know some Ruby. The work is mostly on the back-end, but some front-end skills are welcome.

Location: UTC+0 to UTC+8

daveungerer··on I almost quit caffeine in one year
Green tea would be a good next step - a bit less caffeine (although I'm sure this could vary between brands) but still satisfies the need for a nice warm drink. I've been having green tea for many months now (after quitting coffee) and I'm not even sure it's worth stopping - I don't get any of the anxiety that I'd get with coffee, for example.

Did you know that developing business software doesn't have to be boring?

At SimplePay, we've brought craftsmanship to payroll software. We love solving thorny business problems with elegant code. That is why I started the company to begin with. This philosophy has brought us 16 000 clients and counting across South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong and Ireland.

Our development team was already mostly remote pre-pandemic.

daveungerer··on Why OKRs might not work at your company
Nowhere in the book is it pitched as a tool you roll out to a bunch of MBAs and hope that good things happen - it's never about out-of-touch managers demanding results. If someone cascades objectives without also cascading planning and estimation, are they not simply a bad manager?

What the book DOES say is that you should not create such a fear of failure that no-one will set stretch goals, and that OKR results should not replace individual performance evaluations. In short, OKRs are what you seem to think they are, plus the culture that makes it possible. If an organisation doesn't get that right, are they doing OKRs?

If your organisation does not allow developers to push back against impossible objectives, do you not perhaps have bigger problems that OKRs (or any other system) can't fix for you? Why would you blame OKRs - would any other system not also be painful when a company has become so dysfunctional? Also, did you know that all objectives don't need to cascade - some can be set bottom-up?

You're going to call No True Scotsman fallacy, and I'm going to call Straw Man, so I'm done with this thread. Perhaps I just fell for John Doerr's elaborately constructed fantasy that he uses to sell books. But right now it seems like a useful tool to keep a company on track, and I'll keep adapting it as the company grows.

daveungerer··on Why OKRs might not work at your company
It feels like OP has made a bit of a straw man out of OKRs. More charitably, perhaps we did not get our information from the same place - all I know about OKRs is from reading "Measure What Matters" and implementing it in my own company. Reading this article makes me feel like someone took an incredibly simple idea and decided that what it needs is more complication.

From TFA: "most companies are not set up to effectively apply this technique". Yes. And if you read the above book, you'll learn that this is sort of the point. You WILL fail at your first few OKR cycles, but you're supposed to use those experiences to change your company into one that CAN set and achieve objectives.

If you think your company is one where OKRs won't work, all the more reason to do them.

OKRs are about creating and communicating strategic short-term objectives across the company, so they remain top of mind. And that's 80% of what you need to know! The objections to OKRs mentioned in the article don't make sense to me, because it seems to follow a different definition of what OKRs are.

The story (skip this paragraph if you don't like stories in your job posts): I founded and continue to run this startup. Most of the team works from our office in South Africa. However, a year ago I moved Singapore for work / personal reasons. I used to be quite averse to the idea of remote workers, but seeing as just about everyone will now be remote from my perspective, I decided it's a good time to start focusing on hiring for remote work.

The work will include: Expanding our API for other systems to integrate with us. Adding new features. Optimising for performance. Integrating with government systems. Doing direct integrations with banks that offer good APIs. Squashing bugs. Eventually, the opportunity to do some mobile development (probably using Flutter).

Experience: Due to our full pipeline, we can only hire developers who have a few years of Rails experience at this time, or highly experienced polyglots who at least know some Ruby. Previous experience with remote work would be a bonus - we need people who understand the challenges and can share what they've learnt.

SimplePay is online payroll software for South Africa, Ireland, Singapore and Hong Kong. Our software lets thousands of small business owners (and their accountants) run their payrolls without headaches, so they can focus on the challenge of building their businesses.

The work will include: Doing direct integrations with banks that offer good APIs; Expanding our API for other systems to integrate with us; Adding new features; Optimising for performance; Integrating with government systems; Squashing bugs; Eventually, the opportunity to do some mobile development (maybe using Flutter).

Experience: Due to our full pipeline, we can only hire developers who have a few years of Rails experience at this time, or polyglots who at least know Ruby. Previous experience with remote work would be a bonus - we need people who understand the challenges and can share what they've learnt.

Location: Most of the team is in GMT+2, and I'll be in GMT+8 going forward. So anything from GMT+2 to GMT+8 should be OK.

Please mail careers@simplepay.co.za and put "Hacker News" somewhere in the subject. I look forward to transforming the company to being more remote-friendly.

daveungerer··on Financial Modeling for Startups: An Introduction
I think it would be good to have a bottom up forecast for the first 12 months. Apart from that, a disciplined forecast will clearly show how the calculation was derived and what assumptions went into it. You should not have to dig through a bunch of data to gain insight into the mindset of the forecaster - the forecaster is supposed to put that info in the model! If they can justify year 1's sales expenses by mentioning that it's for 2 sales people + an SDR, then great! Just don't expect that granularity in year 3.

It's quite easy to avoid the "3.5 people" issue by making it a step function (i.e. rounding). Once again your assumptions become explicit, which is good. E.g. you might decide that one person can do the work of 1.3 employees (people can do this for a while when it's needed!) and round everything above that up to 2.

However, when forecasting 3 years in advance as in the article, the fact that your model has you hiring fractional people becomes less important.

daveungerer··on Financial Modeling for Startups: An Introduction
If you're forecasting at such a granular level 3 years in advance, your variances will be all over the place, which is not terribly useful to analyse. It won't be as per your example. It will be "I thought I'd hire one of person x, but instead ended up hiring 2 of person y, and delayed hiring z to compensate". The aggregate variance is what matters when you're doing a long term forecast.

A granular 12 month forecast is very useful for the reason you described, but we're discussing longer time horisons here.

daveungerer··on Financial Modeling for Startups: An Introduction
Decent article, thanks for writing it. I think more founders should do a bit of financial modeling.

That said, I think most founders should not be forecasting salary expenses on a per-position basis, even if they're under 100 employees. In my experience, you definitely won't know which positions you'll be hiring for further out than 1 year. If you're trying to impress investors it might work, but it will have limited utility for you personally.

Instead, you should group salaries by function (e.g. sales, engineering) and then make explicit your assumptions about labour efficiency. In the model described in the article, these assumptions are also there, but spread out over 40 rows in a table - not good! Assumptions in models should always be explicit.

For example, you could say that, in order to maintain your projected growth, you need to spend 10% of your revenue on sales staff. Or if you're aiming to be funded, you might instead work out how much labour it might take to make one sale, and then extrapolate based on how many sales you intend to make in the year.

You could look at engineering and decide you need 1 person in your engineering team (disregarding job title) per 100 clients. Then extrapolate, once again, based on number of projected clients. Obviously, software is meant to be scalable, so this all depends on how much up-front development you intend to do and at what pace you intend to add new features, so you might want to factor your growth targets in too.

Now, organisations normally bring in layers of management as teams grow. Do you need to account for this? Probably not. Remember, we're focusing on labour efficiency. These managers might increase your costs, but the idea is that they also help your teams function in a scalable way. And if you have good managers, the average tenure at your company should increase, leading to higher productivity.

The benefit of the above approach is that, now that all your assumptions have been made explicit, you can easily tweak them to see how they impact your model, rather than having to dig through many rows of data.

Lastly, and this is nit-picking, but ignoring income tax means this model should only be used to forecast up to periods where the company is not profitable. As soon as there's profit it will be completely wrong. Although it's a nice simplifying assumption if all you're trying to model is your road to break-even.

SimplePay | Analyst Developer | Cape Town, South Africa | REMOTE

The story (skip this paragraph if you don't like stories in your job posts): I founded and continue to run this startup. Most of the team works from our office in South Africa. However, 2 months ago I moved Singapore for work / personal reasons. I used to be quite averse to the idea of remote workers, but seeing as just about everyone will now be remote from my perspective, I decided it's a good time to start focusing on hiring for remote work. We've already hired 3 remote developers though HN!

This month we're not looking for regular developers, but rather something I've often seen referred to as an Analyst Developer. This position is much more focused on requirements, but you'll still need solid programming skills. If you think you'd enjoy researching tax / employment compliance issues for different countries, speccing out a design and then moving to implementation, this position would suit you.

The work will include: Doing research on tax / employment laws and procedures for new markets we want to enter. Speccing the implementation for a country and doing most of the implementation, with help from more technology-focused developers for the more complicated parts. Doing updates for our existing markets as legal requirements change over time.

Experience: You'll need a lot of experience in gathering requirements and creating specs. Most of your requirement-gathering will involve research, but there will be some human interaction too - there will be a lot of debate about the best way to help our clients be compliant in the most user-friendly way! As such, a good feel for UX will come in handy too. Any programming experience is OK, but Ruby is preferred.

Location: Most of the team is in GMT+2, and I'll be in GMT+8 going forward. So anything from GMT+0 to GMT+8 should be OK, unless you keep unusual working hours. We are a registered employer in South Africa and Singapore, so it would be hassle-free if you're based in those countries.
