> You completely ignored the most important sentence in my comment which addresses this.

I did not. I've addressed it at least 2 times now. If you choose to ignore those responses that invalidate your point that is of your own doing.

> The logic is written in PHP just as much as it is written in C.

Nope. I have already shown this assertion of yours to be false as there is no requirement for the runtime to be written in C.

> The logic is actually written in the language the creator used. Which is the wordpress UI.

Issuing commands to a program (which is what is happening) does not make those commands a programming language.

> I wouldn't consider it python code if it is a cookie cutter website where the creator didn't have to write a single line of python.

So if I got someone else to press the deploy button in bitbucket, it suddenly isn't python code? That doesn't make sense does it?

> Why don't you consider each and every website running PHP also a C website?

The web site/app logic is written in PHP, not C. The runtime for the vast majority of PHP deployments happens to be written in C.

Additionally while I did say interpreted earlier that really isn't true anymore. PHP runtimes these days tend to break the PHP script down into byte-code. There are alternative runtimes for PHP just as there is Java or .NET.

There are at least 4 I can think of. Two of those aren't C (C++ and .NET). However there is nothing stopping you from writing a runtime that runs on the JVM / Lisp / Go / Brainfuck / Lol code / 68k assembler.

The categorisation you are trying to make us accept is ridiculous.

I can deploy a python web application I have written to a new web server within minutes by clicking deploy in bitbucket.

So using your definition:

* The code is already written.

* I clicked a few menus and I had the python code I wanted running.

It isn't a python application. However the web application when it receives a request will run python code. It is clearly a python based web application.

Probably but you can still have the configuration secure as default and people would be aware of the security implications when enabling insecure features.

> But he uploaded a video containing Nazi imagery while he said, more than 20 times, "Gas The Jews".

You keep on saying this because it sounds shocking to people who haven't watched the video, without the proper context it sounds bad i.e. It was clearly a joke intended to annoy his girlfriend.

I could describe the 2013 Wolfenstein games as "gruesome killing simulator that is full of nazi imagery" and without the proper context it would sound bad i.e. you are playing a guy fighting against a Nazi occupied Europe.

This is again incredibly disingenuous way to describe the video and you know it. That is why you continuously ignore the other parts of the video that explain the context. I find it pretty disgusting that you obviously know lots about the case and ignore the facts that don't fit your narrative.

This is exactly what the court did at the trial. This is why the trial was done with a magistrate and not a jury as if a jury saw it they would have probably laughed at it.

The accepted method is convert projects to .NET standard and/or multi-target project itself. I haven't run into any issues but most of what I do is web projects, I wouldn't know if it was something like WPF.

I install PHP on my server (yeah I know) to run some PHP based web based software. By default PHP is configured in a very insecure manner. You would think with all the security problems that they would ship it with a set of secure defaults.

> You realise that winning on appeal means the original conviction didn't happen right?

As previously explained I don't think the whole series of events should have happened.

The conviction was only overturned because she was diagnosed with autism. If she hadn't have been diagnosed with the condition the conviction would have stayed.

> First of all you claimed he was imprisoned for this, and he wasn't.

I never claimed he was. However he could have been and probably didn't see jail time because of the amount of publicity and support he had outside of the court.

> He chose to use the "it was just a joke bro" defence, and failed because he couldn't show that she had even seen the video.

As I said he was arrest before she could have seen it. It was clearly intended as a joke against his girlfriend. He clearly states this twice in the video, you conveniently ignore this fact. It is also convenient you don't acknowledge this or the part where he crudely photoshops a hitler tash onto his dog and plays an old horror sound effect from the 1960s television.

> He uploaded it to Youtube with the intent that it would be seen by other people, thus completing the crime.

It should not be a crime.

The other people were his mates, conveniently you ignored this when I stated it. It was obviously not intended to be seen by a large number of people. They misused a law meant for television broadcasts and applied it to youtube.

This is disingenuous interpretation of events. Again you are being disingenuous because you want to be right.

> This is what was found at his original trial. He has not appealed against this finding.

He did file appeals, they were rejected and if you read the rejections their reasoning was ridiculous. Also the courts reading of the situation is obvious bullshit. He had 8 subscribers when he posted the video (I know because I saw the reddit thread that made the video go viral) and I remember seeing his subscriber count at the time. Those people were most likely his mates.

Again this is disingenuous interpretation of events.

> You claimed he'd been imprisoned for it and he hasn't.

I never claimed this.

> You still haven't named the cases. You're getting the genre wrong btw, it's drill not grime.

It like saying modern R'n'B and Garage are different. They are basically the same beats played at a different speed with a slightly different style.

They Drill, Grime etc are all basically people rapping over a beat and is pretty much just Hip Hop really. This is a silly point to make.

> and they were imprisoned for breaking an injunction that was aimed at tackling gang violence: they made credible death threats to other members of gangs.

The injunction should not exist, it will be another thing that will be abused by the police. As for credible threats of violence Rappers used to make threats against each other all the time back in the 1980s.

In the album Hijack "The Horns of Jericho", the rapper is instructing a man with a sword to abduct, torture and kill Andrew Lloyd Webber. No such chain of events occurred because of the song lyrics.

The knife crime epidemic in London has nothing to do with the type of music being played. As previously stated politicians will demonise the music to distract from the real problem.

People should not be locked up for song lyrics. This is ridiculous. There is no credible threats of violence through song lyrics.

> For you to claim that these 2 cases equate to widespread human rights abuse in China is laughable.

I never said they equatable. I never claimed that. Another misrepresentation of what I said.

I think the UK is going down a very dangerous path because of these laws and I think we will eventually lead up in a similar state as what is happening in China.

Yes. Most of the world's websites run on it.
davesmith1983··on Dark Matter Developers: The Unseen 99% (2012)
For the most part the situation is the same with .NET. Any code written in .NET 2.0 should work with 4.7.

The newer .NET Core most stuff is now compatible and it is pretty easy to write code that is compatible. Stuff that isn't compatible normally needs you to install a compat shim that Microsoft provides, but I've not needed them so far.

My major frustration is with the JS frameworks. I wrote some perfectly good Angular 4 code and I had to change quite a lot of it to work with newer versions of the framework.

> Chelsea Russell: not convicted.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-43816921

Yes she was. It was only overturned later because she has (I believe) autism.

The whole point I was making is that it should not happen in the first place.

Do you think we should be dragging autistic teenage girls through court because of rap lyric posted on facebook? I think it is ridiculous.

> Count Dankula: broadcast the phrase "gas the jews", then did not use a freedom of speech argument in court, instead saying "it was just a joke". His "I am using this to annoy my girlfriend" defence failed because there's no evidence she even saw the video, and if he was just doing it to annoy her there was no need to broadcast it to his youtube channel.

The video was obviously a joke and if you just repeat the phrases said on their own without context they don't sound funny. The whole joke is that he is getting his dog which has no idea what those phrases mean to react to them. It is a really old gag that you do something stupid in front of an animal because they are the ultimate dead-pan actor.

As to why his girlfriend didn't see it, it went viral (via reddit) before he had the chance to show her. The reason why it was on Youtube is because they have a night where they just watch Youtube video together and he wanted it to be like a surprise prank. At the time (I know because I followed the case since he got arrested) he had 8 subscribers on his account. His story has been consistent from day one before he lawyered up.

Again he should have never been arrested over what was clearly intended as a joke.

MPs in the House of Commons admitted that the law should be under review because of his case.

The way you tell the situation doesn't give full picture. Almost every-time someone just cherry picks phrases from the video like you did I know they are being disingenuous.

> It's pretty hard to have this conversation with someone who admits they don't know what they're talking about.

The point is that you shouldn't have any legal proceeding against you because of a song. London Grime much like heavy metal (70s) and gangsta rap (80s and 90s) before them is being demonised by the moral puritans. I suspect they will take another run at violent video games once Doom Eternal comes out or GTA6.

This again is disingenuous of you. This makes it pretty obvious you aren't speaking in good faith. Bye.

davesmith1983··on Pentagon testing mass surveillance balloons across the US
No not at all. The Chelsea Russell case 17 year old girl on facebook posted rap lyrics, we also have the 'Count Dankula' case which the Scottish court decided it was "Nazi Recruitment" ignoring the context where he clearly said "I am using this to annoy my girlfriend" at the start of the video. I believe there is also a case where some Grime rappers were charged with hate speech for their songs ... this would be the equivalent of locking NWA up for the Straight Outta Compton album.

So no it isn't clear at all.

davesmith1983··on Pentagon testing mass surveillance balloons across the US
The article is about surveillance, the STASI were known for their insane levels of surveillance. The last time I checked there was a huge number of security cameras in the UK, maybe more than any other country.

Also the UK has put people in prison for the nebulous crime of "hate speech". There are seven hate speech convictions per day, though I suspect most of these are fines and a criminal record.

So the UK is going down the same road as China.

Well the UK isn't much better now.

davesmith1983··on Dark Matter Developers: The Unseen 99% (2012)
I've seen this article before. A lot of people that are active on the internet like to assume that everyone is using the latest tech and can just use whatever tech they like. This is rarely the case. I've spent the majority of my career tending to old code bases.

There is a lot of legacy code that is still working fine. There is a lot of old C# code bases that are working exactly as intended in now unsupported .NET versions.

One of the constant annoyances of some of the newer tech stacks is that developers constantly break the API meaning that when you upgrade the framework version you have to fix code and probably tests as well. It is absolutely infuriating when an API is changed when the old API was working perfectly well.

davesmith1983··on Facebook Plans on Backdooring WhatsApp?
There is new pressure in the UK to backdoor encryption and their target is facebook / whatapp.

So I am not surprised.

davesmith1983··on Plastic bag sales in England halved in past year
Almost all the plastic bags sold from major supermarket chains in the UK were bio-degradable. After a few years they literally turned into dust.

I actually had one of these single use bags long enough in a closet for it to degrade to the point where it was basically dried paper mulch.

davesmith1983··on Technician keeps computer made in 1959 still humming along
No not at all. I have seen the cleaners and have spoken to them and they are clearly women. One of them told me that she has no idea what we do, what the computers are used for and has never used a desktop pc. I doubt she is unique among her peers.

Quite a lot of people that do "Blue Collar" jobs that are in their 50s and 60s probably don't have to interact with a computer that often (I know my father doesn't). If they do it is normally through a kiosk of some sort or they are using their phone.

I was actually adjusting my coworkers expectations. He is younger than me and the thought hadn't entered his mind that someone may have never used a modern computer.

So in future before you start spouting about people being entitled, maybe you should not make a bunch of assumptions that is based on your incorrect reading of a comment.

davesmith1983··on Technician keeps computer made in 1959 still humming along
I did no such thing! I have personally spoken to them and they have told me they have no idea how to use the desktop machines.

I was simply trying to explain to my colleague who has known a world with modern computers being prevalent that there are still many people that have never used them.

davesmith1983··on Technician keeps computer made in 1959 still humming along
We have some cleaners come in and they always constantly rearrange the keyboard, desk monitors etc. Which normally causes a few groans in the morning as everything has been moved. One guy was having a moan about it and I said "You know the women that clean this probably have never used a computer other than maybe their phone?".

> As computer-assisted proofs become more and more popular, expect plenty of cross-polination between software engineers and Mathematicians.

Similar things were said in the 1950s and 1960s. I don't remember specifics but our lecturers told us that computer scientists back then thought that they could actually just mathematically express a program and there would be no need for a programmer.

The Vienna Development Method has been around for god knows how many years and have never caught on.

Saying that programming is like maths, is the same as saying cooking is like chemistry. Sure there is lots of chemistry going on in the food, but I doubt many chefs know or care about the chemical properties of organic compounds.

Additionally we actually did a course on VDM back in 2006/2007 and the lecturer said that he had only encountered one team that proved their program to be correct and it took them about a decade.

You could argue the code itself is the mathematical expression. But honestly as someone that has a very strong Maths background and moved to Software Engineering most software unless you are doing something very specific like a sorting algorithm a lot of code isn't really that algorithmic, you are in the vast majority of cases just expressing a set of business rules and that is in my experience is best described by Use Cases / User Stories.

For most businesses this is simply a waste of time. Getting developers to write tests is hard enough and businesses don't see the benefit until things start going horrifically wrong.

This is what they do on gambling websites in the UK.

Similarly if you are in a Casino you will never see a clock anywhere. Also generally food and drink is pretty cheap and there is normally table service in a Casino because they want you to be at the tables spending your cash.

I own some old kit that I like to keep working mainly some Amiga and Atari ST machines and he's 100% right. Unless people see what they are doing they literally assume they are some sort of keyboard.

davesmith1983··on Moving the Linux desktop to another reality
This is going to be another compiz cube. It looks cool, but I doubt it will be very useful outside of showing off some cool tech.

Also Valve tbh have dropped a lot of their more interesting tech. I had one of their steam links which isn't even sold anymore. The steam link was actually pretty useful for steaming anything on your desktop, I am sure you can do the same with a Raspberry Pi and some scripts but it worked pretty well if you hooked up a mouse and keyboard.
