datashow··on How to fight lies, tricks, and chaos online
I don't know I am a neocon. I just found that report makes good points. Are you saying all the evidence provided in the article are false and we can firmly trust the Taliban, or we should just pull troops out?
datashow··on How to fight lies, tricks, and chaos online
I think different people have different criteria on "trustworthy".

Most are only looking for confirmation. There are a few are looking for nonpartisan, unbiased reports.

For those who are interested in nonpartisan, unbiased reports. I highly recommend https://thedispatch.com/ . Yes, they clearly state they are conservative leaning, but I found their reports are very good. I also would like to know any liberal leaning website like this .

datashow··on Florida joins U.S. government in probing foreign ties of researchers
For internationals, it is easier to get Visa and Green Card in academia.
datashow··on Florida joins U.S. government in probing foreign ties of researchers
I think the unfortunate truth is that US academia job market is already highly saturated.

Look, a professor may need 5 to 10 PhD students, but there won't be so many positions open when those students graduate. In the past physics and biology graduates will try to stay as postdoc or research assistant as long as possible. Or find a position in industry. Nevertheless, this is just not a sustainable model in the long run. Eventually it will come to a point where more and more of them will go back to their home country.

Thank you.

Most Thousand Talents Program recruits are Chinese nationals studying and working in the U.S. Some of them may have green card, but mostly are not U.S. citizens. This is not a patriotism issue.

The money is not just the directly reward from the Thousand Talents Program. Being a Thousand Talents Program recruit, you can easily become a professor and lab director in China. This gives you money and status.

I knew a physicist worked in a 100~150 rank state University as a research scientist for a decade, low pay, cannot find a tenure position. But he got in the Thousand Talents Program, so he left the U.S. and became a professor in a top 10 University in China.

datashow··on Google pushed to take action against Android bloatware
The two most common sources of bloatware I saw when I was using Samsung phones were: AT&T and Samsung. Not only the number of bloatwares is crazy, they keeps coming back (from OS update?).
datashow··on Google vs. Oracle: The Supreme Court will decide software development’s future?
There are different philosophies here. I'm mostly with you. I too believe the court should apply the law, not invent the law. On the other hand, there are people who believe the court should just make the "right" decision, take history to the "right" path.

However, I do have problem with your statement "without any consideration at all for the social impact". I fear this statement goes to an extreme which would never be hold by any judge in real life.

By the way, it's not only the judges and the law make the case, lawyers of both sides are also important in the process.

datashow··on Low unemployment isn’t worth much if the jobs barely pay
I have never heard of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics being politically motivated. This is a very new accusation. Do you have any reference?
datashow··on Low unemployment isn’t worth much if the jobs barely pay
Is the left citing labor participation rate during the Trump administration? This is strange, because the labor participation rate is recovering since Trump elected.
datashow··on Australia's Wildfires Spark Disinformation Battle as They Take a Tragic Toll
But we are talking about the specific case here, aren't we?
datashow··on Australia's Wildfires Spark Disinformation Battle as They Take a Tragic Toll
Sorry, I meant anthropogenic climate change. I didn't know that's the confusion.
datashow··on Australia's Wildfires Spark Disinformation Battle as They Take a Tragic Toll
Is it possible some other climate factors, other than climate change, caused dry forests and fires?

Are you saying without climate change, this Australia wildfire would never have happened?

datashow··on Australia's Wildfires Spark Disinformation Battle as They Take a Tragic Toll
Your first paragraph didn't mention climate change. Is it now established that record breaking temperatures are always caused by climate change?

OK. I got downvoted on this. What is wrong here?

datashow··on Australia's Wildfires Spark Disinformation Battle as They Take a Tragic Toll
What? I never noticed I put those quotes... Weird. I just removed the quotes. ...

On the main point. Yes, correlation is easy. Causation? I don't know, because I don't work in climate science. Is obvious correlation sufficient to establish causation in climate science?

datashow··on Australia's Wildfires Spark Disinformation Battle as They Take a Tragic Toll
Even if we accept "all the bush is super dry and it's very hot means it is most likely that would start a fire anyway", this is still far from linking the fires to climate change.

I am not saying it is not linked to climate change, but to establish scientific evidence to this causal link requires complicated analyses.

Why am I getting downvoted for this? Someone care to explain?

datashow··on Things that I think will be important in the next decade
I don't understand your attitude towards him. When I read his post, I didn't feel this way at all.

It seems the problems you have with is rooted on the nature of big corporations. Basically all the big companies are doing those things, especially regulatory capture.

How is replacing Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg with anybody else will give you a Utopia Facebook?

datashow··on A review of the effects of installing air filters in classrooms
If the air pollution is really a problem, shouldn't the locals address this problem for the sake of public health?

This is something I don't understand. Is it possible that the air pollution doesn't create health problem, but only creates cognitive problem?

datashow··on A note on reading big, difficult books
I spend lots of time to compare the table of contents. I'll try to find the one I feel most logical to me as the first book. And then I will also find the most comprehensive book for reference.
datashow··on A note on reading big, difficult books
It's very dangerous to sticking to one book. Because you don't know the field, you don't know which book is the best for you.

Different introductory books can organize the topics very differently. Some introductory books could miss the crucial explanation of the most important concepts.

Sometimes you can just find one single sentence in one book connects all the dots together, and you will be like: this sentence solved my so many questions, why didn't all the other books mention this?

Or just play PBS kids, which has apps on multiple platforms, good quality, and totally free.

Right now my kids are small. I think PBS kids should be enough for them. When they want to find something else to watch, I know they just had too much screen time and they need to do something else other than watching TV.

datashow··on Deceased GOP Strategist's Daughter Makes Files Public
If the data is not encrypted then all my data can be automatically taken by my spouse and kids, used in any way they want? How is it not scary?

I don't see how this is easily comparable to my monetary properties.

datashow··on Deceased GOP Strategist's Daughter Makes Files Public
This seems only change the subject of question from children to spouse. Does this change the nature of the question? I mean do your spouse automatically own your data when you die?
datashow··on Deceased GOP Strategist's Daughter Makes Files Public
It is true there are relevant precedents. I guess the difference is that in this digital age the scope of data is far greater than data on the paper. I don't know whether this truly matters.
datashow··on Deceased GOP Strategist's Daughter Makes Files Public
How do you know it's her property? I guess it was her father's property and now is in her possession. Does this automatically become her property? The device and the data?

I guess we have a generation facing this new problem. I have only seem discussion about how services like Facebook should handle the data of deceased people. I didn't realize your kids (and spouse?) can just take your device and release it. This future seems scary to me.

"These are matters that concern the people and their franchise and their access to resources. This is, therefore, the property of the people".

Is this true?

datashow··on Slab – Team Wiki and Knowledge Base
Curious to know why would anyone want to use this kind of service instead of the wiki / discussion / documentation / issue tracking provided by the project management system? I know this service can "integrate" (mostly just links) with other system. I still don't see what the value added of this system can overcome the pain of using two systems.

May be mostly for teams do not use project management?

I don't know. "no daddy in their lives" makes me interpret differently. I guess.

OK. I just figured out. I interpret "no daddy in their lives" as they never had a daddy present ever. This could be my mistake.
