dataminded··on Ask HN: I have diagnosed ADHD and cannot work with Slack anymore – advice?
You do want to be that person that is not reachable. There is no value in being available 24/7 unless your job is oncall and responsible for addressing fires in real-time.

Shut off slack, sign-off and coach people on how to reach you. They should rely on batch systems that you check a couple times a day or they can call or however else contact you in an emergency that requires real-time engagement.

You can also do office hours, where you are reliably online and chatting at known and published time.

Slack is cool because it makes everyone feel important in exchange for them giving up their time and productivity.

dataminded··on Most people don’t finish online job applications
We need a standard schema for resume data. This problem shouldn't be an ML problem.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Is long-term employee commitment to the same company still appreciated?
Do what works for you.
dataminded··on Elasticsearch SQL
What query languages have you found that are better than SQL?

[edit] Typo.

dataminded··on More U.S. companies charging employees for job training if they quit
I don't understand why the employer merits protection from the employee in this case.

The employers could, offer bonus payments for the employees tenure, top of market salaries, equity in the business, or secure private insurance to cover losses if the employee leaves.

Asking an employee, to pay you money so that you can make money from their labor shouldn't be legal.

dataminded··on Launch HN: Nimbus (YC W22) – Cloud dev environments for teams
I LOVED Codenvy! Kudos.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Should I buy the nicest house I can afford?
I wish that I had bought a four unit multi-family for my first home. Let someone else pay the mortgage and put money in my pocket and only bought a single family home after I had meaningful equity in that investment property. Banking on the appreciation of your own home feels wasteful as you'd have to put yourself in more debt or give up your home to use that equity.
dataminded··on Show HN: I built an email marketing tool made for indie hackers and solopreneurs
I think you want to limit the number of 'profiles' that you send unlimited emails to. It lets your income grow in line with your customer's ability to pay and limits your liability.
dataminded··on I regret my website redesign
You hire an agency when you can afford to grossly overpay and because time is more important to you than money.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Anyone else quickly losing confidence in Amazon?
There's room for an amazon competitor -- it would be really capital intensive.
dataminded··on Does Money Buy Happiness?
The ability to meet your basic needs is a precondition to happiness. To think differently is to never have experienced both sides.
dataminded··on When No-Code Stops Scaling (2020)
I've been around when these tools are being recommended or trialed -- the champion is never someone that understands anything about writing code. It is a way to reduce labor costs by getting Product Managers, Project Managers, Business folks and QA to generate code. I have never seen this work out.
dataminded··on You probably don’t need AWS and are better off without it
You worry about lock-in once you know that you have product-market fit and your current technology is inhibiting development or scale.
dataminded··on You probably don’t need AWS and are better off without it
Pricing isn't an actual concern when you are just getting started. Why would you be worried about vendor-lock if you haven't built anything? If you run your entire solution on a server that you manage, you are also on the hook for backups, recovery, and every other problem that AWS already solved.
dataminded··on Rooms and mazes: A procedural dungeon generator (2014)
It'd be great if someone connected this to a virtual table top like Foundry. You could get maps, lighting, encounters, etc. at the press of a button. It would really enable the online-first, one-shot friendly reality of TTRPGs.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Have you ever switched cloud?
Yes. I got a new job at a new company.
dataminded··on Ask HN: When do you give up on Silicon Valley?
Not by a meaningful amount. Worst hit that I've heard of was 15%.
dataminded··on Ask HN: When do you give up on Silicon Valley?
Why not work remote? You keep the pay and give up the costs.
dataminded··on I don't need a VPS anymore
Maybe next decade. I really like my various VPS.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Google has locked me out of the account
All that for a free account? Why would Google do all that?
dataminded··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2022)
Amazing product -- I wish you all much success!
dataminded··on Ask HN: Easiest way to build a CRUD app?
1. The tool you already know 2. Django
dataminded··on Don't make me think, or why I switched to Rails from JavaScript SPAs
You have to know enough about the choices and their edge cases to make good choices. You are also at the mercy of all of those choices continuing to evolve in complementary ways in the future.
dataminded··on Don't make me think, or why I switched to Rails from JavaScript SPAs
I stopped writing go for this reason. Every discussion about frameworks seemed to be shut down in favor of "piece it together" + "standard library"
dataminded··on Don't make me think, or why I switched to Rails from JavaScript SPAs
I've been trying hard to make the migration from Django to Javascript for my dev work (95% of the time, I am building internal tools in a hurry) and it's been a major slog. I can write JS just fine, but spend all of my time trying to build a functional environment with the correct set of libraries and dependencies.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Would an office with no mandatory work hours function?
I think that giving people autonomy works and can be great. It is challenging when one person's job requires the attendance of a 2nd person. At some point, one person(s) gets to set the schedule for other people and being able to resolve those clashes is important.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Is it unusual to consistently fail on sites interviews for years
Ask friends to mock interview you and give you feedback.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Should I sell my software to my employer?
If you are having at least half the impact that you think you are having, and he's running a real business, decline the offer.

10K is less than peanuts for software. Go sell your software to his competitors for $x0,000 per month.

dataminded··on Ask HN: Sales Team Growth
That sounds like a really fun project. I worked at a similar company previously. It was tough, inside sales is a difficult thing to hire/train for. My advice is to consider two hires -- a growth person to own eCommerce leads and a sales person to close those. Once you have a good handle for the funnel, you should be well positioned to figure out what quotas should look like and how to scale the sales org. You don't need the more complicated sales roles right now (sales ops, sales managers, etc), you need a funnel that you can measure and plan against.
