datalist··on Ask HN: Hash in url identifier?
Its only Medium, Backchannel uses Medium

The bit is the anchor of the URL and seems to be there purely for tracking purposes, according to https://www.reddit.com/r/webdev/comments/3uyd9e/why_does_med...

datalist··on Trump’s H-1B Visa Crackdown Threatens Cutting-Edge U.S. Medicine
Let us have our daily Trump bashing ;)
datalist··on ROBOTS.TXT is a suicide note
Nothing in their rambling even remotely supports their argument.

Yes, robots.txt is no magic bullet against ill-behaving crawlers (as proven by ArchiveTeam) but it never was supposed to be that.

You choose to ignore my specific wish not to be crawled by you? Fair enough, I'll return the favour and simply block your useragent

  ArchiveTeam ArchiveBot/[DATECODE] (wpull [VERSION]) and not Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/[VERSION] Safari/537.36
In Apache for example

  # Remove the ^ anchor in case text gets prepended
  RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^ArchiveTeam
  RewriteRule .* - [F,L]
and if possible your IP ranges.

The same way they always got there.

> if you have outdated dependency artifacts, it doesn't make sense to compile without fetching them

I am sorry, I'd contest that. There are often cases where one might not want to use the most current version of some library (incompatibility, undesired features, etc.).

This entire forced update approach is already unpleasant enough in the context of applications (most notably on Android and IOS) but becomes unbearable for software development. While one might argue it could still make some sense for the former, as average users might stay forever with old versions and potential security issues, that argument should not be valid in a "professional" context - where the "users" know about the implications - as it should be given with software engineering.

datalist··on Rust required to build Gecko
Separation of concerns

On one hand frameworks and code in general becomes more and more bloated and incomprehensible these days, due to an overzealous approach in the aforementioned. On the other hand tools are getting cramped with features which were never in their original scope.

The leftpad issue was only one example of that lets-inject-third-party-code-on-the-fly mentality.

datalist··on Rust required to build Gecko
That cannot be emphasised enough. Unfortunately it falls on deaf ears. If a compile does not download at least 56 megabytes these days you can consider it a failure ;).
datalist··on Android puzzle game
Just noticed you already reduced the permissions, wonderful :). Will give it a try shortly.

* Phone, read phone status and identity

* Device ID & call information, read phone status and identity

No, thanks!

While not just as bad, full network access is also questionable. Sorry for the blunt feedback, but an application should only use the minium set of permissions it needs to provide its service.

datalist··on The government will respond to calls for a second EU referendum
> less than 60% based a turnout less than 75%

Conveniently matching the current figures. Either they should have declared that before the result (which they did not as it seems) or have left them out completely, simply stating they want a second vote.

I agree the figures are very close, but still it's the majority. Would they have also called for a second vote if it was reversed?

datalist··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
I am afraid I cant comment on the job situation. Its probably not exactly the European counterpart of Silicon Valley :) but they nonetheless have a fair share of IT companies. Maybe check out http://www.karriere.at/jobs/edv-it-organisation?states%5B0%5...

As for the city, yes it's quite a nice one, good infrastructure, lots of cultural heritage, nice environment and so on .... for the past six years it ranked #1 in Mercer's list of quality of living survey. Though to be fair, last time I was there I do admit I had the impression some things changed and it seems it has become less safe recently. So that might be something to consider as well.

datalist··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
You meant the certificate? Sorry, my bad.
datalist··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
Switzerland is nice, but often overrated by expats ;)
datalist··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
Do you mean a residence card? That does not seem to be applicable to EU citizens (at least at the moment).
datalist··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
I admit, I am not familiar with all the details, but I as far as I know an exit should not affect the residency of foreigners already living there.

As for the economy, I'd wait and evaluate how things are going.

Have you considered Vienna as well?

datalist··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
I'd say it is past negotiations. The referendum probably puts them actually now in the weaker position. If people opt for the EU, Brussels could easily ignore any claims for further privileges, after all the EU has been officially backed by the British people.

And if people opt for leaving, well, then the decision is clear anyhow.

As for the vote next week, I have no idea what to expect. At the last debate Cameron-vs-Farage, I did have the feeling that Cameron was slightly nervous - but that was just a subjective impression.

datalist··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
What are the reasons you'd be considering this?

Any particular cities you'd consider?

datalist··on Ask HN: Tabs or Spaces?
Mixing styles will always lead to a mess though, regardless of whether one uses tabs and then someone "introduces" spaces or vice versa. Using spaces wont help much in that case.
datalist··on Ask HN: Tabs or Spaces?
A downvote for agreeing with someone, seriously?
datalist··on Ask HN: Tabs or Spaces?
I second what WayneBro wrote.
datalist··on Ask HN: Tabs or Spaces?
Can you elaborate on what problems you encountered with tabs in a Unicode context?
datalist··on Ask HN: Tabs or Spaces?
Tabs.

I used to prefer spaces until I came across an argument which convinced me to convert:

Indentation can be something very subjective, some prefer two spaces, others four and yet again others maybe eight. With spaces everyone is forced to use one particular style. With tabs everybody can configure it exactly the way they want and it will be displayed in one unified style.

datalist··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
Sorry, that statement is too little to justify the tarring and feathering mentality prevailing in this thread.

If there was a seriously inappropriate conduct then that should be certainly dealt with (harassing colleagues is not acceptable - whether they are male or female), but so far only the "MILF" statement leaves a bad taste.

Also, all digital evidence can be more or less easily faked. I am not saying that this DID happen in this case, I am saying it could have.

The downvoting and lynch mob attitude people exhibit here in this thread is rather worrying.

datalist··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
As if "positive" discrimation was ever useful or not just another form of discrimiation.
datalist··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
That is her side of the story, which does not have be necessarily true.
datalist··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
Though were "crude work-inappropriate remarks" the case here?

We here know too little to really make educated statements.

datalist··on Edward Snowden: ‘Governments can reduce our dignity to that of tagged animals’
I do not like such comparisons, as it (like animals) leaves the impression that such actions are just fine with anybody besides humans.
