dataker··on Telegram gains 1M users after Whatsapp ban
Interestingly, Fitch downgraded Brazil's Debt to junk yesterday.

Anti-technology culture tells a lot about an economy, group or nation.

Funny parallel with this thread from yesterday:

Despite what the 'Valley evangelists' will say(e.g., Thiel, Andreessen,...), innovation can happen anywhere in the world.

dataker··on Large Companies Game H-1B Visa Program
Honestly, this is a sad thread, showing many US ideological biases in presumedly intelligent people.

Many pseudo-libertarians want to use central-planning to determine wages(!) of foreigners while criticizing the minimum wage.

dataker··on Large Companies Game H-1B Visa Program
Because the total equity+salary package might have a future value that is much greater than say $200k.

Plus, the question really is 'why not?'. Access to H-1Bs could foster early growth in startups and, in the long-term, increase employment.

dataker··on Large Companies Game H-1B Visa Program
That would only benefit companies like IBM, Microsoft, etc.

Startups wouldn't be able to afford such high salaries (many rely on equity or even founding engineers).

Software engineers that work in startups are different from the corporate ones.

dataker··on TPP banning requirements to transfer or access to source code of software
This shows how the TPP could've been something great.

Sure, TPP uses the power of governments to impose interest of certain corporations.

In the other hand, TPP gradually weakens national governments by limiting their power over the individual.

Had it been restricted to providing economic cooperation and freedom between countries, it would have been amazing.

dataker··on TPP banning requirements to transfer or access to source code of software
>Showing source code to anybody (government or end user) does not make you loose your rights to that source code or the compiled application.

You lose control over your own property. That's enough. Similar to police officers entering your home without a warrant.

dataker··on Novelist warns against utilitarian trends in higher education
A degree usually won't "diminish" you chances, but you spend a lot of time studying.

One of the most beautiful concepts in Finance is Future Value: 1$ a year from now doesn't have the same as value as it does right now.

dataker··on Novelist warns against utilitarian trends in higher education
It's really easy to be agains't utilitarian trends in higher education when:

1) your parents have money

2) you are lucky/skilled enough to make a living off a Humanities degree

Most people are not like that and a Humanities degree is a terrible choice.

There's no self-discovery when your own survival is at stake.

His comment doesn't represent someone 'highly technical, unable to get out of their technical bias'.

In fact, a 'sales guy' or a banker could have shared a similar opinion.

You don't need to be 'highly technical' to be pragmatic and critical.

dataker··on Government officials in Amherst, VA can now require employers to fire ex-cons
I don't what dimension of left-right you have, but no one that supports individual freedom would fundamentally support the idea that a government can take your business away if you hire a specific person. It's not the individual employer that chooses it, but a tyrannical force.

On the left, while supporting equal opportunities, there'd be simply no reason to support outcasting individuals, especially when many ex-cons were raised in poverty and are URM. You don't have to be like SFiscans(tax breaks for employers that hire ex-cons) to be against this.

dataker··on Government officials in Amherst, VA can now require employers to fire ex-cons
Why would anyone support this?

If you're in the left and believe in equality, it's disgusting.

If you're in the right an believe in freedom, it's disgusting.

dataker··on Printing Money Goes Haywire in Venezuela
'Terrible planning' ends up being 'too much planning'.

In the end, Venezuelans were certainly trying to 'have the right plan' and 'build a better Venezuela', but because of the complexity of the economy, they were not able to grasp the tiny details and failed on their mission.

dataker··on Printing Money Goes Haywire in Venezuela
History has proven how destructive central planning and government intervention is.

Yet, most would find such claim to be debatable or even unacceptable.

dataker··on Wikipedia is blacklisted in Russia
I do find this to be disgusting, but I'd like to point out Wikipedia articles have become quite biased in the past years.

If content was based on purely factual information and opinions were contrasted/highlighted, Russia would have a much harder time finding a suitable argument.

dataker··on Stocks Off Sharply as Market Upheaval Grows
QE is 'over'(for now), but it has shaped today's economy. There may have QE4.

Artificially low interest rates is the main cause of most malinvestment and inflating assets. Usually ends with a pretty rough recession.

For debt, I could just say 'Greece/Argentina/Brazil/Japan/...', but(yes) these aren't the world's reserve currency. U.S could just pay its debt to China by 'printing money'

Still, it also severely hurt Americans and is probably the main problem for the middle class. Wages don't keep up with inflation and assets are inflated, so their purchasing power is smaller and citizens usually get indebted themselves.

dataker··on Stocks Off Sharply as Market Upheaval Grows
Regardless of your ideological background, you cannot possibly assert the U.S economy is healthy.

0% interest rate for several years is not healthy.

QE is not healthy.

100+ % debt:GDP ration is not healthy.

Inflating assets is not healthy.

A vanishing middle-class is not healthy.
