Uber did attend the career fair for the CSE department however to recruit software engineers.
Turns out they were there to recruit drivers to drive for Uber.
Nowadays it seems more and more common that this phrase is "Too many smart people go into working on ad optimization".
In my mind I see more data scientists being ignored or turned into “yes men”(https://www.interviewquery.com/blog-do-they-want-a-data-scie...)
I write about stuff you would find very boring. Do not read it.
Think podcasts, long-form testimonials, what it's about, etc...
Doesn't that demonstrate that the actual business case of producers discovering new artists doesn't even factor into the model's case of discovering which new songs will actually be hits.
It seems like the former is much harder than the latter in this case.
If I'm given this clean dataset with all of the features properly set in columns and data types labeled, I could spin up Azure or Google Cloud's ML capabilities and have them run gridsearch and optimize my model.
To test data scientists, it seems like it's generally falling more into the buckets of people that can pull analytics and query databases to create the datasets and features OR people that can build the infrastructure to serve models, engineer pipelines, etc...
FYI though we're working on this now at https://www.interviewquery.com to try to start creating suitable tests to assess data scientists without having them do 10+ take homes every month.
But IMO the field is getting to a point where the engineers are going into machine learning because it's a pay bump and the data analysts are realizing they can start calling themselves data scientists with some more experience under their belt.
Ultimately the field is saturating to where people are now going into this field as an easy way to hit six figures. You see that with the rise of the data science bootcamps but I digress as I wrote more about it here: https://www.interviewquery.com/blog/the-saturation-of-data-s...
