darthrupert··on Ask HN: How are parents who program teaching their kids today?
Don't teach your kids programming. Answer their questions when they have them, stop them when they're doing something obviously stupid (like too many hours on the computer, staying up too late, punching/yelling at the computer, that sorta stuff), but do not actively participate. Let them have their fun. Above all, do not get them a personal computer that is located in their own room.

In other words, be a parent, not a friend or, even worse, a colleague.

darthrupert··on EXT4 for Linux 6.16 Brings a Change Yielding "Stupendous Performance"
I'll hold out for ludicrous performance.
darthrupert··on Intel versus AMD is currently an emotional decision for me
I braved out and got the latest x1 carbon, and I've been rather happy. Battery life with latest kernels is quite ok (although obviously not macbook level) and nearly everything seems to work quite nicely.

Only weird part is the slow throttle up that happens after sleep. Seems like the machine is at 400MHz for half a minute before actually waking up.

darthrupert··on Flattening Rust’s learning curve
Yes, python has strong typing and in that sense passes this bar. It's a fine choice for many things, and if you enforce certain things in CI, it can be a good choice for many more.
darthrupert··on Telegram's Extraordinary Business Model

Haphazard reporting work or malicious lying from Telegram's side?

darthrupert··on Flattening Rust’s learning curve
On the other side where this question is not asked we have things like

    > "1" + 2
    3
And it's utter madness that everyone does anything important with languages like that.
darthrupert··on Pyrefly - A faster Python type checker written in Rust
The worst of both worlds is colleagues who insert type annotations but they're wrong. And there's no CI pipe to verify the types before check-in.

Working with these things makes me often think that people who want to write high quality software should just use a better language. But, well, real world is real.

darthrupert··on Pyrefly - A faster Python type checker written in Rust
Don't blame the tool for your shoddy work. Either accept your mediocre quality or do something to fix it.
darthrupert··on Indian court orders blocking of Proton Mail
Typically it's amazingly great evidence for the high quality of a mail service that certain governments hate them.
darthrupert··on No alternative but to disband Hong Kong's Democratic Party, leader says
Bit of a Game of Thrones situation when going against tyrants: you win or you die (in some sense).
darthrupert··on Marijuana hospital visits linked to dementia diagnosis within 5 years – a study
Unless the people who are "tipsy" from weed tell it to you, you will never be able to detect it.
darthrupert··on 4Chan was hacked and has been down for 4 days
I was on your level 10 years ago. It has become obvious recently that humanity cannot handle it.

Now, I need very good evidence that it's a good idea before I support the kind of free speech that destroys civilized society from within.

Perhaps it's supremely ironic that americans will have actual need for anonymity in online spaces now. And not for posting dumb memes, but for doing the things to tyrants that their Founding Fathers kept talking about.

darthrupert··on A new form of verification on Bluesky
Ultra-woke Twitter? What the hell are you blathering about?
darthrupert··on SteamNix OS
What are Fitgirl repacks? Looks like straight up piracy, but I'm guessing you could not advertise them on Github if they were.
darthrupert··on Tesla delays new 'affordable EV/stripped down Model Y' in the US
>Musk has believed that Tesla is on the verge of solving self-driving technology for the last few years

It's nowhere even close to solving it, and it's also no longer even the best at trying.

Elon Musk is a pathological liar.

darthrupert··on Canadian government freezes bank account of People's Party of Canada candidate
This is how a 1st world country is supposed to work when confronted with a fascist.
darthrupert··on RFK Jr pledges to find the cause of autism by September
The reason is known already: diagnosis got better. I'd welcome more knowledge if the endeavour wouldn't be by a known charlatan.
darthrupert··on Show HN: Real-time AI analysis of Trump's posts on financial markets within 30s
Good idea, and one that probably is already used by some financial institutions in some form or other.

I'm not sure about the ethics of forcing an LLM to digest that junk.

darthrupert··on Experimental release of GrapheneOS for Pixel 9a
Nfc card payments have a pretty low max limit at least without a pin.

Phone nfc payments do not.

darthrupert··on Whenever – typed and DST-safe datetimes for Python
Looks amazing. I had to deal with time handling in my very first programming job 25 years ago, and lousy handling has been a pet peeve of mine ever since.
darthrupert··on Experimental release of GrapheneOS for Pixel 9a
https://privsec.dev/posts/android/banking-applications-compa...

Many seem to work, if you apply some tweaks. Google Wallet NFC payments totally don't, I believe.

darthrupert··on Why Your 'Harmonious' Team Is Failing
Once I was in a team that had built for themselves a bubble of happiness, because the CTO / second founder of the company was a toxic scumbag. At the time I thought it was the best team ever but the bubble was cracked in a very ugly way, revealing the horrific situation.
darthrupert··on Ask HN: Should I smuggle components from Shenzhen to California ?
You might be underestimating both China's and US's capability to link this message to your itinerary. Perhaps don't plan crimes on a public message board.

Perhaps relocate to a country that is not attempting a global trade collapse and fascism. That is still legal for you. It might not be in the future.

darthrupert··on How many supernova explode every year?
The whole things seems like such a massive living system that I cannot help guessing that what we think of as universe is just a somewhat large single creature.
darthrupert··on Mastodon Exit Interview
Yeah. RIP email, too bad you never worked.
darthrupert··on Mastodon Exit Interview
Trusting a social network with your DMs is a massive delusion.
darthrupert··on How a $2k 'Made in the USA' Phone Is Manufactured
Good question, I honestly don't know anymore. Some manifestation of soft power that vanished into the air?
darthrupert··on Tech CEO: 4-day work week didn't hurt or help productivity
Yes, that's exactly the wrong perspective to take. The right one is that you shouldn't try to squeeze the last bits from a lemon. The only get is bitterness.
darthrupert··on Tech CEO: 4-day work week didn't hurt or help productivity
Not merely my opinion, rather my interpretation of the results in the article.

This is an opinion: everyone who tries to squeeze more out of their knowledge workers is a moron and/or malevolent and should be demoted or fired.

darthrupert··on How a $2k 'Made in the USA' Phone Is Manufactured
A year ago I would've been ready and willing to pay double price for a fully US-made phone. Purism's liberty phone seemed interesting.

Now, I will not buy american products at any price. It feels totally ridiculous now to even talk about moving the supply chain to the US.
