darrenkopp··on Dropbox confirms that a bug within Selective Sync may have caused data loss
Interesting. I know a few times I've had to kill the dropbox process while changing my selective sync settings before.
darrenkopp··on Dropbox confirms that a bug within Selective Sync may have caused data loss
I aggressively use selective sync, and have since as long as I can remember yet I haven't got an email like this, so it may only affect specific users.
darrenkopp··on Beautiful web type – typefaces from the Google web fonts directory
or run the new 64-bit chrome. I could never get the DirectWrite flag to work for me. Finally I got things working via registry changes, but I undid them and installed the new 64-bit beta and it's been amazing.
darrenkopp··on The SSL Co-operative: A Member-Controlled Certification Authority
I'm failing to see how this differs from http://www.cacert.org/, though perhaps this would be more strict on participation?
darrenkopp··on Twitter stops using Helevetica Neue in favour of Gotham
what browser are you using? looks great to me on firefox. chrome butchers fonts though.
darrenkopp··on F.C.C., in ‘Net Neutrality’ Turnaround, Plans to Allow Fast Lane
So, for HBO including their Go product with their subscription to everyone, I should stick it to HBO by for renting everything because Comcast is tacking on an additional fee (forcing me to upgrade my internet to higher tier)?
darrenkopp··on F.C.C., in ‘Net Neutrality’ Turnaround, Plans to Allow Fast Lane
Signed up for yesterday, had to pay $5 comcast tax for HBO go (HBO = $15, them "letting" me use HBO go - $5).

This system is bull shit.

darrenkopp··on Show HN: InstaMotor – Taking the pain out of selling your car
"We charge <5% of your vehicles sales price" "Simple 5% commission."

As an engineer, that really bothers me.

darrenkopp··on Microsoft Will Soon Bring Back The Start Menu In Windows 8.1
After using Windows 8 since release, I kind of prefer the current start menu to the old school one, but I guess I'm in the minority.
darrenkopp··on Google I/O 2014
Same for Firefox on Windows
darrenkopp··on Follow-up on 4K displays for programmers
I actually run mine at 1920 x 1080 @ 2x so that everything is super crisp. I have a retina macbook and it was just painful looking at my other monitors.
darrenkopp··on Follow-up on 4K displays for programmers
I haven't tried the 28" monitor because it suffers from the 30hz problem as well, so instead I got the 24" Ultrasharp (~$200 more on amazon) and it's amazing. It supports DisplayPort 1.2 so it can do 60hz. It supports HDMI as well, but not the newer version so you are limited to 30hz if you want to use HDMI.

darrenkopp··on Amazon Accused of Cheating Customers Through Shipping Costs
Ugh, I hate lawsuits. Amazon often clearly states under the price "Note: This item may be available at a lower price from other sellers that are not eligible for Amazon Prime."
darrenkopp··on Scenes from a militarized America
It was less than $2 USD.
darrenkopp··on Announcing Stack Overflow in Portuguese
It definitely is, I don't think the person who said it was really covering all the subtleties of the statement, they were just answering my question to them as to why they chose Portuguese to be the first localized stackoverflow site.
darrenkopp··on Announcing Stack Overflow in Portuguese
When I was interviewing with Stack Exchange, one of the employees there made this off-hand comment (not direct quote, but probably close): "Brazil is seeing a lot of out sourcing work with high quality output but for whatever reason they just don't seem that interested in learning English, so we are localizing the site"
darrenkopp··on Feedly Found a New Way to Steal Page Views From Publishers
I've been using Digg Reader since the last time news broke about Feedly doing junk like this and I have really liked it. The only thing I dislike is that something steals focus away when navigating via j / k, so for long articles you have to click into the article pane to then use up / down arrows to scroll. It also seems to refresh feeds a little slower than feedly / google reader, but that's pretty minor.

Other than those two small issues, Digg Reader is fantastic.

darrenkopp··on My Amazon interview experience
When I interviewed with amazon they let me know their decision within two days.
darrenkopp··on Anatomy of a cheap USB-to-Ethernet adapter
Fantastic, I'm in the market for a USB gigabit ethernet adapter as the thunderbolt one from Apple (and all other thunderbolt adapters it would seem) disable the sleep on windows. I found this on Amazon in the US under the brand "Unitek."

darrenkopp··on Apple fined for price fixing
Sweet, Apple will make that amount of money in ~146 seconds. That will certainly show them.
darrenkopp··on Spotify's mobile app finally goes free
I just wish google music had a desktop client (or support in chrome) to hook into operating system keyboard shortcuts like play, pause, forward, next, etc.
darrenkopp··on Do not use Amazon chat support. This just happened to me.
Every time I've used Amazon chat support I've had a great experience. I'm pretty sure everyone has had one bad support experience with a company regardless of whether it was chat, phone, or in-person.
darrenkopp··on Our biggest gripes with OS X Mavericks
What happens when you press the power button is configurable in windows, and I would guess that by default it shuts down on a desktop and sleeps on a laptop.

The problem here is that Apple put the power button above the delete button and you end up sleeping your computer very often just because you miss the delete key.

darrenkopp··on Ask HN: What kind of side projects are you working on?
SassyStudio, provides much needed support for SCSS in Visual Studio.

https://github.com/darrenkopp/sassystudio

Currently it supports compiling css (via libsass), syntax highlighting, outlining, and intellisense.

darrenkopp··on Motorola Makes The Moto G Official, A “Premium” Phone Starting At $179 Unlocked
This is great, I was ready to buy a MotoX until I saw it was $750 unlocked, when at the same time the Nexus 4 was only $350. I'm not surprised that they didn't sell that many of them.
darrenkopp··on Comcast announces placing data caps
I would say that I am probably about average in my consumption, and according to my router last month i did 217GB down and 22GB up. So I would say they are probably about right, not that I agree with what they are doing. My primary download usage is netflix / hulu plus, and primary upload usage is backblaze.
darrenkopp··on Tesla: Third Model S fire in past two months

darrenkopp··on Upcoming Nexus 5 leaks in white, Nov. 1 launch date reported
Yup, I'm sick of my galaxy nexus lagging in updates, so I'm switching to T-Mobile.
darrenkopp··on Visual Studio 2013 released to web
How many projects does chromium have? I typically work in a solution w/ about 175 projects and it only takes about 10 seconds to load up for me on 2012.
darrenkopp··on Windows 8.1 now available
I do. It's fantastic. I also have 8.1 on my work computer which is AD, but you can link your microsoft account to that account as well which allows all preferences to sync.
