darkwraithcov··on Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’
We get it, you’re a fan.
darkwraithcov··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
He just did autocrats a huge solid.
darkwraithcov··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
Its a testament to how well designed and implemented the code base is, if the wheels havent started falling off yet (shockingly). I know we’re all supposed to shit on Twitter, but they had world class engineers working there before the mass layoffs and brain drain.
darkwraithcov··on Barbary Lion
Lions were once in Europe and Asia, which is why you see so many depictions of Lions in the ancient cultures of places that seem quite disconnected from Africa. So many European coat of arms for example have powerful lions drawn on them, because they actually lived in the countryside of those locations.

Imagine being in the Spanish countryside, and encountering a pride of lions.

AI upscaling with diffusion models will probably solve that problem.

Github pages is excellent and should be the dev’s go to of choice IMO.
darkwraithcov··on Animals Are Dying in Droves. What Are They Telling Us?
I was trying to be conservative, but given the rate of coral bleaching and mass die offs happening on the world's coral reefs, I'm afraid you might be right.
darkwraithcov··on Animals Are Dying in Droves. What Are They Telling Us?
There’s a mass extinction happening and no one seems to care. We may see a complete collapse of the ecosystem in the next 30 years.
darkwraithcov··on Laid-off tech workers choose stability over status
A lot of people live paycheck to paycheck, even middle income earners.
darkwraithcov··on The Twitter API is now effectively unmaintained
Capitalism is a farce and a complete house of cards. Remember when we realized during the pandemic that the most important people in society were grocery store clerks and gas station attendants? We learned nothing from that. Broken system.
darkwraithcov··on Microsoft Researchers Claim GPT-4 Is Showing “Sparks” of AGI
Yes because natural language is just one way humans have adapted to sensory input.
darkwraithcov··on Microsoft Researchers Claim GPT-4 Is Showing “Sparks” of AGI
The problem is, because of how these models were trained, how do we know if its telling us how it feels vs how it thinks we want it to respond?
darkwraithcov··on Microsoft Researchers Claim GPT-4 Is Showing “Sparks” of AGI
This is a stochastic puppet telling the prompter what it thinks they want to hear, which in and of itself is already dangerous because humans didn’t evolve along side machine intelligence. If even that famous Google guy was fooled, we’re in deep shit. That guy is an expert in his field working for one of the toughest companies to interview for in a position that requires significant dedication and scholastic achievement to attain, and he was fooled by statistical text prediction.
darkwraithcov··on Microsoft Researchers Claim GPT-4 Is Showing “Sparks” of AGI
Consciousness and intelligence are not necessarily the same things, the former is difficult to define.

Not exactly the most scientific research paper when no one outside of MSFT and Open Ai knows what’s in the black box.
darkwraithcov··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or could file conversion websites be a honeypot?
The good ones calculate pw Strength client-side, so there is nothing to worry about there. Problem, most people don’t know what the good ones are nor how to find them.

Bit warden has a good pw entropy checker.

darkwraithcov··on Microsoft Puts Caps on Bing Usage After AI Chatbot Offered Unhinged Responses
Too many humans are too easily influenced by AI. The fact that so many people legit believe it has "feelings" and they are reacting themselves with "feelings" is a bad sign of things to come. I am forseeing a world of cargo cult-like devotion to algorithms and AI because they tell them what they want to hear, and social media has primed the pump in this regard.

darkwraithcov··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
If its anything like the cold war where we did this with the Russkies (and prior to that, The Nazis) it makes sense to me it would have significant electronic warfare value.
darkwraithcov··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
USAmerican is what I use to make it clear I don’t mean Canada or Mexico or Latin America. Some people don’t like it, because they think it’s unnecessary as most people assume you mean the USA, others don’t like it because they think the US is the center of everything so how dare you attempt to be inclusive of other non US American countries.
darkwraithcov··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
This is what Israelis were saying about Iraq. It may be true, but also not a compelling reason for war or escalating tension.
darkwraithcov··on ChatGPT Is Dumber Than You Think
I'm envisioning partisan bots just arguing with each other ad nauseam. It will be interesting to say the least.
darkwraithcov··on ChatGPT: The Slickest Con Artist of All Time
I’m envisioning a bifurcation of reality where some people live in an entirely fact based world (or as close an approximation to fact based as a human can objectively reach, aka the observable, knowable universe) and some live in a complete fabrication, a fantasy version carefully crafted by AIs. Now add Augmented Reality to the mix, and it’s a dystopian nightmare.

And I don’t think the US political left will be immune to it as much as they may think. While I agree that older Americans on the right are highly susceptible to misinformation, and media literacy is dismal among that demographic, younger people are also prone to it. Just look at all the unhinged utter nonsense that is wildly popular on TikTok.

The ability of ML models to authoritatively spout bullshit will make gish gallops worse than they are now. It will also make echo chambers even worse, as digital alternate realities will further divide people. I mean, who wants to engage with those who completely rejects that the sky is objectively blue, or that 2 + 2 = 4? Well now they’ll have articulate, authoritative responses with works cited explaining why the sky is red, actually.

Who needs Big Brother when people choose the method of their own subjugation eagerly and with dessert?

darkwraithcov··on ChatGPT Is Dumber Than You Think
What I really worry about is uninformed Dunning-Krugerites using it to sound more articulate and intelligent than they actually are to disseminate more BS than we already contend with online. Online debate is folly to begin with, now let’s throw gasoline on the fire.
darkwraithcov··on The unequal treatment of demographic groups by ChatGPT/OpenAI content moderation
It makes sense if you are an informed, educated person, that organized religion isn't a palatable thing. But neither is our society's obsession with money, and I'd argue many of the problems we have with religions come down to how money and power is wielded, not a few sentences in a very old book. I also find a lot of what conservative christian evangelicals believe to be indistinguishable from wahhabist islam. They seem to hate each other for reasons other than what they actually believe.
darkwraithcov··on The unequal treatment of demographic groups by ChatGPT/OpenAI content moderation
I mean, you can distort/twist an ostensibly peaceful religion like Christianity into something insidious and outright evil. A lot of atrocities have been committed by devout and pious leaders who claimed to follow a deity/prophet with a peaceful/loving message, so it's unsurprising that it's still a feature of modern religions.

There was a point in time where the Islamic world was a world leader in math, science, and technology. Of course, like with anything, time and money corrupts all things. Oil especially taints everything it touches.

darkwraithcov··on The unequal treatment of demographic groups by ChatGPT/OpenAI content moderation
The "left," is a truly nebulous concept if you observe leftist discourse online, where circular firing squads are writ large.

I think you are conflating the left's support for minority groups who are demonized and targeted by society for support of the tenets of their respective religions. After 9/11, Muslims were a significant target of hatred and violence. The left, which again is not a monolithic entity, doesn't support islam anymore than it supports judaism or any other religion, it supports people who happen to follow that religion. It's based around humanist tendencies, which the right often doesn't understand. You can hate aspects of a religion while also being against any dehumanization and hatred against people who follow said religion.

Like the other 2 major Abrahamic religions, Islam has some good and some bad tenets. At least in the US, there are some extremely conservative muslims and some - perhaps shockingly - liberal muslims. Being that they are such a small percentage of the US population, there is a lot of misunderstanding and stereotyping of people who follow Islam.

darkwraithcov··on Play Counter Strike 1.6, with full multiplayer, in the browser
I remember creating a map of my high school in the Build engine for duke3d.exe matches. This was before Columbine, but every outsider, nerd kid had fantasized in a similar way.

We got our aggressions out on deathmatch, but it never occurred to us in a million years to actually hurt people IRL. We hated the jocks and the preps with the burning passion of a billion Wolf-Rayet stars, but never thought to hurt any of them, we simply accepted our lot in the genetic and social lottery and hoped to get revenge later in life (so far so good, judging by facebook).
