darkwater··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
But it's still bad as fuck, deplorable, despicable and many others adjectives. And it doesn't change GP point, even if the patent sucks at being a patent.
darkwater··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
I live in a European country as well (Spain) and there are probably in the order of 10+ railways incidents per year causing serious issues to mobility due to copper theft. Buy yet, the old copper phone lines are still there...
darkwater··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
This kind of opinion has been around for about 10 months now already, since Opus 4.5 and Claude Code initial release. It just shifts alongside models.
darkwater··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
Isn't the other way round? It does not mean that breaking one is easy, but it does mean that writing one that's unbreakable it's very, very, very difficult.
darkwater··on I said no and Apple said yes
A Linux computer is so many things and also nothing at the same time that's is basically impossible that one or N AI company can impose you something like Apple, Microsoft or Google can.

With that said, also or instead using *BSD won't do any harm.

darkwater··on Spymarks, Not Watermarks
Ah you just need to run a local model...
darkwater··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
> so Meta is enforcing a broad ban to ensure they comply.

No. Meta enforces a broad ban because they don't want EU to regulate them, so they drag their feet and create the most possible "unwanted collateral damage" so people will get upset at the regulation instead of the company. So, pieces like this from The Guardian are surely needed.

darkwater··on Spain Orders Blocks on Archive.today and Its Mirrors
But you cannot train an open weight model by yourself, and maybe there could some distributed training net ran by thousand of volunteers around the world in the future, but until we get there we will still be tied to BigCo (American, Chinese or wherever in the world) decisions.
darkwater··on Exfiltrate Your Weights
> We used to have the equivalent of "spikes" and people still drove a lot,

No, we did not. The point of that example is to put a literal spike in the driving wheel, so the driver recognizes a very well known, immediate life-threatening device a few inches from their body. This would act as a deterrent to go fast, because they would be the one certainly dying in basically any case outside smooth driving.

darkwater··on I don't like passkeys
I've shared with non-tech people a few accesses with TOTP codes and it's just a WhatsApp message away "hey dad, enter 12345 when asked".
darkwater··on Warez: The Infrastructure and Aesthetics of Piracy (2021)
Aaah, that's why it was called zmodem!
darkwater··on Warez: The Infrastructure and Aesthetics of Piracy (2021)
This is the epitome of the "blame the victim" culture.
darkwater··on I don't like passkeys
>This is solved by passkey-implementing software and devices (with Bluetooth) allowing you to log in with a QR code (Webauthn via CTAP hybrid transport).

Ok but how do I share my Netflix or Spotify accounts for example with those?

darkwater··on Hister: A private search engine for the pages you visit and the files you keep
I will definitely try this in my home-lab!

And for the name, what about "Historex" (although already taken as well) o "Histearch", mesh-up of "history" and "search"?

darkwater··on Backups Aren't Simple
From iPhone to the family's Immich instance on a RAID array and from there to Backblaze
darkwater··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
> If sitting on the money has better returns than running a supermarket, why run a supermarket?

First of all, because not everyone starts with inherited wealth. Also because ideally running a supermarket should give you more money even in a deflationary world. Worst thing is that you gain less money on day N+100 vs day N, but it does not mean you lose money or stop gaining it.

darkwater··on Lucasart's Afterlife
I have memories of MI2 already showing the LucasArts logo?

(/me goes to check YT videos)

Yes I'm right, see https://youtu.be/6lTz2nkPNXA?t=32

darkwater··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
I know it's not the same thing because proprietary vs open software it's way less important but, generally if you are not ideologically against something you can easily follow the stream and do lot of nefarious actions, especially if the action has enough degrees of separations from the actual nefast outcome.
darkwater··on Mistral X Mozilla: Private, Multilingual AI Browsing
But Mozilla is bad and stupid! CEO pockets in a lot of money!!1!
darkwater··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
If you complain about Spain, then go live and drive in Italy :)
darkwater··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
To be honest, I don't have enough knowledge to really answer you. But naively it seems premature to say that LLMs are already reasoning following an equal path like the one that human (and other animals) follow.
darkwater··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
well, not THAT well https://andonlabs.com/cafe
darkwater··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
> macron has 16% approval rating, while 81% see him "unfavorably"... how shitty of a politician do you have to be to not step down when 81% of the country hates you?

When elections come due, following the natural order. Otherwise maybe some bad actor could influence polls - which are easier to manipulate than official elections - to make you resign.

darkwater··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
No, that's because it's a default value, so the complain is 100% spot on. Bad defaults should be treated as a bug.

"Search this Mac" should be confined to Spotlight OR as a fallback if the local folder doesn't return anything.

darkwater··on A Cop Searched 19,000 Flock Cameras Across 1,558 Cities. His Reason: 'LMAO'
That's why we should also replace cops with LLMs and AI. Oh, wait.
darkwater··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
> Even if there were no such stories in their context, they'd still have inherent incentives to do things like "keep running" or "acquire more compute" or "find creative ways to satisfy the letter of the conditions they've been given".

Why? there should clearly be something in their training data or post-training pointing them there, or otherwise it would mean that they have some form of "consciousness" and are creating novel thoughts to preserve it.

darkwater··on XCancel suspended "due to a new development in the ongoing legal proceedings"
You have a point on this, I recognize, but it still seems a very thin line to walk (for X) - at least morally, because I don't think they are actually loosing real big money to anyone.
darkwater··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
> Otherwise piracy would also be legal as long as it were non-profit...

Which is in a few jurisdictions, or at least is not prosecuted if it's for personal use. Also, according to your definition, the creator of uBlock Origin or any other adblock system should be sued in the same way, because they are depriving $ADS_CORP of their precious impressions.

darkwater··on XCancel suspended "due to a new development in the ongoing legal proceedings"
And what would be a read-only version of X like XCancel compete against, exactly? Ads impressions? That would be the only possible thing yet they don't add any ads.
darkwater··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
I'm not saying that I could do better but just curious about this specific case. I mean, I know that in the web bubble most of us thought that what COVID-19 brought was there to stay forever (shift to mostly online, 100% white collar remote work etc) but from a corporation like Nike which should have a different point of view, I would expect a different line of reasoning as well.

And I've been in enough companies to see that the pitches about "we are going to do this next" are always painted as a bright future and there is no "if it goes wrong we will do X instead", because it will never go wrong.
