darknavi··on After two years of vibecoding, I'm back to writing by hand
In middle school (I think) we spent a few days in math class hand-calculating trigonometry values (cosine, sin, etc.). Only after we did that did our teacher tell us that the mandated calculators that we all have used for the last few months have a magic button that will "solve" for the values for you. It definitely made me appreciate the calculator more!
darknavi··on Adoption of EVs tied to real-world reductions in air pollution: study
ICE cars also often leak all sorts of liquids onto roadways (and thus into our water ways).
darknavi··on No knives, only cook knives
I enjoy seeing glimpse into other people's niche hobbies.

I really enjoy markets like they describe and I've experienced them in Asia, but I have no idea where I'd find one in WA State.

darknavi··on HTTP RateLimit Headers
We also try to roll a Retry-Limit (max number of retries) header to prevent our clients from hurting our services too much if there are ongoing issues.

darknavi··on What a year of solar and batteries saved us in 2025
I had a old, cheap, used Dell R710 that I bought used in ~2016 until 2025. It only took a few months of running a new, much more efficient server to pay for its self.
darknavi··on Git Rebase for the Terrified
It's funny because I learned git on the job and we exclusively used rebase when I was learning my git fundamentals. I wouldn't say merging scares be, but it's never a tool a reach for.
darknavi··on Git Rebase for the Terrified
Is git reflog that bad to use? It just lists a bunch of commit hashes. Find the one you want and hard reset to it.
darknavi··on iCloud Photos Downloader
With Photosync I have our photos export to my NAS and have it update the file names with the timestamp + original file name, which makes it so much more sane to sort through.

Example:

darknavi··on The Napoleon Technique: Postponing things to increase productivity
It's definitely a balancing act.

I remember part of my new manager training at my company started with "Be a lazy manager". The idea being that you should help your directs build muscles to try to help them self first, and then ask for help.

darknavi··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
Indeed. I was in Sweden and learned that you can look up someone's address and pay on a government website. I think there are some "are you human" checks, but it's basically all in the clear.

It creeped me out a bit and then I was angry when I realized it's the same way in the US, but maybe worse. In the US this is possible too, you just have to pay private data brokers and a bunch of middle men make a cheap buck. Employers sell your pay data, websites sell your address. Everyone makes a buck at your expense.

darknavi··on Self hosting my media library with Jellyfin and Wireguard on Hetzner
Just shooting in the dark, but could you use rclone somehow?
darknavi··on Video Game Websites in the early 00s
I love that HBO still carries on even if Halo is a limping franchise.
darknavi··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
> What is the downside to using email?

Make sure you authenticate somehow to prevent external abuse.

darknavi··on State of the Fin 2026-01-06
I have a Plex lifetime subscription but hold no strict allegiance to the company.

If Jellyfin was a comparable product (in user experience and ease of use for my extended family's platforms) I'd switch tomorrow.

darknavi··on Clicks Communicator
I can't tell if you're serious but the company shipping this phone ships keyboard cases. They are hilariously sized.

darknavi··on Toll roads are spreading in America
Doesn't Sydney also have world class public transport infrastructure? Seems like a pretty decent trade to me.
darknavi··on Noclip.website – A digital museum of video game levels
> And the modern game industry is beyond saving at this point outside of a few independent studios.

I totally disagree. There are are a ton of fun indie games these days from all sorts of folks and studios.

Look beyond the billion or trillion dollar companies and there is still a ton of fun, new games coming out.

darknavi··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
Wow! I was using LightBurn this evening for some holiday presents. Hello from a very thankful MacOS user.

What's your laser setup? 80-100W CO2 laser?
darknavi··on Leaving the U.S. for the Netherlands
Depending on how much money you have, many countries would "love" to have you.

Although if you have that much money life in the US right now probably isn't personally on the extreme decline.

darknavi··on Apple's slow AI pace becomes a strength as market grows weary of spending
And the bar is pretty low isn't it?

Now days with "Apple Intelligence" enabled, half of a siri response is "I found this with ChatGPT, verify important information".

As far as user experience goes, it reminds me of those stupid warnings every time you start a car that basically says "drive safe!"

darknavi··on Microsoft has a problem: lack of demand for its AI products
> Copy/pasting from ChatGPT still works better.

Side tangent: Copy/pasting from the Windows Copilot app is absolute dogshit. It makes no sense that the simple action of "copy this text" is this broken.

darknavi··on United States Antarctic Program Field Manual (2024) [pdf]
Very fun insight, thanks for sharing your story!

I assume things like Starlink have made the station a lot less "boring", which might depreciate some of the "off-grid" novelty of being there.

darknavi··on United States Antarctic Program Field Manual (2024) [pdf]
I find it neat that even in a climate as hostile as the Antarctic humans still make an effort to recycle.

> Field Camp Hut Etiquette

> Sort and pack all trash and recycled materials and take them back to McMurdo Station for proper disposal.

darknavi··on Schizophrenia sufferer mistakes smart fridge ad for psychotic episode
I am now appreciating the spectrum of ad acceptance. I am closer to the "billboards shouldn't be allowed" end of the spectrum.

An ad sitting on a screen in my personal space sounds like a dystopian novel.

darknavi··on Schizophrenia sufferer mistakes smart fridge ad for psychotic episode
> hardly what I consider invasive

This is an ad in someone's kitchen in their home. How can it get more invasive?

darknavi··on Self-hosting my photos with Immich
One option is use immich just to browse photos. I back my photos up to various places, one of which is my NAS. You can set up immich to browse but not modify photos so you can still use it as a "front end".

darknavi··on Helldivers 2 devs slash install size from 154GB to 23GB
It's true for most of the modern web. Hardware and internet connections have come reliable and fast enough for many people not to care.

Unfortunately there are still people on metered/slow connections that really do care still.
