darknavi··on AI agent runs amok in Fedora and elsewhere
I personally find the barrier of starting new (FOSS) projects much lower now days.
darknavi··on EV Stupidity Checklist
The guy car-jacked a teenager and managed to hit ~7 cars by plowing through a red light.

He was clearly off his meds or something. Preaching about "people following him", that he "was a man of god", and that we needed to believe him.

The cops then dragged him off the car (as per one of the videos!).

darknavi··on C++: The Documentary
FASTBuild has been a game changer for our team recently if you have extra hardware sitting around.

darknavi··on Conventional Commits encourages focus on the wrong things
I agree, the default change logging using something like semantic-release would result in this, which feels way off:

# Bug Fixes

- foo bar'ing

darknavi··on The dead economy theory
> that keeps users in the platform

Alright but if it'd just let me open a damn web link without smashing the link four times just to open an in-app browser frame I'd really appreciate it.

darknavi··on WH proposes rules giving political appointees final approval on research grants
Beyond the environment
darknavi··on EV Stupidity Checklist
To each their own, I really enjoy my 2018 Model 3 glass roof. Although a stress fracture from no where would really annoy me.

For what its worth I've had a crazed man preach from on top of my Model 3 roof and it still looks brand new :)

darknavi··on GTA 6 Developers Unionize
> monopsony

I had to look it up as well. I assumed it was a play on words about Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony (the three big video game console players).

darknavi··on Bttf is a command line datetime Swiss army knife
So this is who I get to "blame" for LLMs constantly saying "I want to use `rg` but I see that it's not installed on this system...".
darknavi··on The real cost of owning a home
> House maintenance and projects have taken up most of every single weekend of mine for the past few years.

Mine come and go but it's no where near every weekend since I've purchased in 2019. What sort of things occupy this much time?

darknavi··on Nobody understands the point of hybrid cars [video]
I guess it depends on the EV. We one-shot Seattle to Portland because it's only ~180 miles. I can't imagine spending 2-3 hours charging on that trip.

We'll spend ~20-30 minutes charging on the way home but that's it.

Now if we're talking about the traffic in Tacoma or around JBLM that's a different story!

darknavi··on Nobody understands the point of hybrid cars [video]
Definitely different than raod tripping in an ICE. We road trip in our Model Y and end up stopping often regardless of charging for snacking, stretching, walking the dogs, etc.

I remember talking to a coworker would couldn't accept taking 10 hours to drive somewhere instead of the 8.5 hours you can make it in an ICE. But then again we are definitely people who puts on road trips.

darknavi··on Nobody understands the point of hybrid cars [video]
Cold soaked batteries are definitely less ideal but if you can plug in at home, planning your charge times and pre-conditioning the car while plugged in significantly reduces the range effects (and preheats the cabin for you!)
darknavi··on Kioxia and Dell cram 10 PB into slim 2RU server
Just waiting for the Gavin Belson edition box.
darknavi··on Inkscape 1.4.4
I normally change mine to `project.svg` but that's just my preference.
darknavi··on Inkscape 1.4.4
It allows the user to change the default from drawning.svg, but that is still the default out of the box.

https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/merge_requests/7801

darknavi··on Inkscape 1.4.4
I have my first contribution to Inkscape in this release I think. It's quite a minor feature though, so I don't see it in the changelog. It allows the user to set their default saved file name. I was tired of drawing.svg :)
darknavi··on Reverse-engineering the 1998 Ultima Online demo server
I love old MMO server reverse-engineering. MapleStory custom servers helped get me into programming in middle school/high school.

I still have an inkling to get back into MapleStory custom servers (or other MMOs) but to be honest something about the vast open world that is empty of players is really creepy/sad/liminal to me. I'd want to take a spin at adding some "life" to the servers, even if it is just extra player-ish NPCs.

darknavi··on Write some software, give it away for free
Fwiw I assume most people feel this way.

I am a 90s kid and I watch things like Stranger Things and feel nostalgia for a simpler time even though I wasn't even alive in the 80s.

darknavi··on It's official: Utah is the U.S. state closest to banning VPNs
> When Utah's Senate Bill 73 goes into force on May 6, websites subject to the state's age verification law will be legally barred from explaining how to use a VPN to get around age restrictions.

This will definitely work. It sounds like it's time for some "How not to use a VPN" articles.

darknavi··on Uber wants to turn its drivers into a sensor grid for self-driving companies
I was also picturing Uber drivers with a bundle of composite video cables in their hands.
darknavi··on Can I disable all data collection from my vehicle?
The same reason Windows only respects users choices in Europe, they make more money with the settings elsewhere in the world and will only change unless regulated.

> In the EEA, Windows will always use customers’ configured app default settings for link and file types, including industry standard browser link types (http, https).

darknavi··on Show HN: I've built a nice home server OS
I'm a novice in this space I think. I've self-hosted for over a decade and around 2019 I moved over to Unraid, which is generally pretty visual (web portal or configuring and doing maintenance). I find the web portal very easy. How does one interact with your home server OS? I assume it's all via terminal because there are no pictures on the website?
darknavi··on Incident with multple GitHub services
Similar here. Somewhat ironic that a tool that was supposed to be preventing merge conflicts was authoring completely mangled commits to our mainline branch.
darknavi··on Why Japan has such good railways
A great video on the zoning laws in Japan if anyone wants to nerd out on them

darknavi··on All 12 moonwalkers had "lunar hay fever" from dust smelling like gunpowder (2018)
If this fact piques your interest, the book Delta-v by Daniel Suarez glances off this fact and uses it to justify exploring asteroid mining instead of a colony on Mars.
darknavi··on Rare concert recordings are landing on the Internet Archive
I enjoyed "live albums" a lot growing up.

The Mark, Tom, and Travis show was always a blast to listen to with my friends.

darknavi··on BirdNET-Go – 24/7 realtime bird song analysis
If you use Merlin Bird ID and have an outdoor microphone (a camera with a RTSP stream will do!) this is a fun app to self-host.

I looked for something like this a few years ago and the only solution I could find for self-hosting was BirdNET-pi, which was dated even then.

Hope some birders find this fun, I am happy to have stumbled upon it this weekend.

darknavi··on Show HN: Pardonned.com – A searchable database of US Pardons
I meant it's probably intentional that the data being represented differently on the DOJ's website, not your tracker website.
darknavi··on Show HN: Pardonned.com – A searchable database of US Pardons
That's probably intentional on the DOJ's part at this point.
