darkmarmot··on Scalability is overrated
It's interesting because I work for a Fortune 100 at which most of the software challenges are related to scale (or sadly data quality...) A lot of vendor and startup systems that try to work with us fail because they simply can't handle the scale of a single enterprise customer.

Answer: 1

darkmarmot··on U.S. workers have gotten less productive – no one is sure why
I work in it too. And the US govt is not approving or even looking to approve new EHRs. The bureaucratic hurdles (and regulatory capture) are such that it is no longer feasible in this country. I would write one in a heartbeat if it wasn't a doomed venture.

Don't forget money laundering, human trafficking and drug sales! And destroying the environment through sheer waste is just the crypto cherry on top!
darkmarmot··on Celsius acknowledges $1.2B hole in balance sheet
You're right. You have to build them in secret like Cobra Command!
darkmarmot··on Microsoft researched what made employees happy
There are thousands of examples if you work for a paternalistic megacorp. Case in point, our office now lets people "hotel" at desks, but we have to reserve them for time slots. We could, like the library, just sit and use unoccupied desks. But they add this level of control that's geared towards toddlers that can't operate in a shared public space.
darkmarmot··on Why isn't the internet more fun and weird? (2019)
Honestly, the internet has seemed somewhat barren to me since the death of Flash.
darkmarmot··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
So awkward. I'm just over 6'2" -- and at a recent family reunion had to deal with everyone saying I must be at _least_ 6'4". Because I was much taller than the other 6' guys there... and if I dispute it too vociferously, it's almost an attack on all the guys around me who are lying about their height. It seems there's a 2 or 3 inch bump across the board.
darkmarmot··on Closure of 3M chip coolant plant could upset semiconductor sector
The problem is that it virtually never goes away, keeps building up in the environment, and results in ever greater levels of toxicity over time.
darkmarmot··on The Sixth Mass Extinction: fact, fiction or speculation?
When humans killed off most of the megafauna, it caused cascading extincations. Dire wolves went extinct with nothing to eat. The Osage orange tree nearly went extinct (down to one very small area); it's believed that were spread by Giant Ground Sloth droppings. Tons of dependent plants and animals likely vanished from our "natural" landscape without ever having been recorded.
darkmarmot··on Bird populations declining fast across North America
I suspect you might be suffering from "the hubris". We're quite well into the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction -- and it's only accelerating.
darkmarmot··on Top officers of a Navy nuclear sub have lost their jobs over undersea collision
I think obedience will end up being a huge negative in future wars if rapid tactical iteration driven by autonomous planes, robots and drones becomes common. The age of obsequious human meat shields is approaching its literal terminus.

Iain M. Banks is also a lot of fun.

darkmarmot··on Can Nuclear Fusion Put the Brakes on Climate Change?
I agree that we should be rolling out as many modern, small scale fission reactors as possible, right now, in order to deal with CO2 output. But, at the same time, I think we should pursue fusion with the same gusto that we currently direct towards blowing up 3rd world countries. Also, recent advances might herald fusion in less time than you'd think: https://news.mit.edu/2021/MIT-CFS-major-advance-toward-fusio....
darkmarmot··on Norway to hit 100% electric vehicle sales by early next year
Road wear is disproportionately caused by heavy vehicles; one study estimated that "one 18-wheeler is equivalent to the impact of 9,600 cars". The gas tax is primarily a subsidy designed to support the trucking industry.
darkmarmot··on Drones Raining from the Sky in Zhengzhou
In future warfare, I'm pretty sure these will be fully autonomous to avoid jamming and latency issues.
darkmarmot··on Can Nuclear Fusion Put the Brakes on Climate Change?
Well, nukes (which didn't exist then) sure put the brakes on Japan's military.
darkmarmot··on Statement from Mark Zuckerberg
So, anecdotally, the most amoral programmers that I've ever worked with have ended up at Facebook. I'm sure there are decent people there, but I couldn't personally work there in good conscience.

This was an OS that did not support hard real-time GC.
darkmarmot··on The NSA and CIA use ad blockers
I once criticized one of Reddit's advertisers (AMC) in a sponsored comment post (they no longer allow comments on these).

Reddit shadowbanned my account sitewide. That's enough reason for me to never, ever view Reddit without an adblock.

darkmarmot··on Video of Tesla FSD almost hitting pedestrian receives DMCA takedown
I recently avoided a startup prospect because they were looking to build a car OS that wasn't hard real-time. The very idea that they're trying to develop such things that might intermittently pause to do some garbage collection is freaking terrifying.

darkmarmot··on Coronavirus: Hard-hit Brazil removes data amid rising death toll
It's actually easier to hide dead people than living people because you don't have to feed them.
