I'd gladly set fire to parents to demonstrate to them what hell is like.

Why do parents assume kids want to be bought into todays toxic world?

Thing is it wouldnt be fair to single my parents out, the unkillable ideas that govern, like govt, law, medicine, religion and royalty also deserve a demonstration!

Its interesting living in a house where 2 of the 3 males have died. Is it an Omen? Is it an example of getting the 3rd degree? Time will tell....

darkclouds··on Ask HN: Small Developer Attempting to Verifying Large Corp Stats
You cant verify the stats because like in politics, the question is part of the charade. An example of what I mean is carrying out a survey in a poor part of a country, or during the middle of the night outside a hospital or night club. So many entities have their special relationships with their pollsters, and the pollsters are excellent at identifying the best ways to manipulate a survey.

And with the ease at which to produce an app, especially with ChatGPT (if the hype is to be believed), are people just competing against the app stores own developers, to rinse them of their very last drop of income?

Its not like anyone can check each and ever app in the appstore is it?

>So how do people who are not major publishers actually figure out whether Google is unfairly hiding your app?

I used to spend money on adwords when it first came out and I couldnt verify any of the people who clicked the links, and nothing was converting to enquiries let a sale, so I pulled the plug.

Here in the UK we have/had something called the Thomson local directory, its a variation of the old yellow pages, pre internet times.

So I used to spend money advertising in both Thomson and Yellow pages, and before the next Thomson directory was due to be released, I started to get lots of enquiries pertaining to the advert I had in the Thomson. They were phone enquiries, couldnt be specific about the IT hardware they were having problems with and wouldnt even let me come out to them for free to take a look, and even offering stupidly cheap rates, like £10 an hour, they never would commit. I would also ask them where they got my number and they would all tell me the Thomson local directory.

Fast forward 6 weeks, get a call from Thomson telling me its time to renew my advert with them, I called them out, and never heard from them again.

They relied on the suckers like me, not being able to verify whether the caller was genuine or not.

There are lots of businesses, some big names, carrying out crimes. The Law protects these criminals, partly because its an offence to hack them!

And they have big budgets for big law firms who can employ the services of companies like Lexis Nexis for their case law research.

The law and legal profession, including judges are just white collar criminals.

Not one of them have got the public to sign a contract stating an individual would adhere to the laws of the land.

So if it doesnt feel right, dont do it and dont be talked into doing it.

Edit. Dont for one minute think I'm against businesses per se, but in the scheme of things, at least here in the UK my life experiences boil down to this. Employees of the state carry out the physical and mental crimes on kids and adults, businesses do people over with what they have at their disposal, like poor workmanship, fudging stats, or the small print!

darkclouds··on Gene-Engineered Mouth Bacteria
I've done everything the experts have said, we were too poor for sweets, but they have continued to prove themselves wrong.

Something I find interesting is the role zinc plays in the oral cavity, a sufficiently high intake see's an increase of zinc in the saliva, which in turn reduces the oral bacteria levels, zinc will appear in the enamel of the teeth, and zinc has a similar oesteoblastic effect with bones where its also stored for quick release. The effect it has on bone marrow, increasing stem cell numbers, and people will be familiar with the idea of taking zinc at the start of a cold to half the duration, I'm left wondering if zinc is deliberately ignored by medical experts for fear of being put out of work!

Whats the definition of a hybrid, because if I run out of fuel but put my car in 1st gear and turn the engine over with the key, it will move forward, albeit very slowly and not very far, so technically manual ICE cars already are a hybrid!?!

Hence the question. :)

darkclouds··on U.S. fighter jet flew 100 km unpiloted, pilot explains to perplexed 911 operator
Seems like the F35 has some degree of autonomy built in to it.

"If the jet is stable in level flight, the jet will attempt to stay there. If it was in an established climb or descent, the jet will maintain a 1G state in that climb or descent until commanded to do something else," the Marine Corps said in a statement. "This is designed to save our pilots if they are incapacitated or lose situational awareness."

darkclouds··on UK Post Office: 700 Horizon software scandal victims to receive £600k each
Get real, this is the UK, in fact if you follow the progression of some of the key players, they are now manipulating politicians.

So once politicians learn to give the bird to the media headlights, you might start to see this country cleaned up, ironically I think Russell Brand can probably do more to clean up the media and their witch hunts than any member of the Royal Family or Govt.

Personally I think £600k is an insult!

So how do they spot the fake passports then?

And is this a legal on the hook for returning passengers that are not allowed in the destination country?

I've got caught in the US when Hurricane Katrina was landing, and whilst we were flown out by our carrier, other carriers in this situation would also honour our ticket and fly us back to the UK.

It seemed like an exodus where all the carriers just got people out of the country as quickly as possible. We were on the last flight out of the airport, but this isnt a legal thing is it?

darkclouds··on Microsoft to kill off third-party printer drivers in Windows
Its a little bit more complicated than that, some drivers can handle direct line printing, some can handled the Window Meta File (WMF) and some can handle Enhanced Meta File (EMF) and now there is the new EMF+.

So a trick that some people used was the wrong driver to make some printers behave in unsupported ways for a particular programs. And if a new driver didnt work, using the HP LaserJet 4 driver usually resolved the problem if it was a HP laser printer of sorts.

Throw in Inkjet printers that routed down USB connections, and the management of the USB wasnt the best, and it became a nightmare quickly having to remove registry entries because the printer uninstaller software behaved like McAfee AV software when people attempted to uninstall it.

So on point 3 then, why do countries, turn people away at the destination and not before take off, if their visa or passport is not in order?

Are their systems not joined up, or does the state just like making examples of peoples once on the destination country? I can watch this stuff happening to people at airport border controls on TV all the time so which is it? Their systems are not joined up or they just like making examples of people?

darkclouds··on Is air conditioning making cities hotter?
This maybe true, but I'd argue the air con still takes about 5mpg off the range of the fuel, but their existence and heat isnt magically disappearing, it spreads out helping to raise temperatures.

This link [1] suggests traffic jams can increase temperatures by 7 degrees Celcius.

darkclouds··on UK air traffic control meltdown
Interesting to see that flight plans over the UK have to be filed 4 hours in advance.

No mention of plane, pilot, passenger and cargo manifests. So why the 4 hour lead time, is this the time it takes UK Authorities to look people up or workout if the cargo could be dangerous in an airborne Anthrax (Gruinard) Island [1] or Japanese subway Sarin [2], or an IRA favourite, fertilizer bomb thats bypassed the usual purchase reporting regulations used by people like Jeremy Clarkson and Harry Metcalfe as their store of wealth[3]?

It makes me wonder just how much more surveillance of the population exists, knowing I cant even step out of the front door without attracting surveillance of the type that followed Dr David Kelly.

Sure its not a cyber attack per se, carried out over the internet like a DDOS attack or a brute force password guessing attack with port knocking mitigation, but how would one carry out a cyber attack on this system if the only attack vector is from people submitting flight plans?

There sure is a constant playing down of the cyber attack angle to this which makes me think someone wants to Blurred Lines!

One point on the lack of uniquely named global way points, which is the main crux of the problem falling over if some are to be believed.

The USA demonstrates a disproportionate number of similar names, by virtue of Europeans migrating to the US [4]. So has this situation arisen with this system in other parts of the world like in the US? How can a country that created the globe spanning British Empire become so insular with regards to air travel in this way?

I'd agree with the initial assessment that there appears to be a lack of testing, but are the specifications simply not fit for purpose? I'm sure various pilots could speak out here, because some of the regulations require planes to be minimally distanced from each other when transiting across the UK.

On the point of ICAO and other bodies to eradicate non-unique waypoint names, its clear there is some legacy constraint still impeding the safety of air travellers, perhaps caused by poor audio quality analogue radio, so perhaps its time for the unambiguous and globally recognised What 3 Words form of location identifier, to come into effect?

The UK police already prefer it to speed up response times [4]. And although the same location can create 3 different words, suggesting drift with GPS [5], even if What 3 Words could not be used for a global system, having something a bit longer to create an easily recognisable human globally unique identifier is needed for these flight plans and perhaps maritime situations.

Obviously global coordination will be like herding cats, and if such a fixed size global network of cells were introduced, some area's like transiting over the Atlantic or Pacific could command bigger cells, but transiting over built up areas like London would require smaller sized identifiable cells. But IF ever there was a time for the New World Order to step up to the plate and assert itself, to create a Globally Unique Place ID (GUPID) for the whole planet, now is the time.

On the point of humans were kept safe, only by the sheer common sense of the pilots and traffic control tower staff, its not something NATS did or should claim, their systems were down, so everyone had to resort back to pen and paper and blocks in queues, and apart from Silverstone when the F1 British Grand Prix is on, is air space ever that densely populated.

NATS were caught with their pants down at so many levels of altitude, is this laissez faire UK management style that saw the Govt having to step in to bail out the banks during the financial crisis, still infecting other parts of UK life and still coming to light?

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

darkclouds··on Watermelon May Have Viagra-Like Effect (2008)
There is a chemical found in grapefruit juice which when consuming around a litre of the juice, slows up the metabolism in the liver of the chemical that makes Viagra work.

This is why its advised to avoid grapefruit juice with some prescription drugs, because it causes the prescription drugs to hang around in the body for longer and in higher quantities which in turn cause health problems.

1 litre of grapefruit juice could make Viagre work for about 8 hours which is dangerous and amputation territory.

darkclouds··on Is air conditioning making cities hotter?
I've got F'all qualifications, but I can read and remember which means I also know Ozone (O3) levels can trap heat[1], and heat is Infra-Red (IR), a large part of the electromagnetic light spectrum [2] and ozone happens to be considerably higher in built up in areas[3], also contributing to the Heat Island Effect seen in towns and cities.

So whilst I cant find a copy of the study, and I recognise your comment on the modelling and approach being simplistic, the above also demonstrates that other factors like increased number of vehicles on the road, can be a factor as they contribute to ground level ozone and many also come with an air conditioning unit built into the car as standard today.
