darau1··on Git-landmine – Create local malicious Git repo
That's terrifying. I'll think twice before cloning any repository from now on.

> not disabled by default yet

You're saying there's a way to "disable" this behavior?

darau1··on Show HN: Open-source resume builder and parser
I decided that I'd track my time on any project that I work on, and put those projects into categories that I want to be represented in my CV. Whenever I generate a resume, I'll aggregate the time spent on those projects, by category. So I'll get a neat little thing that says "6 months hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails", or something similar.
darau1··on Steam Deck: First Anniversary
My only gripe with my steam deck is that every time I try to configure SSH, or install Syncthing, I get distracted by my games :(
darau1··on Local-First Web Development
> I am actually never without internet connection

You are part of a very small minority. The fact is, the majority of the world can't always be online, and so can't be properly served by always-online applications.

darau1··on Prompt Engine – Microsoft's prompt engineering library
Isn't the point of having such a simple interface that we should not have to think hard about how we ask the question? I feel like defining a structure for the query such that the machine outputs something useful is something we figured out a long time ago. Or maybe I'm just a luddite that doesn't understand the utility of something like this. Plus: if you know what the answer is supposed to be, why are you asking the computer?

Shit, emacs is racist
darau1··on Automatic1111's GitHub account suspended for "ToS violations" [restored]
Even after gaining the context that triple parentheses are antisemitic, I thought it very unusual that someone would see identifying "detailed face" as Jewish to be racist.
darau1··on Please write a breaking news article about a leaf falling from a tree
I've seen many mentions of ChatGPT replacing Google, or SOF; ushering in an age of "knowledge" to replace the age of information.
darau1··on Please write a breaking news article about a leaf falling from a tree
I did: it gave me a better starting point than Google.

I thought your tool would teach me how to build my own GPT3-like model on my laptop :(
darau1··on Reverse-engineering the source prompts of Notion AI
I did not try that, but it's good to know it has those parameters built-in.
darau1··on Reverse-engineering the source prompts of Notion AI
I think ChatGPT might sometimes just spit the prompt back out; earlier I asked it to write me a resignation letter. I then asked it to add a piece saying that I "looked forward to working together in the future in whatever capacity that might be" -- it proceeded to add a sentence to the final paragraph that read "I look forward to working together in the future in whatever capacity that might be".

The letter itself was fine, I just thought it odd that it added my sentence verbatim.

darau1··on Show HN: We scaled Git to support 1 TB repos
> let the ZFS snapshots handle the versioning/rotation which would give you the benefits of block level diffs

Can you explain this a bit? I don't know anything about ZFS, but it sounds as though it creates snapshots based on block level differences? Maybe a git-annex backend could be written to take advantage of that -- I don't know.

I don't suppose those long-running stress tests can be automated in any way, can they?

Well, I doubt he's had a bad experience because I don't think he ever has one long enough for it to start showing signs of age.

I know a guy that bought every new Samsung flagship device as soon as they hit stores. He said he just has to upgrade.

darau1··on UML: My Part in Its Downfall
If UML is dead, I do hope there will be a replacement; I dread having to create diagrams in LucidChart again -- even if they're technically incorrect.
darau1··on Why is it so hard to write a scaffolding tool? (2019)
To your point about not using scaffolding as a tool to speed development: I have found that rails' scaffolding commands make me lazy. I will routinely destroy, and recreate, an entire scaffold because I need to change it; somehow I think this is easier than just editing the file I already have on my system -- only to then spend 10 minutes combing through all the changes rails made so I don't lose any of the changes I made.

It's very silly.

darau1··on Flyweight: An ORM for SQLite
Having worked with a decade+ old, hand-engineered, framework-less, codebase, for a profitable international business, I'd say they are anything but indispensable.

They are very nice to have, and I'll implement one the first chance I get, but "indispensable" is a stretch, IMO

darau1··on Someone is pretending to be me
I interviewed one guy that seemed to fit this description -- he didn't speak much, and when he did his accent was strong. He had someone with him, that seemed to speak on his behalf.
darau1··on Someone is pretending to be me
Someone messaged me on reddit once, and straight up asked me to do exactly this. Below is the message, but I haven't included their name because I think they were at least trying to seem sincere.

---

Hi, hope you're doing well.

We are looking for a professional interviewee. I'm not sure if you've heard similar thing somewhere. We are a talented developer group specialized in web and mobile software development. We have partnerships with US people and deliver our service to clients by pretending to be US developers. And we share profits with them. Our partners are satisfied with this business model.

Everything is perfect except on one thing. It's just the interview with clients. Normally in the interviews, the clients ask us some technical questions to see if we are able to deliver the service they expect. Because we are not native speakers, we are suffering from taking the interviews and many clients are passing by us even though they can get what they want. So we want a native interviewee and hope you are interested in this model.

Please let me know if you're interested in further discussion. Thank you!

darau1··on Launch HN: Astro (YC W21) – Build your own dev teams in Latin America
I've been in contact with 3 different firms like Astro in the past 3 months, and now you guys pop up. Did something happen somewhere in the American job market? Or have I just been discovered to be living under a rock?
