daoudc··on Make your own feed reader with NewsBlur's new API
This looks really cool. Does it have cross-origin resource sharing enabled? This would be useful for sites that would like to use it directly from javascript.

EDIT: I've just seen the login mechanism; I don't think CORS would be useful with this.

daoudc··on Living in the zone
I almost missed my train stop yesterday because of this. I think the train works particularly well for me because:

  - It's a routine, so I can plan a difficult job to work on
as I'm walking to the station
  - There's no internet, so no HN/other distractions
  - It's normally quiet
One thing I've noticed is that I can only get into the zone if I've got a hard enough problem to work on. I don't seem to be able to do lots of easy problems as efficiently as one large one.
daoudc··on Vi Hart: Every school should replace calculus with recreational math
It's so true that the way that maths is taught at schools needs a complete revamp. At secondary school level it should be taught as a creative subject from the start: choose some rules and see what happens.

I agree with the second statement, but I actually disagree with PG on the first one. Trying hard doesn't necessarily mean quitting your day job.

It can mean doing a day job to support your family whilst working on your project in your spare time.

Using the reverse logic, most people that produce something that people want will be earning enough from their project to quit their day job. PG's observation doesn't imply for me that quitting the day job has to come first.

Perhaps it's true that such projects aren't companies, but so what? It doesn't make them of any less value. In my opinion, producing something that people love and use is valuable whether it's done as a company or a side-project.
daoudc··on Google Tech Talk: "All Questions Answered" by Donald Knuth
I saw Knuth's version of this talk in London - what a legend! The poor guy had an awful cough but soldiered on, insisting he was fine.
