daoudc··on Show HN: I'm building a non-profit search engine
Agreed, this was my thinking - and since I'm better at Python, it's faster for me to get stuff done. I would like to rewrite it in Rust though, all help from Rustaceans gladly accepted!
daoudc··on Show HN: I'm building a non-profit search engine
Yes, that is a concern. I'd probably worry about it if and when it started happening, however.
daoudc··on Show HN: I'm building a non-profit search engine
Yes, I'm planning to do something like this.
daoudc··on Show HN: I'm building a non-profit search engine
Actually I was thinking of something vaguely along those lines!

Thanks, but these are not technically non-profit:

"Ecosia is a search engine based in Berlin, Germany. It donates 80% of its profits to nonprofit organizations that focus on reforestation" [1]

"80% of profits will be distributed among charities and non-profit organizations. The remaining 20% will be put aside for a rainy day." [2]

"Ekoru.org is a search engine dedicated to saving the planet. The company donates 60% of revenue generated from clicks on sponsored search results to partner organizations who work on climate change issues" [3]

Thanks for the feedback! I'll take a look at your examples and see if I can improve the rankings.

TBF I don't think Google intentionally degrades results, but they have less incentive to improve the results.
daoudc··on Show HN: I'm building a non-profit search engine
Niche for now, but I think a lot of people can see the value of search without ads.

Check out YaCy. It's great if you're happy with slow search!
daoudc··on Show HN: I'm building a non-profit search engine
Yes, I think a subscription model is the way to go.

It's pronounced "mumble". I live in Mumbles, which is spelt Mwmbwls in Welsh.

I also want to incorporate a community aspect to ranking, allowing upvoting and downvoting of results. I've not yet figured out how to reconcile this idea with not having any tracking though. Perhaps a separate interface for logged-in users.

Wikimedia has an estimated $157m in donations this year. If we could get a small fraction of this amount we should be able to build something pretty good.
daoudc··on Show HN: I'm building a non-profit search engine
The plan is to fund it through donations

Thanks! A really simple one for now: number of matching terms, and then prioritising matches earlier in the result string. But this is something I'm looking forward to working on properly when I get a bigger index.
daoudc··on A librarian and a food historian rediscovered the recipes of Moorish Spain
Claudia Roden's book of Middle Eastern Food is excellent and includes many medieval recipes.
daoudc··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Coincidentally, I just posted this on HN: an animation tool for kids, at https://drawa.live

This came out of watching my son do animations with Flipaclip, and thinking there must be a better way to do simple animations.

daoudc··on Show HN: Webshot – Screenshot Websites as a Service (Open Source)
Nice idea, but entering my website (https://drawa.live) the link doesn't get updated, and entering the URL manually gives an error.
daoudc··on Show HN: A fun “animation” web app for kids, made with my 10yo son
This project came out of watching my son make animations with Flipaclip and seeing how long it took to create an animation. I wanted to make something that would allow people to make animations really quickly.

We're still a long way from the end vision of what I hope this could be, but it's still fun to play with. The next step is to allow you to make sprites with multiple frames.

How to use:

- Press the + button to upload an image to use as a sprite

- Drag sprites to position them

- Press the record button to start recording an mp4

- Allow microphone recording to record your voice with the animation

- Press stop to download the mp4

This is a simple static web page, nothing is sent to any servers!

daoudc··on Show HN: Bel
I love the idea of trying to build a mathematically pure language. I wonder how far it is possible to use optimisation techniques to make Bel efficient. For example, can the representation of strings as pairs be automatically optimised to a sequence of characters?
daoudc··on How to be a 10x data scientist [Medium premium]
Resubmitted with a 'friend link' so paywall shouldn't apply.
daoudc··on How to be a 10x data scientist [Medium premium]
I didn't actually realise they'd made it premium - I thought I'd turned that off. Will try and get a link that gives access.
daoudc··on Google Cloud Text-To-Speech Powered by DeepMind WaveNet Technology
I had an idea this morning for a personalised "podcast" that could read out e.g. the weather in your area, any new and important emails, the headlines and first paragraph of top stories from your favourite sources and notifications from social media.

I think this is the missing thing that was needed to make this viable.

Hi guys, author here. I'd love to hear feedback on the algorithm we used, and whether you've heard of anyone doing anything similar.
daoudc··on Ask HN: Would you use this SEO tool?
Thanks for the feedback!

1, 2, 3 and 4: definitely doable 5: tricky, probably impossible to do reliably 6: doable 7: without any manual interaction this could end up looking spammy. If you're happy with that, it could work.

Also forgot to ask what platform people would prefer: Android, iPhone, Windows, OS X or Linux? Platforms like Messenger and Slack are probably out of the question unfortunately because the bot would have to be querying Google automatically, which is more reliable from your own IP.

daoudc··on The Moral Bucket List
There are many paths to achieve this kind of good character, but in my (somewhat biased) opinion, Sufism is one of the most richly developed.

I'd love to hear from anyone with experience of other ML libraries - I'll update the article with relevant info.
