dannyphantom··on Vice website is shutting down
I’d literally love that idea; it’s a really compelling concept but my first concern would be the potential risk licensing/copyright issues that could arise from the original site owners transferring the site to IA. But seriously that would be so cool to see one day.

I came across this thread on DataHoarders before seeing it here and was glad to see so many jump at the opportunity to help archive it on our own ends. In case anyone may be interested to jump in, here’s the link to that thread. https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/s/fnY46CuYOq

dannyphantom··on 21 Years. 21 Cooking Lessons
So throughout high school and undergrad, I worked as a server at all sorts of places, and one of the most important "lessons" I internalized during all that time is what I (lamely) refer to as the 'El Fuego Principle' (yes I know it's lame but bear with me lol). Essentially, it boils down to this:

Use Imperfect and "Unattractive" Produce

El Fuego was my favorite serving job. Food was always amazing and customers were in and out within ~30 minutes so you saw a lot of food going onto tables.

In the kitchen, they used produce that was less than perfect. Nothing that posed any real health risk, but items that the average consumer might overlook at the grocery store or farmers market due to their less-than-ideal appearance. At the end of the day, everything they dished out was amazing which really cemented the "lesson" that we shouldn't be afraid to use "gross" looking ingredients...unless it has actually spoiled, it's probably just fine to use and you'll surprise yourself with how much you can save by going for the cheaper options.

dannyphantom··on When every ketchup but one went extinct (2022)
So I have a rather unfortunate tale about ketchup being refilled at diners from my time working as a server in undergrad that affirms your concerns.

In the back of the kitchen, we had a ketchup refill area which used a large bag-in-box system; here is what that looks like: https://i.imgur.com/jP8zrrI.png

As you can imagine, the bag lasted quite a while as we would just top up the classic red ketchup bottle with a screw lid. But...because our restaurant (Hamburger Mary's) was low/no-volume from Monday to Thursday, those bottles just...uh...sat on the tables for days on end, at most they'd sit out for a week.

On the tables.

At room temperature.

With constant exposure to air.

You can probably see where this is going:

The ketchup would gradually ferment due to the warm room temperature and continuous exposure to air. This fermentation process gave it a unique ‘tangy’ flavor that some customers mistook for a special “beer ketchup”. Given that I worked in Milwaukee, WI (a city known for its breweries and beer culture) their assumption wasn’t entirely baseless

But in reality, they were complimenting the taste of…well…rancid ketchup.

I left shortly after that experience to a real restaurant (Rock Bottom; if you like cajun pasta, here is their recipe for it: https://imgur.com/a/fjZnDAz) but yeah -- definitely be careful where you go to eat. Higher than normal employee turnover is absolutely a warning sign that the restaurant is poorly run and probably not the best place to eat.

dannyphantom··on At Least 15% of Reddit Content Is Corporate Trolls Manipulating Public Opinion
Well...yeah. With some free time about a year ago I did a bunch of the Reddit ads formula modules and then veered off into reading threads from actual users who were seeking guidance on how to leverage the platform this way (without paying Reddit to run a campaign) and they all discuss this practice.

On the 'official' side, Reddit publishes the things you'd expect: - run your ads on our cool platform to reach your customers of tomorrow...today! - case study/success stories/etc - Reddit is a great platform to improve sentiment about your_brand!

On the 'un-official' end, users discuss how to circumvent actually paying the platform to achieve their desired results and rely on astroturfing or other clandestine methods because it's much cheaper with a much more attractive upside if a conversion is landed. There is also a lot of scammer accounts that send junk like this: https://imgur.com/a/q106SKI

dannyphantom··on New pill helps Covid smell and taste loss fade quickly
Oooh yes yes - this is such wonderful news! Literally weeks before the world changed my boyfriends dad had begun to explore the world of cooking; he was so happy when we would bring him to niche little grocers to try things he had never known about before and trying all the food - but after his infection, and for the last 2 years - nothing. No taste. No smell.

We try to make up for it by encouraging him to make stuff with varied textures and components but he's been really depressed about it since. His pinterest recipe board he would share with us hasn't been updated in years and his meals typically consist of protein/starch/veggie with no seasoning as it doesn't register.

I am so hopeful for something that can bring him his sense of smell and taste back; so far his medical teams have kinda just been bouncing him around to various specialties - he even had a small surgery in an attempt but no dice.

dannyphantom··on Why the Internet Isn't Fun Anymore
I really like 'Old Hollywood' (especially Warner Bros) and I actually find tons and tons of niche little pockets of the web by using Yandex.

Even with search operators Google/Bing just...doesn't make it easy to find the little blogs (that are still publishing!) that cite niche little fan-hosted websites with literal treasure troves of pictures, media, newspaper scans.

I might be thinking the 'old-web' in a different sense than others here - but you find a lot just by poking around websites you find elsewhere and see where it takes you. Sites like neocities is really good for it but I'll just list some below.

https://tilde.town/users.html - kinda like neocities with tons of little self-made project sites that are easy to open 1 million tabs from

https://512kb.club/ - little sites, often link to other niche sites

https://1mb.club/ - same as above, just different size

http://oh-hi.info/ - just a website for street photography of humans

https://www.pointlesssites.com/ - just remembered this; it was something i used to check out every few weeks as a kid and it led me to being a fan of https://www.newrafael.com/websites/ who makes some fun stuff reminiscent of what is my age groups 'old web' from around 2008-onward lol

http://www.explodingdog.com/ - just a cute little site of someone who drew submissions people sent in

https://wiby.me/surprise/ - wiby is a cool project that was posted about here around the time i joined; i added it to my bookmarks bar so it can just take me to a random site every now and then - it's also a search engine so you can use it to just find other cool sites instead of their surprise feature https://wiby.me/

dannyphantom··on Dead grandma locket request tricks Bing Chat’s AI into solving security puzzle
> A finger prick to take a blood sample to confirm humanity?

Funny enough - I actually wrote a [cathartic] short essay on that very concept a few months ago when I was being buried alive by captchas. I called it 'Blood for Access: An Alternative Approach to Circumvent Captchas'.

Here is an excerpt from the final paragraph:

In conclusion, the current state of captchas deployed across the internet can be frustrating and exclusionary for many users. My proposal for a blood-based authentication approach aims to highlight the absurdity of captchas and advocate for a more user-friendly and inclusive internet experience. While there may be challenges in implementing this approach, the potential benefits in terms of improved user experience and inclusivity make it worthy of consideration. It's time to explore alternative methods that prioritize user accessibility and convenience while maintaining security, and blood-based authentication could be a step towards a more inclusive internet for all users.

dannyphantom··on Amazon Prime Video content to start including ads next year
Was never really able to find a great way to land in a role where you track and measure conversions but it's always been a [admittedly lame...] interest of mine. TV ads seem to be more about brand awareness instead of actually generating conversions (as much as Hulu tries on FireTV) but it's kind of cool to look at objectively all the same.

Curious to see what kind of ads Amazon will allow on their streaming platform, how much those ads will cost, how much more expensive it will be to inject ads into any of their 'most watched this week/month' programs, and blah blah blah - the numbers and metrics will be fun to look at once they are published.

All the streaming services are in the process of migrating to this model which was kinda the main thing they advertised as not doing...but we're in 2023 now...so c'est la vie, I guess. Another user used the term "adflation" which is a pretty concise way to view the shifting model.

dannyphantom··on Google accused of directing motorist to drive off collapsed bridge
The boring context is that, in situations like this, the plaintiffs will indicate a large(ish) batch of defendants that will gradually slim down as the case moves forward in the court - the plaintiff attorney has a duty to cover all possibilities.

Some of the other comments here already touch on who may be the more liable party other than Google. The public works department seemed to have played a game of passing around the 'accountability ball' which contributed to a tragic event.

These cases generally take a pretttty long time to come to actually come to a close and it's an absolutely surreal and bleak experience the entire time.

dannyphantom··on Gallery – Making Molecules
They really are something, right? My boyfriend had/has an open offer to jump into a career in scientific illustration if he wants to (but he's in love with his museum job). His neighbor has been doing it for decades and her work has been in many of the mass-produced scientific textbooks used at the high-school and college level - it was really cool to see some of her actual sketches and prints when visiting his parents a few years ago
dannyphantom··on Kias and Hyundais Keep Getting Stolen by the Thousands and Cities Are Suing
Here is a recent letter written by Cem Hatipoglu, NHTSA's acting associate director for enforcement [1] in response to a letter from the California Attorney General requesting that the NHTSA to institute a recall of Kia and Hyundai vehicles [2].

> At this time, NHTSA has not determined that this issue constitutes either a safety defect or noncompliance requiring a recall under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, 49 U.S.C. Chapter 301. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard identified in your letter, FMVSS No. 114, does not require an engine immobilizer. See 49 C.F.R. § 571.114. Also, the test procedure specified in that standard does not contemplate actions taken by criminal actors to break open or remove part of the steering column and take out the ignition lock to start a vehicle. See id. § 571.114, S6. Here, the safety risk arises from unsafe use of a motor vehicle by an unauthorized person after taking significant destructive actions to parts of the vehicle.

dannyphantom··on When your classmates threaten you with felony charges
That's fair.

The use of "reasonable" in generally used to qualify some standard of behavior or conduct that is expected from individuals in specific situations. Because "reasonable" is inherently subjective, the responsibility for making the determination is (generally) passed over to a jury who will weigh what the prosecution and defense have presented which entails previous cases, the specific fact pattern of the case being deliberated, etc.

There are also situations where an actual judge makes the determination but generally, in a criminal context, it's up to a jury.

dannyphantom··on Fifth Circuit: Law enforcement doesn’t need warrants to search phones at border
> In response to Mr. Malik’s assertion of privilege, Officer Sullivan informed Mr. Malik that DHS was seizing the iPhone and that the digital contents would be searched. Officer Sullivan did not disconnect the iPhone from the internet or the communications network. He failed to take action that would protect the iPhone from accessing the internet or a communications network. Officer Sullivan ordered Mr. Malik to leave the deferred inspection area without the iPhone while the iPhone still was connected to the internet and a communications network.

That's the part I was curious about. For a while now, the suggestion shared by bar associations [on both sides of the border] has been that assertions of privileged should always, always, always be accompanied by disconnecting the device from the internet.

Here is a letter [1] from 2017 sent by [President of] the ABA to policymakers on changes that should be made to the process; but I'll just summarize the relevant part:

[Linda Klein, ABA President] suggested that, if and when a lawyer travels across the border with any electronic device that could contain privileged or otherwise confidential client information, officers should only be allowed to conduct a standardized, cursory physical inspection - AND - unless the officials obtain a subpoena based on reasonable suspicion or a warrant supported by probable cause, border agents should absolutely not be allowed to read, copy over, seize or share any privileged or confidential documents and or files stored on those devices.

For an attorney, the professional obligation to do everything you possibly can to disallow unauthorized access to privileged materials is essentially the golden rule of the profession; NY/Michigan has, for a while now, strongly suggested to members that, in the event of a border agent getting dangerously close to accessing information they shouldn't - the attorney should escalate to a superior officer to find a solution where the privileged information remains confidential - but - this decision seems to renders escalating as a waste of time which really isn't great.

Best thing to do is disconnect and power electronic devices off prior to presenting yourself at the border. That should be safest for the foreseeable future and I'm not aware of any specific challenges on whether LE should be allowed to power on/reconnect a device during an investigation - that would be an incredibly concerning development and thankfully we aren't there.

At the end of the day, there are tons arguments for how these interactions should be conducted presented by both sides. The whole 'security' thing does have some merit - but allowing increasingly infringing behavior in the spirit of 'security' isn't something that should go unchallenged.

dannyphantom··on Major U.S. energy org targeted in QR code phishing attack
Ah! Yeah - this happened at my college. They sold the [huge] parking lot adjacent to the main union area to the company that owns all the lots in the city since it was so torn up and [assuming] didn't want to pay to fix it.

Before it was sold, you just bought a little placard that hung from your rear-view mirror to park in the lot.

Well - the company it was sold do has been doing the QR thing for years at this point so they just implemented it after a quick repaving and that was that.

It's been a few people at this point who simply make a clone of the parking website and slap their own QR code stickers on a bunch of the spots. If you saw a ticket on the windshield upon returning to the car, most people assume they made a mistake so they are double paying for the spot. Once to a phisher and once to the actual company in the form of a ticket.

Company has sent out a ton of emails about it but because the lot is so high-volume [it's next to a new stadium so it's no longer just business hours college parking] the ability to make a quick buck so easily is just...there. No changes being made by the company - you'll see a thread pop up on the city subreddit about it every now and then where others share their own experiences - and that's as far as it goes.

I think it was either here or Reddit that left a comment predicting that Stadia would eventually be canned - my boyfriend wanted to play a game that was only being released on the platform so I ended up getting it for his birthday when it came with a Chromecast.

Well - life got in the way so he never actually got to play the game much but Google did refund our Stadia/Chromecast purchase so we got a Chromecast out of it at least.

I remember reading a comment from a dev of one of the Stadia exclusives here who was very upset to learn that their work moot after it was announced here; can't imagine how deflating that must have felt for them.

Can’t even begin to imagine how they must have felt in actually being there…in the cold, sitting in the small watercraft inching closer by the minute as the operator navigates what looks to be an ice-minefield, and finally being face to face with the phenomenon…up close and personal.

What an amazing thing to experience. Something that a camera just can’t capture.

Jeez - I can't imagine the stress he's under in dealing with something that isn't, and should never have been, something he has to deal with. It's enough to make you want to scream into a pillow until your lungs give out.

It's just so frustrating and deflating to go through the process. It's a chore that shouldn't really be our problem - but it is and it feels terrible to be beholden to that process and ultimately come out losing in the end when you get a letter like that in the mail.

I had a identity theft come up a few years ago and I'm still dealing with it (all the way back from 2016!). But at the end of the day, I really shouldn't complain because things could always have been worse.

I just empathize with your final sentiment completely. We're just...beholden to it. Bleh.

dannyphantom··on Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators from Subreddits Continuing Blackouts
I suppose this will be a litmus test on how valuable long-established moderators are to the platform.

At the end of the day, they are volunteers who are now boarding themselves behind the property of their digital landlord so the risk of eviction isn't really all that surprising.

I've seen endless complaints from users who feel personally offended by being muted/banned from a community and a common response to their complaints is "if you don't like it, go to another site". If the moderators are not happy with the direction of the platform, they are free to vacate the property willingly or have an admin spend :30s removing them.

The relationship has always been unilateral in favor of the people who actually work there.
