danmur··on Mark Zuckerberg on Apple’s Vision Pro headset
Feels a bit like 3d movies. The producers can practically taste a fresh new market, just have to get the consumers stampeding.

I don't think there's been the Avatar equivalent yet, and though it might take a bit longer, I think there will still be a tipping point where enough people realise it's garbage and Zuckerberg is thrown into a long dark well forever. Followed by the peoples' tim cook right to the stomach.

Slightly more seriously, this stuff reminds me of that book Snow Crash (which I love). But it's never going to be like that, and even if it was, the virtual world aspect of that is a bit of a horrible dystopia. It's like a drug.

danmur··on TOML: Tom's Obvious Minimal Language
I think YAML was designed to machine readable. What would you do with it otherwise? Nobody's writing poetry in it (that I know of)
danmur··on TOML: Tom's Obvious Minimal Language
I assume neither of us has experienced these YAML bites that others have :).

I don't mind TOML but I don't find it either intuitive or obvious. The syntax for how nested things are flattened I just find really hard to read and write. It's fine though, not that big a deal.

danmur··on One line of code that did cost $8k
250mb eh :). That deserves a bullet point

danmur··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
They get away with it because they're cute damn them
danmur··on Show HN: Regex.ai – AI-powered regular expression generator
Well, I tried extracting fields from some logs I had lying around and I can tell you why I think it's not useful: 1. I select DEBUG and INFO, but it doesn't work out that there are WARNs etc in there and extract those too.

2. Some of the regexes are just.. wrong? I selected individual fields but there's one mangled regex that gives me two fields and the text in between, I didn't ask for that and it's no use.

3. None of the regexes could extract the date I selected (of the form 2023-03-28 05:23:28.844); some of the 'agents' used the literal date, the only one that broken it down into \d's didn't match anything because the DEBUG and INFO were mangled into there.

I'm not really sure how this would be at all useful in its current form?

Prompt Engineer is such a pompous title. I think AI operator would be more accurate.
danmur··on SPA view transitions land in Chrome 111
What do you mean, Windows is getting better and better :P
danmur··on SPA view transitions land in Chrome 111
If you consider other consequences that result then it can be "weakness" to take an easier path. I won't use ridiculous examples, but many bad things have happened because it was easier.
danmur··on The apps that Americans search to “delete” the most
I like how the PlayStation app is on there, I assume not because it's an unhealthy app but it's so badly made and rage-inducing to use

danmur··on The Missing Semester of Your CS Education
Lots of people at my work use it, but I don't know if I'd consider it essential. If you can use any editor/IDE very fluently that's good; probably doesn't hurt to learn with vim if you don't already have that.
danmur··on The Missing Semester of Your CS Education
All of mine are missing bar the first one
danmur··on So, you’ve been challenged to a duel. What are the rules? (2016)
Maybe if it was more like an interview, but if they don't answer a direct question with a direct answer they get a little stab. ScoMo would have been a pincushion years ago.
danmur··on The Pretty Good House
This sounds so familiar :P
danmur··on Static HTML Comments
Server side includes work nicely for this, I think nginx was what I used (long time ago now). You can even inline them on load but reload htmx-style with minimal effort.
danmur··on WordPress is 20 years old
I don't think anyone disrespects the commercial success, just the technical crappiness of the product
danmur··on Names should be cute, not descriptive
Yep. All my personal projects I give a name that's related to the subject but will never be a public name. Helps a lot with naming paralysis.
danmur··on Show HN: Socketify.py: Http/Https and WebSockets servers for PyPy3 and Python3
The title seems accurate and appropriate to me. If I were selecting a framework for performance I might chose this framework, which I would use through Python, rather than a Go framework that I would program in Go. It's a framework, you use it with Python, and the performance is good (apparently, I didn't check).
danmur··on Mini brains grown from stem cells developed eye-like features (2021)
It could be much worse, they could develop emacs instead of vim

I don't really understand how false positives can be eliminated. Maybe it's still better overall.
danmur··on Why all the NixOS hype? Did we all forget about Guix?
The nix command was nicer before flakes too
danmur··on LastPass user vaults stolen in recent hack
Just me of course but I don't think I'd guess that without certain UI cues. With checkboxes for eg I wouldn't even think of shift clicking. Not disagreeing, just thinking aloud :)
danmur··on Getting a Psion 5 palmtop from 1997 online via PPP (and a Raspberry Pi)
I have one of the Ericsson-branded ones of these (MC218), such a great device. It still works too. I had an Ericsson phone (the little flip one) and the little IR modem that plugged into the bottom of the phone. Data was so prohibitively expense I don't think I ever used it.
danmur··on Lastpass Security Incident
It also didn't export attachments when I used it (long while ago now though)
danmur··on Ruby adds a core class called Data to represent simple immutable value objects
Yeah that's true, it is different. Neat :). With Scala you would put immutable types in your list if you wanted to, but I get what you mean, it's not the same.
danmur··on Ruby adds a core class called Data to represent simple immutable value objects
Scala has immutable types in the standard library too, but I don't think they make much sense without the language being statically typed. By which I mean adding immutable types to Python or whatever's stdlib would not be that hard, but it would most likely be confusing since you don't know for sure what you have until you look at it and see.
