danielnicollet··on Ask HN: Has anyone hacked their homes?
love this joke (just like I loved your post at http://shrughes.com/p/how-to-vote-on-hacker-news/) and I agree the word "hack" has become tarnished as of late on HN. I think hardik988 was genuinely asking about how to hack together some sort of smart local grid application to control all the equipments around his home though. That's one of my fantasies too and I just haven't had time to do it but one day...

In the meantime, here is a couple of great places for tips on that: http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/login.jsp?url=http://ieeex... http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/tag/toaster/

if you want to control the utility down the road too ;-) http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=power-hacke...

EDIT - just to clarify my POV: It's a terrible thing he did. He probably desserves this.

ORIGINAL - probably misunderstood by the downvoters: But I surely hope he did grope her and he was indeed as abusive as she described him to be. Because if he didn't all this content we are creating will just serve to leave a very bad looking legacy of doubt around his character. I will therefore leave the thread hoping for him that he responds soon on http://flori.posterous.com/

that's what I thought too - she came to the court of HN opinion which maybe not the best for this particular matter but at least all should be fully transparent
danielnicollet··on Processing XSLT Transformations in Windows
Thanks. I am not much of a windows person but I guess if can also use a browser with a XSLT processing instruction. Just didn't think of this when I posted. But thx for the input. Any other good client would be appreciated.
danielnicollet··on Haidinger's brush
Haidinger's brush may also be seen by looking at a white area on many LCD flat panel computer screens (due to the polarization effect of the display), in which case it is often diagonal.

funny I can see this looking right under the very paragraph above against the #FFFFFF background of the wikipedia page

danielnicollet··on Need a name for your startup? I wrote a domain name generator in Node.JS
This IS nice. I tried it and does come up with good suggestions. A tool which think does a little better on the semantics side is http://nameboy.com. Their problem is that names proposed are often not available (despite) their status at nameboy.com. Your tool seems to avoid that problem somehow. The way you figured out to get your availability info in parallel and with DNS checks first seems very elegant.

I know this market well. if you want more ideas and suggestions for better name generation logic and dictionaries, give me a shout (rastaquere AATT gmail DOTT com). maybe we can work on something together.

The two people at the heart of the matter: Noirin Plunket Shirley - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiM6_pCyvMI Florian Liebert - http://vimeo.com/4211288

I'd like them to concentrate on tech stuff more and this stuff less.

With all due respect also, I feel the way you do but if by "flagged", you mean you felt my post should be deleted, I don't understand anymore. Don't you think that topic should be discussed if the problem is to be resolved by, say creating other HNs with dedicated topics such as "hackers-only" HN...?
danielnicollet··on My dalliance with smart drugs - and the lesson I learned
hehe - just "a bit annoyed" but wasting hard drive space with this long and slightly insulting rant!? you either have lots of time on your hands or are really flustered. I agree, the discussion has lost all meaning at this point. going back to my startup now :)
danielnicollet··on Low Hanging Fruit for Most Online Stores: Better Search Features
yes but you could do it with a hosted search solution which, can index without crawling if it can be fed xml feeds of old and new posts...
danielnicollet··on Wipe-out
Good for Andy. Burnout happens but acknowledging it is half the battle. Going "back to zero" is necessary when you run fast all day, every day. As a matter of fact, companies should do this too sometimes...

Even Robert Redford says it (not exactly a computer hacker ;-): http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/about.aspx?id=12440 "It was about: I was tired. I was 40 years old. I had a decade of hard work that took me very often away from my family, who mean a great deal to me. And I thought, "If you're not wise —“ It, it’s important sometimes to stop at the height of things and to re-, re-stock. Go back to zero. Take yourself back to zero. Sometimes you have to do that yourself and constantly — to be able to rejuvenate and keep going, you have to sometimes start all over again. And I felt it was the time for that. I'd been very rewarded in the business, done a lot of films, had just directed my first film, had had a tremendous reaction. I said, "You know, this is probably a good time to stop and step away for a while and, and reevaluate my life.”

danielnicollet··on Low Hanging Fruit for Most Online Stores: Better Search Features
I concur with nkurz here. Inverted index are the basis for most full-text search engines and they can handle this quite well.

Another issue with searching a large forum like HN though can be keeping the index up-to-date through crawling new posts constantly to add the terms they contain to the inverted index. However, you can usually build a simple script that adds news posts URLs to a list of priority crawl targets.

Free HTDig (http://www.htdig.org/) for instance could do the task pretty well and run on a budget hosting plan described above. It can index up to 100ks of documents easily and may require disk space upgrades for large sites but not much more.

There are many other inverted index search engines available and some now easily index without crawling through XML feeds from your CMS or forum software.

danielnicollet··on The Day US Customs Found A Bullet In My Pocket
What evidence do you have please? Seriously, there are just so many conjectures here. What Al Quaeda fundamentally likes or dislikes for instance, may have nothing to do with the actual reason pushing a young suicide bomber to accept the task. Many known cases of westerners becoming terrorists show a personal history of extreme religious views, which this sort of customs treatment can only serve to exacerbate, no?
danielnicollet··on Brooke the Immortal: An American Child May Hold Secrets to Aging
Why the journalists and PR folks probably figured out calling her condition "immortality" would attract more attention just like it did here on HN, it appears obvious that there are many possible explanations for her condition, other than retro-aging. She could simply be suffering from a combination of genetic or non-genetic disease creating her very small stature and mental disabilities.

danielnicollet··on The Day US Customs Found A Bullet In My Pocket
What a shortcut Hvs. That's not at all what Jdietrich said. He is just trying to say that this sort of grilling can be more difficult to endure if you ARE a Muslim, and that's a fact no? I think we all agree that terrorism must be fought, but like any problem you fight it better once you understand its motivations. Fighting is not always done with physical or mental violence either. Sometimes, the best way to fight something like terrorism is to understand that the phenomenon doesn't reside with the perpetrator only but also with the provocateur.

What I mean here is that maybe US forces need to learn to be a bit more unpredictable and attack Terrorism in a less frontal manner to succeed. Just like the IRA did in Ireland with the Brits. Imagine what kind of violence could come from Americans if they were greeted by foreign customs officers abroad with angry screams like: "So you believe in Jesus!?!?" for several hours in a room with a mirror.

danielnicollet··on My dalliance with smart drugs - and the lesson I learned
I am absolutely not anti-intellectual - more like the contrary in fact. However, I don't see any intellectualism here.

As I said, point me to serious research that shows coffee and neural stimulants are just as harmless as each other and and I'll side with you. I don't have to provide you research that shows they are vastly different. It's just so freaking obvious.

I suggest you read this about Ritalin and you tell me if it reads like the description of coffee: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000606 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylphenidate

Finally, I am very familiar with these medications since I took several neural agents as a younger guy when experiencing epilepsy. I am not against them, I am just surprised about so much talk of self-medication and I think it's plain wrong for people to think this harmless. But this is free world, so why don't you just ignore me and keep popping instead of getting all flustered about my comments, if you are sure of yourself that is.

danielnicollet··on My dalliance with smart drugs - and the lesson I learned
You can "challenge" me all you want but that still doesn't justify you or others downvoting my comments ;-) And it's just not three downvotes because I was up 6 at some point.

I worked briefly in the pharmaceutical industry and it taught me a few things about the level of testing and knowledge labs have about the pills that you compare to coffee. There has been much more research about coffee (which I remind you I don't drink either because I know of its side-effects) than there has been about the neural enhancers you kids take. You want to believe it's OK. Go ahead but don't blame me for saying it makes no sense to me. And you are right, I am not willing to put much more time into going in details on this. Too busy and the topic is really so off the charts to me that I am pretty sure of myself here.

I have heard so much of the same non-sense pseudo-chemistry from all the people advocating for one drug or another for their wellbeing. The argumentative here really sound of addiction. So I challenge you to explain in bio-chemical terms why these drugs are as harmless as coffee. Good luck!

danielnicollet··on My dalliance with smart drugs - and the lesson I learned
"Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding conflicting ideas simultaneously." You tell me what's conflicting in my feelings because I'd be curious to know.

On the other hand, anyone who feels they need to downvote me because I expressed feeling felt a bit troubled by their revelations about the way they pop pills to improve their programming skills is maybe downvoting me to feel better about themselves, don't you think? I mean if YC's majority opinion is that pill popping is OK, AND/OR that anyone disagreeing should be downvoted, I think I want nothing to do with YC. I surely hope it's not the case. Now tke shots at my karma all you want!

danielnicollet··on My dalliance with smart drugs - and the lesson I learned
hehe - I am getting a coffee chemistry course now! I don't even drink coffee ;-) you would have done much better not replying at all.
danielnicollet··on Just fucking figure it out
True. You obviously don't know much about this industry. I worked for Disney Studios for a while after they bought Infoseek where I worked. Th clash of cultures was evident there as it is here. The main measures of success in the entertainment biz are qualitative, not quantitative despite what financial data and audience measurements can lead you to believe. There are many more talented writers than there are producers to produce their scripts. It's all about relationships and it's also about talent too but talent alone is just not enough. So I repeat the advice: just figure it the fuck out ;-)
danielnicollet··on My dalliance with smart drugs - and the lesson I learned
wow - you see no difference between coffee and a neural enhancer? this is way off the chart for me here. I have no difficulties seeing authenticity in what I do vs. the pill-popping programming regimen (maybe that's why I am getting downvoted here). I would also say it keep me very happy so far. So I wish good luck to those who choose that instead :)
danielnicollet··on For the First Time, the TSA Meets Resistance
What about trans-gender passengers? Will they bar a women with a penis from boarding her flight because she "seems to have a fake explosive penis between her legs". SFO is going to go down with this ;-)
danielnicollet··on My dalliance with smart drugs - and the lesson I learned
I never even thought of taking a drug to get ahead or be better at what I do. I don't think I knew people did self-medicate to improve their productivity either. It seems so wrong to me and so unauthentic. The brain is a fragile mission critical component we know so little about. I am amazed so many seem here discuss it so candidly. Good luck and make sure you don't turn into veggies by 50 y.o.
danielnicollet··on The age fallacy of entrepreneurship.
You can call yourself anything you want, entrepreneur, CEO, etc. It may be a fallacy to measure entrepreneurship by age. But I am not sure it really matters though. The only thing that matters in this game are bottom line results. If you want great results, it's better to accept the natural tendencies of the media, investors and the public and exploit them where you can. Because for every advantage you have (being young for the media and investors for instance) you'll find equal disadvantages now or later (being young for hiring more experienced execs as you grow your company for instance). Good luck!!!
