danielhooper··on Roger Penrose's Gravitonic Brains (1994)
Playing checkers seems like a well-defined task to accomplish. A computer that has "the skills of a one-year-old when it comes to perception and mobility." is not defined at all. Mobility? Perceiving what?
danielhooper··on Square Service Outage
AFAIK offline mode only works if you have successfully completed a non-offline transaction within the last 24 hours.
danielhooper··on Invest in books
Get a library card. A bookshelf full of books that you aren't going to ever re-read or share is just decoration.
danielhooper··on Hiring without whiteboards
As an iOS developer, I would still get whiteboard questions ranging from "reverse this string" to "find all the anagrams in this array and print them in this specific fashion", usually with iOS specific trivia about view controller lifecycle, UIKit (whats the diff between frame and bound?), etc. sometime before or after the whiteboarding
danielhooper··on Chekhov: “Cultured people must, in my opinion, satisfy the following conditions”
Out of curiosity, how long did you have to study Russian before you could enjoy Chekhov's stories?
danielhooper··on Ask HN: How would you set up national certification for software engineers?
I can imagine it now. An alternate reality where all programmers are "certified software engineers" except for a handful of hobbyists. I log onto hacker news, click on the top article, and read about how "certified" programmers cannot fizz buzz.
danielhooper··on Stocks are up but 80% of the value is held by the richest 10%
6 months is not conservative. We aren't all programmers with a list of recruiters to talk to when we lose our jobs.
danielhooper··on Stocks are up but 80% of the value is held by the richest 10%
Please travel more.
danielhooper··on Ask HN: How much did you pay for your brand identity?
You can pay for a stylist to buy your clothes or cut your hair, but it won't change whether or not you are a fashionable person. That's you and your personality and you can't pay for a service to change that. The same is being said of businesses with no substance in which to create identity out of.
danielhooper··on Why I left Mac for Windows: Apple has given up
It's well understood by many startups and established companies that developing for iOS often takes priority because there's a larger group of users willing to pay more money than their android counterparts
danielhooper··on Syntax is the last thing you should design
Going to join the "I strongly disagree" camp with Swift as my example. The expressive syntax in combination with the strict type system quite often challenges me to design succinct app architecture.

I personally prefer to omit type information from naming, so for example I would declare a username text field of a view controller as so: `let username = UITextField`. Other devs might declare the text field as a `usernameTextField`, and somewhere else declare a variable called `username` to represent the string from the text field, but now you have a view controller concerned with both the textfield and the data from the textfield. By naming the textfield simply as 'username', I force myself to not have a 'username' value anywhere else in this particular view controller, which results in forcing myself to entirely separate these concerns. I can elaborate on this if someone is interested in trying to get this working in practice.

danielhooper··on Porsche Design Book One
Everything under the Porsche Design moniker is ugly as shit. A quick google image search of `porsche design` reaffirms this. Even their most plain and simple external drive designs are (at least to myself) tacky looking. I don't mean to be inflammatory about it but I can't be the only one to think this is ugly?
danielhooper··on Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around?
> how many would pay $1/month to be able to communicate their points more clearly?

My guess is less than 10,000.

danielhooper··on A Physicist Who Denies That Dark Matter Exists
I used to feel pretty similar, but then I realized that the people working on these problems are even more skeptical than I am. That's why they work on this stuff. If there is a name for this specific kind of bias, let me know!
danielhooper··on World of Tanks streamer dies during 24-hour Twitch marathon
It might seem reactionary, but shouldn't streaming services (Twitch) have rules or guidelines against these kind of endurance streams?
danielhooper··on Top Hat Raises $22M to Go After Pearson, McGraw-Hill
I called them out on this in one of the Who's Hiring posts they always comment on. This seems like a reallllyyyy obvious problem for them...
danielhooper··on Inferring Your Mobile Phone Password via WiFi Signals
The defence is definitely to not use public wifi. This technology works because they can identify small target windows (e.g. you just accessed a URL to login to your bank account) in which to make and process these measurements. Any kind of abnormal obfuscation of your device should introduce enough noise to prevent this attack from generating any meaningful data from the victim, but I'm running on assumption.
danielhooper··on Inferring Your Mobile Phone Password via WiFi Signals
I clearly did not read into this enough as it is more impressive than I had remembered. It's quite the eye-opener on how much unique data there is out in the wild...
danielhooper··on Inferring Your Mobile Phone Password via WiFi Signals
Some weeks back I read a post here about detecting people in rooms by measuring how the physical body interferes with the wifi signals. I wouldn't have imagined someone could extract useful information at this small of a scale. wow!
danielhooper··on Ask HN: What sort of side-projects are useful for getting jobs?
Who is this advice for? UC Berkeley grads? If you don't have personal projects or previous professional experience to talk about the only thing you have to bring to an interview is a university degree. Are you proposing the OP just does nothing? How is OP supposed to land an interview in the first place?
danielhooper··on Ask HN: How to make coding at home not feel like work?
Can you do your personal programming at work? Just stay an extra hour or two. That might not align with management/company culture, but maybe you can make an effort to change that.

It's expensive, but electronic music production can be a lot of programming, and offers a whole new set of challenges to solve. It's a great activity that is analogous to computer programming depending on what tools you use. Obviously much more refreshing to come home to after work. If you're not trying to just improve your coding ability and knowledge, I think you could really enjoy this.

danielhooper··on Lavabit Reloaded
This is being down voted but is an interesting point. Is a privacy service in which public record is available for its purchases ever truly private? Maybe its extremely difficult for others to see your communications, but if someone (or some law-enforcement agency) knows you have paid for a private communications service, does that make you a candidate for further scrutinization? I think so.
danielhooper··on Welcoming Fabric to Google
Knowing Google's reputation with abandoning developer tools and services, can anyone offer suggestions as to possible alternatives? Or counterpoints as to why I shouldn't fear this service degrading over the next year or two? We're currently using Fabric and Crashlytics for our iOS app where I work and this news has prompted us to research alternatives.
danielhooper··on Ask HN: What was your greatest accomplishment in 2016?
Hey! Email me at danielhhooper @ gmail dot com I would be glad to help you.
danielhooper··on Ask HN: What was your greatest accomplishment in 2016?
I landed a great job as an iOS developer at a great startup in Toronto.

I accomplished this by building a unique iOS game that uses animated gifs for jigsaw puzzles. I wrote the app several times, and after giving it enough time, I was able to incorporate functional and generic programming concepts to reduce my code down to less than 1,000 lines.

I also ditched my resume because I didn't have substantial previous experience developing software (just 3 months) nor a degree of any sort. I just took videos of all my apps and put them up on a dead simple github pages site: https://danielhhooper.github.io

I interviewed and accepted an offer the following week.

danielhooper··on No tipping means better business
Tipping is great because it provides the customer with some leverage to pay a price they feel is fair. Not to mention it allows many many many many people to live somewhat comfortably despite working in what would be considered a lowly occupation. We haven't even talked about how service workers are salesman and saleswomen who are provided the opportunity to be compensated more for greater achievement, and the business in turn as well.

It sounds like the people who dislike tipping are the same people who struggle to stand up for themselves to salespeople, and feel pressured to pay extra just to remove themselves from the social setting. I don't mean to be accusatory, but I believe it's likely this is a major motivating factor to dislike tipping despite the complete advantage it gives to you as a consumer.

danielhooper··on Apple is losing its focus again – and this time, there's no Steve Jobs
Sorry for being off topic, but I'm not finding any substance in these Apple/Mac articles or subsequent conversations we've had lately. I wanted to make a separate ask HN post for this but does anyone else feel like this website has been oversaturated pointless armchair views on The Current State of Apple™? In other words I feel as though lately this type of content has been as rubbish as say, arguing about video game consoles...
danielhooper··on My Pixel has a manufacturing defect
Restoration Hardware is similar.
danielhooper··on Artists who survived brain injuries but found a new craft
What synths do you have? Sounds like you have some modular.
danielhooper··on Amazon Go
Ideally, you will connect with your local community because everyone in your community has the financial freedom to pursue physical or creative activities and is not burdened with an 8 hour commitment to do nothing with themselves all day. I believe this is the future we should be working towards.
