dangerface··on Using your phone as a software development platform
> If OOP was a solution to anything really, we wouldn't need design patterns, clean architecture, or SOLID design principles.

He's not wrong. I loved moving from C to C++ polymorphic code is such a cool concept but after a while you realise it really doesn't solve anything on its own.

Then you start to encapsulate everything in an attempt to separate concerns then you realise that separation of concerns is actually quite easy if you separate data from function and make sure functions have no side effects, something OOP encourages the exact opposite of.

Yes I am sure. [0] The first Canadian school I looked at on google maps doesn't even have a flag pole never mind the flag. If this school was in America I would expect it to be burnt out by the end of the day for such a disgusting display.

dangerface··on How far can you go without a message queue?
> So, if they make so much sense, why are queues left out of the first implementation

Sorry what? How do they make so much sense? The article gives a full backstory and diagrams for event sourcing pattern it says every one knows but has no description as to why a message queue makes more sense than event sourcing?

I am so fed up of reading half way through an article just for the author to throw away their attempt at being informative and go straight into a sales pitch.

I think I am just going to say event sourcing makes so much sense and call it a day, I clearly don't need their product.

dangerface··on Tell HN: Spammed by a Hacker News Enthusiast
Most people don't want to be an asshole but it's easy to convince oneself it's not a big deal if you only think of yourself.

Once you know people have a problem with it you lose your justification, you can continue sure but now you know you'r the asshole. It's harder to knowingly be an asshole than it is to be an asshole and lie to yourself you aren't.

dangerface··on A Digital Euro
> all the stupid rules that feel so far fetched in a European society. And all the security nightmares credit cards come with.

Those rules are written by the EU and then implemented by visa and master. If we cut out visa and mastercard we won't be cutting out the clowns causing problems but handing the whole system over to them.

This is much more like migrating to a new server without the new server to migrate to, yes the old serve is gone forever.

Its very much a US thing. Sure other countrys have flags and they like them but Americans really take it to a whole other level. In the uk every school I wen't to had a flag pole but would only fly a flag on special occasions such as sporting events and we would fly sports flags. In America they seem to worship their flag when I see they are scared to let it touch the ground.

From the outside it looks like Americans value the flag more than they value other Americans, in the uk we value brits more than we value the British flag as the flag is just a representation of the people.

Religious freedom is just marketing like equal rights for all men, its easy to say and then debate what is a valid religion or who is a valid human.
dangerface··on The EU Commission accepts high error rates when checking chats
What evidence is there that spying on the public will reduce child molestation? When you consider that the majority of perpetrators are family members how would spying on the publics chat help detect or prevent that? I don't think there are many child molesters boasting about it tbh. Would such a law prevent child molestation or prevent molesters from talking about it?

There is no evidence and little reason to believe this will protect children. Before infringing on innocent peoples privacy there must be some evidence that it will actually help protect children. There is no evidence to support this nor calls to study the efficacy idea. Makes me think protecting children is not the intention of their spying.

dangerface··on Ask HN: Should I log errors, throw errors or both?
I have to say I hate that. I do not miss the "Is this actually failing?" debate I get every time I write C.

Joel complains about exceptions being invisible but how is returning errors any better?

If a function returns 0 has it failed?

If it has failed why? Has it lost connection? No results? A generic no? If another function from the same library returns a 0 is that also an error or is error reporting inconsistent?

It's impossible to know what is being communicated to the point I don't even know its an error.

dangerface··on Ask HN: Should I log errors, throw errors or both?
I throw exceptions for anything that isn't an expected result. Request a row from a database that doesn't exist throws an exception NoResults let the caller decide what to do.

The caller can then recover from the exception by searching else where or using a default etc.

If the exception can not be recovered then its an error. If its a user error like asking for a result that doesn't exist ill notify the user without logging. If its an unexpected error the exception is unhandled and bubbled up to a global exception handler that logs to a file.

Some times ill setup an email on error if the code is important enough.

dangerface··on Gravity Payments CEO Dan Price resigns
Its generaly attributed to Sir William Garrow a British barrister who made the notion that people should be innocent until proven guilty in trial in 1791. before that the justice system was guilty until proven innocent, so the salem witch trials in 1692 would absolutely be under guilty until proven innocent and unfair trials like that are what changed people mind to mob justice where guilt is assumed not proven.
dangerface··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
If an applicant asked me these questions the answer would be no to all of them.

Do other organisations put that many limitations and control on their developers?

Is there any space for developers to take charge of their own projects and have project ownership?

dangerface··on The World Has Passed ‘Peak Agricultural Land’
> How exaclty are farmers "stealing" from the soil, when the same patch of land has been used for monocultures a hundred years or more?

Before the world wars and invention of artificial fertiliser we didn't have monocultures. On the scale of agriculture artificial fertiliser and factory farming is extremely new not something we have been doing for hundreds of years.

The issue is that when the crop is harvested you are taking nutrients out of the field into the crop then taking that crop off the soil. These nutrients need replaced or you will deplete the field. A hundred years ago this would come back in the form of rotations of crops and animals that leave dung to fertilise the land today its done with artificial fertiliser which provides lots of nitrogen but is missing all of the trace nutrients that where removed.

Better artificial fertiliser could help but there are other problems with artificial fertiliser like run off where rain remove the fertiliser from the field and dumps it into wetlands and rivers which are poisoned by the massive amounts of nitrogen.

The old way was sustainable but required lots of manual labour the new way is not sustainable but is easily automated. The real sustainable solution is to automate the old way of farming.

dangerface··on The World Has Passed ‘Peak Agricultural Land’
> Edit: and there are ways of maintaining a healthy soil without animals. I have done it in a very small scale for my plantations (just 40m2) and there are examples of people doing it on a much larger scale. I have yet to find data about yields though, but they seem competitive.

Gardening isn't farming. All crop farms of any scale use artificial fertilisers that wash off the land an poison our rivers and wetlands its not sustainable. Cutting out artificial fertilisers and gmo crops would cut our crop production by 60%.

We need to go back to our old style of farming before the world wars where we rotated between crops and animals and used the animals dung as fertiliser.

dangerface··on Gravity Payments CEO Dan Price resigns
Im pretty sure it was implemented because of the amount of mob justice that was going on during the period of the salem witch trials.

> Multiple credible accusations, corroborated by contemporaneous accounts, collated by a reputable journalist is definitely enough to call the accusations founded.

Journalists build a narrative and then find facts that fit their narrative. If you continue to form your opinions on accusation you will find yourself easily manipulated by those who know how journalism works.

dangerface··on Please do not use Python for tooling
Tooling for embedded development? Please back in my day you just didn't get any tooling even the programer was left to the manufacture to make.

> It is kind of like demanding you understand and set the timing advance on your car's engine. Why on earth would you even want to know of it, much less fiddle with it?

Developers are not end users a technical understanding and capability is to be expected you aren't talking about the tooling for a pc you are talking about the tooling for a microcontroller.

A more accurate example would be the timing belt manufacture expects the car manufacture to provide their own tooling to put the timing belt on their engine, in the same way a pic manufacture expects you to provide your own tooling.

The end user is whoever buys the device you build with the pic in the same way that the end user of a timing belt is the person who buys the car not the manufacture that makes the car.

dangerface··on Ask HN: Nightmares about Missing Work

This is so interesting I had the same feeling and now as an adult it seems so strange, school was supposed to be about learning not testing what you already knew so why was I worried about it? Strange

dangerface··on Ask HN: Weird Credit Card Stuff
Sounds like money laundering, some one gets your credit card info then uses it to make purchases with clean money then pays off your credit card with dirty money. Make sure it all balances out to 0 at the end of the day and you probably won't notice for a while.

Report it as fraud and get a new card.

dangerface··on Ask HN: Why am I always stuck working on legacy software
> Am I a bad engineer or do I come across wrong to management ? My performance reviews go great. What can I do or change ?

You are given legacy projects because you are one of a small group that has experience with those legacy projects. You work on legacy projects getting more experience than anyone else the cycle repeats.

The secret is that while you work on less valuable legacy projects your knowledge is more valuable because of supply and demand. Legacy systems demand people with the knowledge to maintain them, developers chase the latest and greatest tech so there isn't much supply.

Use the experience to your advantage take ownership of the projects and suggest that the legacy code should be replaced with whatever you want and as the person with the most experience you are the ideal candidate to lead the new development.

If this doesn't work ask for more pay or you will walk. Because no one wants to work on legacy stuff you can't be replaced and your boss will know this.

Your boss can pay you more or migrate the legacy system to a tech stack that every one knows so they don't have to pay for expertise. It's a win win for you, you get more pay or to work (realistically lead) the new tech.

dangerface··on Is it classist to be against fast fashion?
What if instead of throwing them away I give all my clothes to oxfam is fast fashion still a problem?

Im much more worried about e-waste. If it costs more to run than modern hardware thats an issue for those in the used market / developing nations. E-waste becomes useless but when fashion is out of date it doesn't affect its use-fullness.

dangerface··on Arrest of suspected developer of Tornado Cash
I understand why they arrested him but it doesn't seem like he did anything thats illegal so it will be interesting to see what charge they bring or how they intend to differentiate between tornado cash and HSBC laundering money for cartels.
dangerface··on Top Secret Rosies: The Female “Computers” of WWII
The quotes around computers is kind of annoying because they are actual computers and the machines we use are "computers"
dangerface··on Ask HN: Do you trust digital voting for the election of the President?
Theres a saying the only secure computer is one thats turned off with no networking buried in a block of concrete. I haven't heard of a technical solution which is impervious to destruction.
dangerface··on Ask HN: Do you trust digital voting for the election of the President?
If the result could be publicly verifiable like a bitcoin transaction then yea makes sense.

We could create a distributed public ledger of votes with a setup similar to bitcoin. Every vote is encrypted with malleable encryption so that I can not tell what way an individual voted but I can add up the votes and I can find which candidate has the greater number of votes. Private votes with a publicly verifiable result!

- Edit -

As far as I know all current systems are black boxes which require blind trust of the box, the company that made the box and the software inside it. This is the worst possible setup for security that I can think of.

dangerface··on Don't Use DuckDuckGo
> This is somewhat surprising and undesirable especially because one cannot turn it off.

It's surprising that when using the internet other computers you communicate with get your ip? You can opt out by going outside and not using the internet, or use tor if you want to hide your ip. Not understanding how tcp/ip works is not an excuse for accusing others.

dangerface··on Don't Use DuckDuckGo
I looked at their site and I can see what you are talking about but at the same time their protocol doesn't really do anything for privacy.

Their idea of privacy is to remove headers from https but nothing stops a website tracking their ip or putting a unique id in the url or image filename.
