i'd say it really depends on the website you're building and what you define as "using javascript"

are you comparing fully client rendering vs SSR without client JS at all? are you building a marketing site or a dashboard type tool?

there is subtly to why each decision would be made based on these.

i think HN tends to demonize JS because we're all well aware of how bad the state of a lot of web apps have become with developers only knowing react and having no background in web fundamentals or accessibility.

i see no reason to completely shun JS, just use it intentionally and not reflexively.

OP is right. a quick google (hehe) shows you they require it as of 2024.
danaw··on Debunking the CIA's “magic” heartbeat sensor [video]
this is such a classic, well trodden propaganda tool i'm surprised anyone here falls for it.

tell the public about an incredibly advanced piece of tech that simultaneously justifies the $1 trillion+ military budget, makes people fear the sophistication of our government (prevent dissidence internally) and distract from otherwise embarrassing flaws in the war so far.

it's like how trump releases "proof" of aliens ever time he wants to distract from a new epstein files bombshell.

if you believe this i've got a bridge to sell you.

as we know from tesla none of these claims will actually come to fruition once these reach customers

devils advocate with no skin in the game: they're not taking any money, just "pledges". if it were a scam why not take a "pledge fee" of some kind?
danaw··on Let's Buy Spirit Air
because airplanes, routes, employees, pilots etc arent exactly easy to come by without a whole lot more time and capital expenditure
danaw··on Let's Buy Spirit Air
assuming it's an llm site, the implication here is some action needs to be taken before private equity buys it for scraps (inferred from the homepage copy)

whether it's an llm, a template or bespoke made from bytecode doesn't really matter does it?

co-op: one member, one vote. members elect leadership with standard term limits. emphasis on services, price and patron returns. dividend according to use not capital investment. members have direct engagement in financials. public companies: votes scale with shares. large institutional investors and other large share holders have most say in leadership. emphasis on "shareholder value" (eg extractive value). dividends according to shares. shareholders have only limited visibility into finances. they're very different, concluding otherwise is misguided

you're missing their point; LLM use is often a part of your evaluation at some of these larger companies and they expect you to use them heavily or you will get a lashing

danaw··on AI's biggest critic has lost the plot
ed can be verbose and he can be exaggerated but it's funny to claim that he doesn't come with receipts when his last two articles exhaustively go over the many signs of financial deceptions and other pricing issues that signal manipulation

this whole article was "i wish he made arguments the way i like"... ok then go do that yourself? its word policing at its most annoying

danaw··on AI's biggest critic has lost the plot
arguing that the reason youtube is succeeding is because of video hosting costs is hilariously misguided.

the content and creators are the only competitive advantage they have. there are MANY video hosting platforms out there but they just don't have the content to attract large audiences like youtube does. they have a strong early mover advantage

danaw··on OpenAI misses revenue, is the AI bubble bursting?
crazy idea but how about we force them to become a public entity since their entire product is built on our stolen IP?
danaw··on OpenAI misses revenue, is the AI bubble bursting?
a 2-3x pricing increase will also lose them customers and still they're likely to be bleeding cash like a stuck pig
danaw··on Sabotaging projects by overthinking, scope creep, and structural diffing
i feel a lot are missing the point here of identifying the "why" in why you want to build a project.

do you want to learn a new skill? do you want to scratch a very specific personal itch for just yourself? do you want to solve problems for others as well? do you want to build a startup/business around the idea?

all of these necessitate different approaches and strategies to research and coding. scratching an itch? maybe fully vibe coding is fine. want to learn? ditch the vibes and write by hand and ignore prior art. want to build a business? do some actual market research first and decide if this is something you actually want to pursue.

this post was a good reminder for me to identify the why as early on as possible and to be ok with just building something for myself without always having to monetize a side project which, for me, just zaps all joy from it.
