damowangcy··on Toxic Productivity
The 3x culture is the culprit, everything needs to be fast, there's so many things to do, so many dramas to binge, so many trends to chase, so many methods to get things done.

In the end, small wins become a curse, win big or go home and watch YouTube videos about productivity, on 3x.

damowangcy··on It costs $110k to fully gear up in Diablo Immortal
If I can find more progress than in my real life, 110k is a fair trade. (joke)

The flip side is, no matter how the general public criticize or hate it, it works and at times, more profitable than most startups nowadays.

The game was delayed for more than one whole year as they try to fix things up, 110k is probably an optimized figure.

That say, the game is enjoyable better than most mobile rpg but brings nothing new to the table. I would prefer it to be a pay once and for expansion though.

damowangcy··on A case against security nihilism
An industry exists when there's market, in other words when there's supply and demand. Difficult hacking increases demands and more players will join the game.

Until something changes how the Internet works, the very moment we sent something across the Internet through a service, we no longer have control over the data. Pegasus is just the tip of an iceberg and with technology become closer to us, i.e. homepods, smart electronic appliances, it is just time until all the big brands are hiring hackers to spy on their customers so that they can produce better product (make more money).

Going forward, privacy is not supposed to be a personal preference like how platforms nowadays makes us click through different settings to opt out, it is supposed to be something we all collective have out of the box and we need to work together towards that goal.

damowangcy··on Why SELECT * is bad for SQL performance (2020)
Isn't this something obvious?

There's use for the wild card, for instance if you need ad hoc query of data during development or testing.

If your table is not properly indexed however, will cause unnecessary select all query even if you didn't intend to.

Junior developer is bad for SQL performance but hey, everyone starts there, so there's nothing to be embarrassed about. Just code on!

damowangcy··on Ask HN: What weird or hard problems are you trying to solve?
Fair enough, I missed out the scenarios when I first try it since I just click on the link to download the PPT. It make sense now when I use it side by side with what I have created.

Interactive flow charts should be the main selling point, as for usage, it is up to the user.

Also the pricing model, restriction on frames and layers would chase free individual away but they are those who plays a main roles in making something mainstream. I would recommend removing the usage restriction but adding collaborative restriction. A good example for this is how Google Sheet works.

Good luck, hoping to see it being used everywhere someday.

It wouldn't work provided that how vulnerable passwords is nowadays.

I would instead tap into blockchain technology. For instance, to generate blocks for each passing seconds/minutes which randomly ties your UID to a random user. A decryption will be provided to you in 1 years period, i.e. in 2021, you will receive a hash key that will help you decrypt your blocks in 2020. You will get the exact time now if you decrypt the block. That way, by the time you get the keys, the locks will already be deprecated, unless of course you time traveled.

This has a lot of potential, usually enjoy flow charting things on draw.io. One thing though, the export to PPT is a big feature because most people will present through that but it is losing the navigation between each frame.

Also I suggest to not only market to Software engineers but people who work with data like drop-shippers, digital marketing agency, etc.

True, I don't believe anything that is marketed/advertised as "miraculous". While bullet coffee doesn't give me superpowers, it does however helped me to "replace" (skip is a superstitious word, I agreed with you) breakfasts that would otherwise be full of sugars and such. The hunger disappeared from 6am (when I wake up) until around noon.

I think diet is not just about the food and nutrients but also the lifestyle. You can't expect someone to always be taking meticulous steps in measuring their intake, most will slip away. Start trying out small adjustments to see whether you can make it a habit, else it is not a good idea.

For me, the coffee helps me stay full (physiological or physically) and don't make me grumpy the whole morning, yet still having the energy to crush it.

I am actually looking for more replacements/practices that would allow me to eat just enough and suits my lifestyle, instead of following a specific regime that is coupled with courses that they sell you.

Reading through the post makes me thinks that are we eating unnecessarily?

3 meals a day have become the basic necessity for most. Our ancestors used to eat as much as they could because there's no guarantee that they will have enough food until the next hunt. So, the body will go into a state we call "hungry", which reminds us to eat.

However with such plentiful of food available (know it didn't came easily, at least for me, grateful for it, hope that more people is out of hunger), is the feeling of hunger just a placebo effect that we trained ourselves to feel?

I am able to reduce my daily meals to 2 by having a bulletproof coffee in the morning. There's urge to eat between meals but even if I skip them, I'm fine.

Since I have a desk job, I still have plentiful of energy left in the evening for gym time.

One point to argue is nutritions but even if one is eating a lot, there's no guarantee that much of that intake is nutritional.

damowangcy··on Ask HN: How to disagree with the rest of management?
By handing in your resignation letter.

But seriously though, you might want to reconsider the choice. If you're in the management long enough, you'll realize that sometimes it's not just about doing the right thing, it's doing the thing that benefits you the most. Only by doing so, you gain power to control what you want. Even then, you'll realize that doing the right thing might not be your best option. Your job as a management is to ensure the group of people you manage is capable of accomplishing the task required by the company, not doing the right things you want.

Don't get me wrong, you can make your stand sounded, no, you should and must. However, after that you also need to take actions that could resolve the issue at hand, not just stop there, else you'll become the crybaby who is full of ideals yet never accomplish anything.

If you couldn't accept where the company is headed, trust me no amount of effort is worth to make it right, just look for a new job, you'll end up happier.

Did something similar using requests, there's a rated limit around 80+ request (not sure how long it lasted though) no matter how I delay each request.

My work around is to run in on the cloud with multiple IPs, so I just switch between. Mine's a one time thing so this is workable.

If you're querying for news, Reddit might be a wise choice, they have quite a bit of free APIs afaik.
