damnyou··on Apple's 15% Deflection Tactic
A contract can be declared unenforceable in court if it is against public policy: https://www.upcounsel.com/what-contracts-are-considered-to-b...

The goal should be to make Apple's app store model against public policy.

Package signing is definitely a thing on Linux.

damnyou··on Uber Drivers Sue Company over Pressure to Support Prop 22
It was not a law that put us in this position, it was the Supreme Court of California.

In any case, AB2257 fixes the issues with AB5 that needed to be fixed.

damnyou··on Uber Drivers Sue Company over Pressure to Support Prop 22
AB2257 fixes most of the issues of AB5.

This is not what Section 230 says and it is never what Section 230 has said.

damnyou··on A follow up to Coinbase being a mission focused company
Good. People experiencing the social consequences of expressing bigoted views, and being a little more afraid as a result, is how the world moves forward. A term sometimes used for it is the "democratization of discomfort".

The First Amendment cuts both ways.

In other words, given the rates of poverty among Black trans women, you don't want her to be allowed to exist.

Your view is not above regular politics. It is a view that's firmly embedded within the right wing of regular politics. I personally wouldn't consider it "Nazi" but would definitely consider it deeply transphobic, and exclude you from my friend circle. If I met someone with your view at work, I would avoid any interactions with them other than the minimum necessary to perform my job.

damnyou··on Tesla hacker reveals what driver-facing camera is looking for
Public transportation does not in fact exist in large parts of the US.

Our society puts so many people in impossible binds. This discussion needs a great deal more empathy for them.

damnyou··on Firefox's JIT is getting significantly faster
Well, what actually happens is that there's less pressure on web developers to make their sites faster (in contrast to other business goals) and so we reach a new equilibrium where sites perform just as badly.

Web developers aren't alone here, of course. It's the same story for systems software as well.

In general, thinking in terms of equilibriums is helpful.

This also applies if you sign up for, say, HBO from an iOS device. You can keep using the same subscription on Android but can't cancel.

If you subscribe to HBO on Google Play, you can keep using it and cancel it on iOS.

The asymmetry is bad and Apple should be held responsible for it.

damnyou··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
Yes, Apple should let you cancel by mail. And the web.

You keep making these claims that I'm sure sound more outlandish to you, and I think all of them are quite reasonable.

The purpose of a system is what it does.

Apple does send those emails, but the link to unsubscribe simply doesn't work on Linux or Android. It's the most absurd thing.
damnyou··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
Of course you should be able to cancel without requiring JavaScript.

A proof of work blockchain isn't suitable, but proof of work is one of many ways to reach distributed consensus.
damnyou··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
No, what the fuck? It's not "on me". It's on Apple to make it easy to cancel even if I no longer have an Apple product or Windows PC on hand.

Borrow a friend's PC? Spin up an AWS Windows instance? Seriously, WTF?! I can cancel my Android subscriptions from anywhere with a web browser.

For micropayments per stream, presumably.

You are talking past each other. Markets can be free in principle but not in practice for various reasons (oligopolies, monopsonies, etc).
damnyou··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
Yes, this is partly about Apple being "punished" for its success. That is a good thing. Entities that are too successful become too powerful and should be "punished" for it.
damnyou··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
In the world I inhabit, Apple is the one that intentionally makes it really hard to cancel subscriptions. You literally cannot cancel a subscription to an iOS app from an Android phone or Linux PC.

Partly through taxes, partly through printing money.
damnyou··on Laid Off, Now What?
That's a front for a network of white nationalist organizations, not an actual union.
damnyou··on Laid Off, Now What?
The "US Tech Workers" "union" is actually a front for the John Tanton white nationalist network. It is not an actual union.

It is true that some other unions like the AFL-CIO have historically opposed immigration on these grounds, though.

damnyou··on Laid Off, Now What?
This is simply not true. What you're talking about is the intent of the O-1 and EB-1 programs, not H-1B.
damnyou··on Laid Off, Now What?
Because most of the world does not have the infrastructure that the US has, and so they wouldn't be able to benefit society (as a whole) nearly as much.

Because some people are queer or from other minority communities within their home country (e.g. Dalit in India), and would be subject to discrimination, including and up to murder, in their home countries. Asylum only covers the most extreme cases and not the day-to-day discrimination that minorities face worldwide.

Because freedom of movement is an inalienable right that comes with being a human, and borders are inherently oppressive.

Because most of the world is a harsh, dangerous place, and supporting the decisions individuals have made to stay or get out, given the circumstances they're in, is inherently a moral good.

There's a big gap between kicking out and being on a level playing field, and Apple Music and Spotify certainly are not on a level playing field.

I'm really bothered by the whole notion of games as less important and "[more] optional". Playing games is a fundamental part of being human, and it is certainly more important than capitalism.
