dalore··on Emissions from 13 dairy firms match those of entire UK
It depends on the country of course. UK cows tend to be fed mostly grass.

I asked if book now should be a button or a link if it takes you to an ordering page, still not sure.

dalore··on Back of the envelope estimation hacks
50 weeks a year is very US focused. Other countries usually have 4 weeks off a year or more.

dalore··on 'Insect apocalypse' more complicated than thought
Everything you said is true, except the other way. Meat is way we thrived and evolved on. Plants was for survival only.

You're right the science doesn't lie. There is no science that shows a lifetime of meat doesn't get you far (there are some that show you excel though). There are questionable questionnaire studies that show association with processed food (and for some reason they put meat in this, further confounding it) has a very small increase correlation with risk of cancer.

Meanwhile all those athletes "thriving" on plans actually saw their performance drop.

Should "book now" be a button or a link?

It is an action, but it navigates you to the booking page. That page should have a url and should be able to be shared. But wanting to "book now" is an action and most sites have them as a button.

Most of those crops are inedible to humans or the waste products from human crops that are non saleable.

Meat is inefficient for calories, but very efficient for nutrients. Food is more than cheap calories.

dalore··on Workstream: A fast virtual computer you can use for anything
I use Paperspace's core compute machines for my IDE and dev machines. It's great not having to run everything local, can use a cheap low end laptop locally but still have a beast dev machine. If I end up hosing my dev I can just start it from the last snapshot.

Granted could probably do this with any host/cloud infrastructure. But I'm happy with it.

dalore··on Neanderthals Feasted on Seafood, Seabirds, Perhaps Even Dolphins
We sometimes call fish "steaks". I often eat tuna steaks. So to me fish is meat.

Wow to see this popup is strange as I was just implementing this yesterday.

It is blindingly fast and easy to setup.

dalore··on Body Camera Once Again Catches an NYPD Officer Planting Drugs in Someone's Car
The vast majority of upstanding Police are allowing their fellow officers to get away with it. Even if they aren't doing it themselves, they turn a blind eye and close ranks when one of their own is threatened.

So is it a few bad apples or is it the system in general?

Trickle down of course. Those Facebook employees are expected to donate their bonuses to the others in society that aren't getting any help. Isn't that what other companies are asking? People to donate their sick days?
dalore··on Progressive Web Apps Will Replace Native Apps?
Nope. I will always choose a web experience over a native. It's just plain safer. Nothing to install on device. Less likely to have malware to track everything.

Native is not just plain better.

dalore··on Event-Driven Architecture
Most computers have had more than one core and even additional cpu's like a gpu. Also things on the bus usually have their own processors. So things are happening at the same time, it might tick at the same rate that the bus allows but they communicate by events like interrupts. As far as I understand it.

To be fair I too probably wouldn't accept something as a bug until provided by a trivial reproduction case. I have seen too many developers call things bugs before looking at their own code.

Wifi is not a bigger drain than cpu when you're playing CoD on your mobile. Your smart phone now has multiple cpu's and would have a GPU. When you're doing something intensive like CoD it will fire up that GPU and suck up power.

Wifi power used will vary with a few factors, how far you away from the station, how many other wifi signals, etc.

In addition a big bright screen uses a lot more power than wifi. But that would be used either way so not part of the comparison.

dalore··on Eat This Much – Automatic Meal Planner
How on Earth did we survive/evolve to this point without counting our calories/macros?

The stone age man must have been so obese and unhealthy without all this modern counting tools.

Or perhaps we need to count calories and macros because we are eating processed junk. Eating real food and your body responds correctly.

I find it sad that society has come to this level.

So you claim/reserve a private good, with no intention to use it. Just so others can't use it?

That said, should there be some sort of central internet registry where we all registered our unique usernames which will be the same and reserved on every platform?

This reminds me of the days of EFNet where you would fight to have a username. If you stopped using it/disconnected, it was fair game.

I don't think someone would start posting malicious messages to make you look bad. They would just use it for themselves, with their own profile pic and would be obvious it's not you.

dalore··on Forcing vegan diet upon kids can lead to jail time in Belgium
Where does it say you can get B12?
dalore··on Forcing vegan diet upon kids can lead to jail time in Belgium
Perhaps you did. The documentary does sound quite compelling. There is no doubt that switching to a vegan diet from a standard processed food diet will see improvements. But those athletes built themselves up as omnivores.

Some examples from athletes in the film:

-Griff Whalen: went vegan 2014 out of the league 2016

-Bryant Jennings: went vegan end of 2013 (17-0 before vegan, 5-2 after vegan)

-Mischa Janiec: went vegan fall of 2015 - no wins 2 years after

-Kendrick Farris: went vegan 2014 -performed poorly in the 2016 Olympics

-Patrik Baboumian went vegan 2011 - 5'-7" and never ever part of the World Strong Men competition.

-Morgan Mitchell went vegan 2014... in 2017 finished 26th place world championships

-James Brett Wilks went vegan 2011, retired from MMA in 2012

- Lewis Hamiliton suffered depressive breakdown on twitter

Typically within 2 years after going vegan, performance goes down. So veganism based on many of the athletes in the film is a sub-optimal diet for athletic performance.

As to your comment about the Amazon, we aren't eating Amazon beef. You're right it's being cleared, to make way for soy and other processed food. When you buy a steak from the butcher it's not coming from the Amazon, it comes from your local butcher, from a grass fed field, using less carbon then your bananas from Panama.

Tim Rees (amongst other) have written several writeups about the "evidence" in the movie. https://medium.com/@timrees/watched-the-game-changers-now-yo...

Greenhouse gas emissions of meat is also very questionable. Here is a PhD GHG expert, who has looked a bit closer: https://www.sciencealert.com/sorry-but-giving-up-on-meat-is-...

As always it's not as so simple. I believe the place to start is with science-based facts.

dalore··on Forcing vegan diet upon kids can lead to jail time in Belgium
There is no evidence (and actually evidence to the contrary) that a plant based diet can provide all essential nutrients.

Sounds like you watched Game Changers on Netflix and now that's your knowledge. None of that was scientific at all and full of inaccuracies.

All the athletes mentioned saw their performance go down after adopting a plant based diet.

There are virtual no athletes at the top of their sport who got there on a plant based diet (plenty who started on animal and then moved to plant, but you will see their performance drop).

Animals are needed to fight climate change. Without them the soils would have no nutrients. It's a symbiotic relationship. They eat plant matter we can't. Grown on areas that we couldn't grow stuff. So they are vital to supplement our food. Going plant based would be a huge ecological disaster.

dalore··on Forcing vegan diet upon kids can lead to jail time in Belgium
It's well known that plants can't/don't provide all essential nutrients without supplementing. B12 is a major one amongst others.

Yet the reverse is true.

Sidenote: I wouldn't put much stock in Harvard school of "nutrition". They have massive conflicts of interest with companies like Monsanto and also numerous problems with their methodology like oversimplification of the issues. https://www.forbes.com/sites/trevorbutterworth/2013/05/27/to...
