dale_huevo··on Windows 10 EOL
Why is this e-waste when compared to old Mac laptops - many of which are in perfect working order, save Apple arbitrarily stopping OS updates because they were too lazy to maintain or update device drivers. Somehow MS requiring TPM2 for Windows 11 was the end of humanity as we know it, but a Mac with a T2 chip is heralded as progress.

If anything many of these PCs will enjoy a second life off eBay in someone's home-lab running Linux. One of the most popular "servers" in the home-lab community are those little Lenovo Thinkstations you see in hospitals.

Edit: if you're a sysadmin at a university, aren't you replacing machines every 3-5 years anyway?

dale_huevo··on Getting free internet on a cruise, saving $170
One of the fringe benefits of going on a cruise is that you can disconnect from the Internet for a week. Hit up the bar, make love to your wife, gamble a bit. All without your phone constantly buzzing in your pocket. If you go on a cruise to immediately open your laptop it seems like a waste of time and money.
dale_huevo··on Cray versus Raspberry Pi
> the Cray had about 160MFLOPS of raw processing power; the Pi has... up to 30GFLOPS. Yes... that's gigaFLOPS. This makes it almost 200 times faster than the Cray.

Imagine traveling back to 1977 and explaining to someone that in 2025 we've allocated all that extra computing power to processing javascript bundles and other assorted webshit.

dale_huevo··on Why Koreans ask what year you were born
> The HR person had called to phone screen him and called him "Vlad" or whatever in greeting.

Is that measurably worse than the current new normal? Call him Mr. Vladsky, tell him he's a great fit and schedule an interview, then block his number and email and never contact him again.

dale_huevo··on Zero-click searches: Google's AI tools are the culmination of its hubris
Odd that visiting Google.com these days requires at minimum two clicks, the first to dismiss the "Sign in With Google!" dialog that steals focus from the search box.
dale_huevo··on Swift at Apple: Migrating the Password Monitoring Service from Java
It's well-known Apple is a big RHEL customer, including Linux on Azure, lending credence to the saying that every Mac is built upon Windows (Hyper-V).

Fairly certain the iTunes store, their web store, etc. are all built upon enterprise Linux as well.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Use the best tool for the job. Most car owners have never looked in the engine compartment.

dale_huevo··on Updates to Windows for the Digital Markets Act
The world has been waiting for the Dunning-Kreuger bottle cap engineers to start meddling with operating system design.

If it weren't for them, I could reuse all my lightning cables rather than re-buying them all as USB-C.

dale_huevo··on Updates to Windows for the Digital Markets Act
Literally nothing stops any app from hard coding launching msedge.exe or chrome.exe
dale_huevo··on Updates to Windows for the Digital Markets Act
That's a rather melodramatic interpretation.

Have you opened a lot of .mht or .shtml files lately? What about ftp:// links? (Most browsers have removed FTP support and if HN is to be believed, FTP users should be beaten and locked in a cell with the uneducated, mouth breathing http:// users).

And in doing so, not cared enough to immediately go into control panel and change the file association manually, as you could for the last 30 years; rather, insisting you need an Easy Button (tm) to do this in one click?

This impacts like 0.001% of users.

dale_huevo··on Writing your own CUPS printer driver in 100 lines of Python (2018)
This is great.

Until now I thought CUPS drivers had to be written in C in order to link against its internal APIs.

Most inexpensive Chinese thermal printers ship with blatantly GPL violating drivers and they are precompiled binaries. Which means half the time they won't work in your situation, assuming you trust their probable malware in the first place.

dale_huevo··on Ask HN: How do you store private keys?
Nitrokey
dale_huevo··on Ask HN: How do you store private keys?
> And I really don't liek the idea of having the keys stored in the home directory in plain text.

so encrypt them.

or store them in a hardware token.

or on a USB stick (poor man's hardware token).

> There is also a risk of losing the keys if my laptop is damaged or gets stolen.

backups, full disk encryption.

dale_huevo··on Fintech founder charged with fraud; AI app found to be humans in the Philippines
I've been flagged as a potential shoplifter by the self-checkout at the grocery store based on some video analysis of CCTV footage of my hand motions. (It was wrong, of course.) After leaving the store I wondered if it really was software analysis or just some guy in India or the Philippines watching a live feed of me scanning bananas.
dale_huevo··on FBI raids home of prominent computer scientist who has gone incommunicado
Yes, apologies, original post was misworded and corrected.

Everyone is assuming this guy was maliciously 'disappeared', but no evidence has been presented proving that vs. that he vanished on his own.

Everything is rage-porn speculation at this point, like a fresh airplane accident where everyone becomes an armchair pilot.

dale_huevo··on FBI raids home of prominent computer scientist who has gone incommunicado
> This hasn't hit mainstream media yet. It should have by now.

Is it typical for the media to write stories when spies surreptitiously sneak out of a country?

I speculate this guy was long gone before the feds kicked in his door. Assuming he and his wife were indeed spies of course. Right now we cannot confirm or disconfirm that, but the narrative fits it so far.

> Disappearing people is not something the US government is allowed to do.

Do you have any sources that this guy was vanned, besides the very reliable Ars Technica comments section crying about 'fascists' and random schizos on BlueSky?

dale_huevo··on Bluesky CEO Jay Graber on her company's ascendant year and what's next
At least she has a future modeling coats once BS completes its ascendence onto the heap of tech obscurity, joining Gab and Parler.
