daitangio··on Mistakes engineers make in large established codebases
I agree that consistency is important, and also this is the real problem. There is no perfect architecture. Needs evolve. So consistency is a force, but architecture evolution (pushed by new features, for example) is an opposite force.

Balancing the two is not easy, and often if you do not have time, you are forced to drop your strong principles.

Let me do a simple example.

Imagine a Struts2 GUI. One day your boss ask you to do upgrade it to fancy AJAX. It is possible, for sure, but it can require a lot of effort, and finding the right solution is not easy,

daitangio··on Show HN: From WordPress to Hugo+Isso
Do you mean https://astro.build/blog/introducing-astro/ ? Thank you for sharing! I will take a look.
daitangio··on A quick look at OS/2's builtin virtualization
Os/2 Warp had support for windows 3.x virtualization, so little surpise for me. Also IBM developed virtualizaion tenchnology (like LPAR) long time ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_partition
daitangio··on I Didn't Need Kubernetes, and You Probably Don't Either
I created [misterio](https://github.com/daitangio/misterio) to exactly solve the same issue described in the article.

So yes, if you have a simple setup you can use a "web" of docker servers.

But if your needs are just a bit more complex, or you have a mix of different technology (rubyonrails, python flask, java spring boot) and you want to standardize the communication, the security, the performance tracking and so on, K8s is the way.

The problem is the microservice architecture: the complexity is pushed to the infrastructure by the microservices, and K8s is a super-generic way to solve that complexity.

It is like unpacking (in a exploding-kitten mode) an application server on the your Intranet.

daitangio··on Ask HN: Concerns on Keep Using WordPress
I am planning to move to Hugo for the rendering part, because WordPress is becoming a "wobbly" ecosystem in my humble opinion.

If the business around WordPress become fragile or too much exposed to backfire from Wordpress.com, a lot of company will see little incentive to proceed on this direction.

A lot of themes/plugin could start moving away. It is just a possible outcome but it is becoming a bit real every day passes without a clean solution of this litigation.

daitangio··on Ask HN: Platform for 11 year old to create video games?
Try TIC80 https://github.com/nesbox/TIC-80

Very mice, multi programming language support

daitangio··on Dokku: My favorite personal serverless platform
If you search a simpler solution I suggest

https://github.com/daitangio/misterio

I created it for managing my homelab, it works great and it is a thin layer over docker compose

daitangio··on Galois Theory
Btw, the life of Galois is quite interesting: he died very young, and was a quite clever mathematician…
daitangio··on Anyone can access deleted and private repository data on GitHub
Question: but for deleted you just mean commit to delete it? Because if you remove the commit from the repo, it should disappear.
daitangio··on Google Chrome has an API accesible only from *.google.com
I stopped using Chrome as my primary & only browser. Too much power in one hand?
daitangio··on A Git story: Not so fun this time
Very well written & nice article. I already knows a bit of the story. Just a plus: even Windows source code is on git! Which is pretty cool if you think about it.

Open source wins

daitangio··on Ask HN: Founders who offer free/OS and paid SaaS, how do you manage your code?
I am planning too this. My general recommendation is a plugin-based system. A lot of business just offer the same product as a SaaS or with integration just installed (like HomeAssistant which offers SSL certs for Alexa, or HelathChecks.io which offers Whatsup/Teams integrations).

Most of the Cusommers didn't care self-hosting, if your SaaS price is decent.

I strongly do not recommend to have two copies of the codebase, because it increase the sync time (like bug fixing portings, for instance).

Sad to say, consider protecting you from AWS/GCP/etc reselling as a service

daitangio··on An operating system for the web
Try pigshell, http://pigshell.com/ It is an interesting approach… but it is a bit old project
daitangio··on Simplicity is an advantage but sadly complexity sells better (2022)
Simple solutions are complex to design. Fullstop.

For instance the ‘do not me think’ GUIs are more complex to design than a CRUD GUI pushing all form fields in a form.

daitangio··on Redis Renamed to Redict
The title us wrong: it is a fork, not a rename if the project.
daitangio··on My favourite Git commit (2019)
A good commit message must explain the reason of the commit (i.e. fix nasty char dncoding issue). This commit is nice but far too long in my humble opinion (and I like to write!) The what is already in the commit diff. Explain the why, trust me.
daitangio··on The original magic Emacs garbage collection hack (2019)
Very clever, anyway I put a very high gc-cons-threshold in my .emacs and I never had big issues.

The reality is emacs is complex but today computers with 8GBs of ram has about 1000x memory of the original emacs target (a machine with 8 MB of RAM) and even faster processors.

Now I am in love with vscode, but I think I need to come back to emacs :) sometimes

daitangio··on DJGPP
I used and loved it. As someone said, was my door on GNU utilities under MS-DOS and worked well! I forgotten it, so thank you for the link!
daitangio··on Smalltalk simplicity and consistency vs. other languages (2022) [video]
I was excited in Smalltalk around 1999, during my Master Thesis. The sad story is Java Hotspot had more technology than ParcplaceDigitalk(Cincom) and kept growing. I love Smalltalk but Java won, even when it was closed sources. Try Squeak (or Cuius): it is beautiful, but sadly it has little traction.
daitangio··on How I destroyed the company's DB (a stupid SQL mistake)
Also always __test__ your database updates doing a select FIRST, and checking the output of your where condition. I learned this in the hard way, after a small mistake (but I was still a junior developer).
daitangio··on Google Drive files suddenly disappeared
Hum I have my Cloud Drive linked to My NAS; it is not Google Drive(), but a similar event can destroy all my home backup too I suppose.

Is it a quite dangerous idea to link your NAS go a Cloud drive?

() It is OneDrive.

daitangio··on Using Prolog as the AST
Erlang first implementation was based on Prolog, which is the mahor reason of its syntax
daitangio··on Nota is a language for writing documents, like academic papers and blog posts
I do not know.

I thing Emacs org-mode is better and less Javascript-dependant. Also https://docusaurus.io/ is very nice and flexible.

I suggest to look at these two to extend nota in similar way

daitangio··on Cockpit: Web-based graphical interface for servers
What about webmin?

I used it in the past, it has plenty of modules and parse config, so you can edit them by hand too.

https://webmin.com/

daitangio··on Meta pitches EU to charge a $10 subscription for ad-free Facebook and Instagram
Yeah this is the problem, and paying for the exact same ad-free service does not seem a solution to me.
daitangio··on Local-first software: You own your data, in spite of the cloud (2019)
Yes, for sure SaaS is easier and cheaper (for 1 month :) than BigBoxSoftware you saw years ago.

I am concerned by the threat to open source this model brings to us.

daitangio··on Running BeOS 5 in QEMU (i386) (2022)
If interested, please take a look at its up-to-date evolution

https://www.haiku-os.org

I tested on real hardware too, and it worked well

daitangio··on Erlang/OTP 26.1 Released
The heart of Elixir :)
daitangio··on Greatest “Classic” Mac Laptop: Powerbook G3 Pismo (2021)
I have still it and it was ahead of its time. With whopping 196MB upgrade and MacOSX 1.0 was a great laptop
daitangio··on Here ends the story of 10K Riders Publishing
Same for me. It is nit clear the problem they tried to solve
