dag11··on It took two days to develop Moderna’s vaccine
That's not a blanket statement that can be made, as the data is still coming in.

https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/12/fda-anal....

> He said the findings reflect an impact on blocking transmission and are very encouraging, hinting at mucosal immunity. "The data aren't conclusive but support this key benefit," he said.

Of course, if in the end vaccines don't prevent transmission, then they don't prevent transmission. But we don't know that they don't do that.

dag11··on Streaming Is Stalling: Can Music Keep Up in the Attention Economy?
> Taking time to explore the back catalogue of artists you like and taking the time to get to know music.

This complaint confuses me, as an avid Spotify user. A few times a week when I discover an artist I like, it's one click to look at their entire back catalog, listen to it sequentially, browse the artist bio, click through to the artist's social media to see what projects they're up to, right click and view who produced the tracks to find similarly-produced tracks, etc!

> it was something you waited for

I follow many artists and look forward to their upcoming albums. Why should my wait be extended by manufacturing, supply chains, my schedule to go to a shop, or my own budget to own physical media?

And I say all this as both a heavy Spotify user and a listener of vinyl records. I always get the albums I enjoy most on vinyl for higher fidelity active listening and the physical visual artwork that accompanies the disk.

There's a strong social benefit too. Being able to more comfortably spend time with friends and family you care about, even if they can't be vaccinated yet, seems worthwhile in itself. There's also the related consideration for dating, etc.
dag11··on Tig – Text-mode interface for Git
I'd like to just say that Tig has been deeply integrated into my terminal git workflow for so many years, it's one of the first things I install on any new system. I've found that practically all GUIs for git only serve to be a shell for the same commands you'd be quicker typing out in the first place, and their only unique value is a visual representation your branching and the ability to quickly stage/unstage chunks of code within a file. Tig brings these two tasks beautifully into any command line workflow, loading instantly and having good keyboard shortcuts <3

Will this block sign-in on Tesla's browser and Youtube app?
dag11··on How Normal Am I?
Some fun easter eggs in this. For example, if you click the little EU flag at the bottom, it marks you as "Curious: Yes".

Also chuckled when I came closer to the camera when prompted, and it labeled me as a "Good boy"...

dag11··on Nissan.com (is not owned by Nissan the car company)
This feels like the web equivalent of an Edith Macefield house.

dag11··on Show HN: An animated graphing calculator implemented in a pixel shader
This is cool! The Y axis seems flipped, however.
dag11··on Dependency
This is the funniest (to me) alt text I've ever read. Had me chuckling for a solid minute!
dag11··on Lights and Shadows
I love the touch of the car's reverse lights coming on when you're sliding it closer to you!
dag11··on Show HN: Rainbow – an attempt to display colour on a B&W monitor
Such a strong tarp!
dag11··on Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone
Same. Nothing was more gut-wrenching than watching the flash bombing and gassing of peaceful protestors from our rooftop. Something felt so unconstitutional and fascist about it.
dag11··on Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone
> The media coverage of it is WILD

Yep. I live three blocks south of CHAZ and it's so overblown. Conservative family from the east-coast have told me they're very worried for me, and I check fox news and see images from "Seattle" of parking lots of cars on fire. Those images were from Minneapolis last month, not even from Seattle.

As another nearby commenter said, last week when the police were here gassing us, throwing loud bombs at protestors at 1am, and having 24/7 helicopters directly overhead, it was hard to sleep. We could feel the gas blocks away. Ever since the police vacated the precinct and "CHAZ" started, things have been so peaceful and safe in this community.

dag11··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
Similarly, I have two smart outlets and one smart lightswitch in a room. One is called "Drew's LEDs", and the other is called "Drew's Heater". When I ask google to "Turn off the lights!" it turns off the switch and the "Drew's LEDs" smart outlet, but not the "Heater" smart outlet!

I definitely appreciate the effort they put into understanding the semantic nature of a device from the name I assigned it. Nowhere did I ever designate one of the smart outlets to "behave like a light."

dag11··on RFC: Let's Disrupt Dating Apps
I still haven't figured out what tags are useful for tbh. Are we able to filter by tags? Are there any common sets of tags besides the three they suggest (e.g. #sayhi)?
dag11··on RFC: Let's Disrupt Dating Apps
Grindr has been moving more and more into the "dating app" territory. As of last month they introduced the ability to pin multiple Spotify songs to your profile just like on Tinder. That doesn't aid hooking up, that aids self expression and find other users you relate to.
dag11··on RFC: Let's Disrupt Dating Apps
That's not true, we can the comment people leave when they like before we like/match them back. The thing is that they can only leave a singular comment/message.
dag11··on Happiness is more like poetry than algorithms
What if what makes me happy is change with a base of general contentment? I'm pretty happy all the time, and I attribute it to often trying new things.

Therefore happiness isn't boring if what makes you happy is being not-boring. Just abstract one level up :)

dag11··on Just how fast is too fast when it comes to web requests?

Why do you assert that?

dag11··on Reflections on My Career at Microsoft
> Did you really miss the word "after"?

Nope. That's why I said "so close".

dag11··on Reflections on My Career at Microsoft
Making blanket, vague criticism against "millenials" isn't particularly great discourse.

Edit: And after your edit just now adding a reference to Germany is _so close_ to being Godwin's Law? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law

dag11··on Quantum Darwinism spotted in diamond spin
What's the point you're trying to make here?
dag11··on Facebook Dating
But that strategy has the same drawbacks of swiping right on every friend you recognize on Tinder "because of course I'd swipe right, we're friends!" It always leaves the other friend wondering if maybe there was any meaning in your right-swipe.
dag11··on Time anxiety: is it too late?
Personally, this year I started getting really into Scuba diving--a sport/hobby I hardly thought about for my entire life until I tried a single "Discover Scuba Diving" dive four months ago. Lately I've been diving deep into the hobby (hah) at home and in Thailand. I've been connecting with so many other people here in Seattle and discovered a whole community that's otherwise invisible. Most excitingly, turns out there's a whole new world down there under the waves! No need to search for alien life when it's already here on earth :D

Finding this hobby has given me pretty great happiness this year. I suffer from a fair bit of existential time anxiety, and anxiety over having too many consumptive "hobbies". Diving isn't exactly a constructive hobby, but it's opened up a new avenue of happiness that isn't strictly input/output for me.

dag11··on Have Disneyland fans finally reached their limit?
Reminds me of the old saying: "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."
dag11··on The decline of the family has unleashed an epidemic of loneliness
Oh hi, I've seen your posters posted throughout Cap Hill.

I'm curious, with these kinds of apps, do you use it yourself? I've always wondered if dating as a Tinder/Grinder employee would be weird, and here I'm curious if it's weird in a more platonic world.

dag11··on Google launches new “portal” HTML element
What I don't understand is that many websites frame-bust to prevent phishing and click-jacking attacks on their content. But if Google wants to be accessible through portals, they'll have to open themselves up to the same phishing and click-jacking vulnerabilities, right?
