daemonologist··on Ask HN: Last time you wrote code?
A couple of hours ago. I do it when I need a small change and already know ~exactly what I want to type (which happens frequently), or when I get fed up with the yapper (which happens a couple times a day).
daemonologist··on Tell HN: I'm 60 years old. Claude Code has re-ignited a passion
I think both opinions are pretty well-represented here, but the people who aren't so happy about generated code are well into the acceptance phase at this point. (Myself included.)
daemonologist··on Where things stand with the Department of War
It's been in use by overly earnest DoD officials and Raytheon salespeople. But no normal person would use it unironically.

However I suppose Amodei in this context can be included in the former group.

daemonologist··on Converting dash cam videos into Panoramax images
Hah. Panoramax requires you to convert your video to geotagged images; Google Street View requires you to convert your images to video. (For the "blue line" continuous coverage. They also require 360 panos, but still.)
daemonologist··on AMD will bring its “Ryzen AI” processors to standard desktop PCs for first time
Adjusted for inflation, the last time prices (/GB) were this high was May 2011; the tail end of the 2009/2010 shortage. Aside from a brief glut in 2008, it wasn't really cheaper before (than it is now) though. Of course RAM is much faster these days, but also in 2011 most people had no more than 4 GB of system memory and 512 MB VRAM.

daemonologist··on MacBook Neo
When I was in college the exam nanny software required Windows, and not in a VM. (I had a Windows desktop at home, so I just remoted into that to take exams.) This was a few years ago but much less than 15.

Also most "professional" CAD software is Windows-only, which is going to affect a big chunk of engineering majors.

daemonologist··on LLMs can unmask pseudonymous users at scale with surprising accuracy
I think Claude is guessing (educatedly - northern midwest does seem plausible). There's probably enough for the feds to track them down, but not me or an LLM.
daemonologist··on LLMs can unmask pseudonymous users at scale with surprising accuracy
A JDM car, probably, to be precise. I think they lived in Japan for at least a little while, e.g.: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44679406#44686142
daemonologist··on iPhone 17e
Under-screen fingerprint readers are definitely inferior - slower and less reliable. I (Android user) wish they'd revert to back-of-device readers, which were amazing.

(I also wish for smaller screens and no-adhesive battery swaps though, neither of which seems likely to happen.)

daemonologist··on GPU Rack Power Density, 2015–2025
I don't know if I would call this a "technical deep dive."
daemonologist··on Americans are destroying Flock surveillance cameras
Lol that's almost literally the cheapest possible option. You can get these for $3-4 (on a board and with a mipi cable and everything) from China - I have a dozen in a box that I bought to test out a camera array idea before shelling out for nicer sensors.
daemonologist··on Sub-$200 Lidar could reshuffle auto sensor economics
They use LIDAR maps in service areas, but might be using Street View data for training? (I imagine it would be really, really difficult to build a useful simulator with just SV imagery, but probably also quite valuable to have the variety of environments.)
daemonologist··on Ask HN: Is there a reliable way to tell if an image is AI generated?
Google watermarks their images; I believe it's a sort of subtle rainbow striping that can survive basic filters/transforms. https://deepmind.google/models/synthid/ Other providers might do something similar but I'm not aware of any.

Otherwise no. There are lots of common tells, and some classifiers that might be better than guessing (at least within a given test set) but nothing reliable.

daemonologist··on NanoClaw moved from Apple Containers to Docker
I'm sure whatever LLM FemtoClaw calls out to will also write a blurb about its growing adoption in production enterprise applications. This sentiment is probably very well represented in the training data.
daemonologist··on Skip the Tips: A game to select "No Tip" but dark patterns try to stop you
I'm not aware of a specific term, another than just conditioning, but I am reminded of "banner blindness" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banner_blindness

(I was definitely expecting a level to swap the contrast eventually as a trick.)

daemonologist··on U.S. had almost no job growth in 2025
Historically both directions are common, but in 2025 every month was revised down from the preliminary report except October. (They were revised down a lot in 2023 and 2024 as well fwiw.)

daemonologist··on Officials Claim Drone Incursion Led to Shutdown of El Paso Airport
Maybe fits the "DoD is shooting something at some kind of incoming drone" explanation - they know they're shooting _from_ the top of the trapezoid but in terms of direction, only that they're vaguely facing south. (Doesn't really explain why the TFR doesn't extend into Mexico though.)
daemonologist··on High-Altitude Adventure with a DIY Pico Balloon
I agree, but apparently that's the rule.
daemonologist··on High-Altitude Adventure with a DIY Pico Balloon
Oh for sure - in fact I believe weather balloons usually use hydrogen (not for demos, but for large scale/daily actual weather purposes). It's just amusing that the regulations effectively encourage use of the more... energetic lifting gas.
daemonologist··on Voxtral Transcribe 2

daemonologist··on High-Altitude Adventure with a DIY Pico Balloon
FAA wants you to use hydrogen. >roll safe<
daemonologist··on High-Altitude Adventure with a DIY Pico Balloon
If you keep the payload under 4 pounds I believe it's theoretically unregulated in the US except section 101.7 - don't create a hazard. I would still try to be approximately in compliance with part 101 though. Not a laywer.
daemonologist··on Grid: Free, local-first, browser-based 3D printing/CNC/laser slicer
You mean like PCBs? KiCad is pretty popular.
daemonologist··on TeraWave Satellite Communications Network
My read was that they're going to have 144 Gbps RF for both regular users and their ground station gateways, and 6 Tbps optical for satellite-satellite back haul, but then you can also buy direct ground-MEO access to a back haul link. (Presumably MEO-only because it's hard to maintain the link to a fast-moving LEO satellite?)

They don't seem to mention using optical for their own ground stations - maybe too unreliable?

daemonologist··on Ask HN: What are your best purchases under $100?
They last longer than the others (though I have still put holes in many pairs) and as mentioned have the warranty. I prefer the fit of Smartwool but still wear almost exclusively Darn Tough for the durability.
daemonologist··on US electricity demand surged in 2025 – solar handled 61% of it
I'll bite: the US dedicates about 5 billion bushels of corn a year to ethanol production [0], which is basically solar with extra steps. At a generous yield of 190 bushels/acre [1], this is 26 million acres dedicated to ethanol production (WRI puts it at 30m [2]).

Depending on who you ask, it would take somewhere between 2.5 [3] and 13.5 million acres [4] of solar to supply total US electricity demand, including storage and maintenance etc. We could double it to be safe and account for the reduction in ethanol production, and it would still all fit within the land currently used for corn ethanol. (btw this works out to a >10x increase in efficiency over ethanol.)

Of course I do agree that there's lots of less productive land (desert in the west, grazing land in the plains, and parking lots/rooftops everywhere) that should be used when available. But even in the midwest and east the land use is not a problem.

daemonologist··on Pocket TTS: A high quality TTS that gives your CPU a voice
Parakeet is not really more accurate than Whisper, but it's much faster - faster than realtime even on CPU: https://huggingface.co/nvidia/parakeet-tdt-0.6b-v3 . You have to use Nemo though, or mess around with third-party conversions. (Also has a big brother Canary: https://huggingface.co/nvidia/canary-1b-v2. There's also the confusingly named/positioned Nemotron speech: https://huggingface.co/nvidia/nemotron-speech-streaming-en-0...)
daemonologist··on Ford F-150 Lightning outsold the Cybertruck and was then canceled for poor sales
Yep, my parents had an old Honda Odyssey (minivan) that exactly fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Comical that some pickups can't quite measure up.
daemonologist··on Roam 50GB is now Roam 100GB
I assume they want to attract as many customers has possible while they have that monopoly - eventually they're going to need to compete with Amazon (Leo) and China (Qianfan, although I assume it'll be banned in the US). The cost of the phased-array terminals probably means there will be some stickiness.

Also as has been noted, in some markets they do compete on price: https://restofworld.org/2025/starlink-cheaper-internet-afric...

daemonologist··on Ask HN: If you had $10M in the bank, would you still show up to your job?
If I had $1M in the bank I would leave (probably to start my own thing, but maybe to volunteer or even just take a risk on a new job).
