daemon13··on A collection of small study projects which teach basic systems coding in Python
If this is the case, I think it would be to have two solutions - bash one-liner and a Python one, so that it would be easier to understand benefits & drawbacks of both.

daemon13··on How We Found All Of Optimizley’s Clients
Hi chaps, some heads-up

when I tried to access your naked url to get info about pricing, I got flash message that in summary says that your https is broken, then I got this

https://nerdydata.com/

"This domain has just been registered for one of our customers! Domain registration and webhosting at best prices."

Probably you should fix it.

Otherwise, good idea and useful tool. Also, probably 10 creds is not enough for test-drive. Would suggest to move this up to accomodate occasional users - i.e. if I need/use a couple of times a month I will not bother to register/use credit card/etc. Charge regular heavy users ;-)

Are you Sarah's colleague, by the way?

That is correct, but ONLY when people (specifically kernel maintainers) produce much below acceptable standards. In case I am missing smth - can you point to an e-mail where Linus was cursing at a newcomer (i.e. not kernel maintainer)?

>> But if you can tell the code is wrong, then give reasons for why it is wrong, tell them you can not commit until those reasons are corrected, and do so in a polite manner. In addition, by providing resources, you make your own job easier as the quality of patches continues to improve in quality, you retain talent, and foster new talent within the software community.

One of the problems with assumptions here is that kernel maintainers by definition shall know that their code is wrong and why it is wrong . If this is not true, they shall not be kernel maintainers.

Another one is that Linus does not need to retain talent that can not perform to acceptable standards.

Please note that acceptable standards are different for different people.

The difference is that Linus resorts to such communication for a reason versus you doing this just to prove your point.

daemon13··on What happened to innovation?
Existing model of financing long-term game-changing next-big-thing companies via equity dilution with angel/venture financing is less optimal from the founders' perspective than pursuing another feature start-up.

More risk, less equity, success is uncertain, reward far away in the future - why bother with making world better?

My 2 cents :-)

P.S.: a better model might be if the founder pursuing next-big-thing commits to certain ROI for investors (2-3-5 times on capital), thus increasing this founder's potential upside and motivation to go the hard way. Critique and suggestions are welcome.

daemon13··on Product > Strategy > Business Model
I've been into strategy for 15+ years.

In my humble opinion this Product > Strategy > Business Model is suitable for the current bunch of feature start-ups that aspire to be acquired by big cos.

If you want to do it right, then it is the other way around.

1. You check the market you want to compete/be in.

2. Then you understand which business models work and which don't and why. You choose several to start with.

3. Then you define your strategy, i.e. What do I need to do to disrupt current market leaders?

4. Then you develop product(s) that fit your strategy and business models.

So if you want to do smth serious the right sequence is Market > Business Models > Strategy > Product(s)
