On HN, copy/paste is usually a safe bet (with a few exceptions): https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

If you mean in general, Wikipedia sums it up pretty well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_case

Would you elaborate on what you mean by this? I don't follow.

dabber··on Why does nuclear power plant construction cost so much?
If you mean the public, I'd expect a lot of people, if it were presented right, considering how often the cost of energy comes up in political discussion

If you mean congress, I think the more important questions are - who would lobby for it? - who would lobby against it?

dabber··on The continuing tragedy of CSS
const assertions work well: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/typescript/announcing-typescr....

There is an example in the "Objects vs Enums" section of the Enum docs, at the bottom of the page: https://www.typescriptlang.org/docs/handbook/enums.html#obje...

dabber··on The continuing tragedy of CSS
There aren't many. Enums[0] are probably the most common.

dabber··on Only people building software systems get to have opinions on how they get built
This more or less describes a lot of how I view software industry Twitter.

Tweet threads on topics like this are rarely deep and thoughtfully considered, and when they are, an article or blog post would always be a better format.

> the reason VSCode is as good as it is now is because it's has had increasing parts of it being re-written in C or C++

Is that true? I've heard that said before but I've also heard that's not true. I haven't been able to find anything indicating any parts of it are written in C/C++ either. The GitHub repo for VScode doesn't have any C in it; infact it doesn't have much but JS/TS:

dabber··on Ask HN: Is it a good time to switch to Ubuntu 18.04 desktop?
For a work machine my advice is to make sure the tools you depend on work well on 18.04. Docker for example didn't have a stable version in their repos until June 22nd. Other tools like MySQL Workbench and the Redis equivalent (who's name escapes me) do not have 18.04 compatible versions.

Otherwise, Kubuntu 18.04 has been very stable for me for several months.

dabber··on Filezilla installer is suspicious again
I posted this further down the thread but may as well say it here too.

Cyberduck[1] was what I moved to after the FileZilla installer on Sourceforge forced me to wipe & reinstall Windows a few years back. It's available for MacOS and Windows, GPL3 licensed[2] and worked great for me at the time. I've since moved to Linux so I haven't been able to play around with any of the newer features/versions but it would be the first thing I tried if I switched back today. Definitely recommend taking a look.

dabber··on Filezilla installer is suspicious again
WinSCP seems to be a popular recommendation. When I was a Windows user after the FileZilla/Sourceforge incident I switched to Cyberduck[1]. I really enjoyed it at the time and it seems it's gained many more features since.

dabber··on Giteabot account was compromised
Haha, I appreciate your typo in my username. When I created this account a little over two years ago I mistakenly dropped the "l" and didn't realize for a few months (having only copied it from a pw manager.) By that point what was done was done. Years later it makes me a bit happy to think people may actually be reading it as it was intended.

dabber··on NSA collected 500M U.S. call records in 2017, a sharp rise: official report
>According to all the documents published so far, the NSA does none of these except monitoring public social media posts.

From the first paragraph of the article linked here:

>The U.S. National Security Agency collected 534 million records of phone calls and text messages of Americans last year, more than triple gathered in 2016, a U.S. intelligence agency report released on Friday said.

If I remember correctly, the author of this site hangs around here and last time the site came up he had mentioned there used to be a free API but it had to be taken down because of constant abuse by scammers.

Its also possible I'm thinking of another similar site, if that's the case I apologise.

Not the parent but every time this question gets asked here it usually gets a few responses along the lines of "the more specific the topic the better the content/community generally is" and I'd agree. A few I enjoy are r/homelab, r/programming, r/Economics, r/networking, r/AskHistorians, and r/ColorizedHistory.

dabber··on Insider trading has been rife on Wall Street, academics conclude
I'm honestly not sure why your getting downvoted. Maybe the "takes money to make money" line? Otherwise that seems like reasonable advice. If you can't max out your IRA every year then that's just how it is but it's certainly a good idea to contribute what you can. Right? Could someone shed some light if I'm missing something?
dabber··on Boring Flamethrower
To me, it's interesting because it appears to be a somewhat novel approach to both fundraising and marketing a moonshot company.

Perhaps I'm wrong in thinking this is novel though; it's possible people just like when Boring co. makes a marketing push.
