d4n3··on Show HN: Phantom JS interactive editor
The thing with phantomjs and webfonts is that it has an old webkit version which has some bugs with webfont support.

Theres a branch from a phantomjs contributor on github that has bugfixes for webfonts support backported:

https://github.com/Vitallium/phantomjs/tree/fix-WOFF-file-su...

I use phantomjs for html to image rendering and I managed to get webfont support working with a custom build from that branch (working on Heroku)

d4n3··on Ask HN: Is it okay to copy someone else's idea?
Your're right. There's too much competition in that space.

d4n3··on Google Play (Android App Store) does not work at all unless you enable Equifax
Their server certificate is from Equifax Secure Certificate Authority, disabling it will make the https connection fail.

To my knowledge, verifying the server certificate from a local CA store does not send data to the CA itself, do you have any reason to think otherwise?

d4n3··on How I became a password cracker
The actual output from the bcrypt library is: [salt]$[hash]

You don't set the salt yourself, the library generates it from from a secure RNG.

For someone that's not that into security, it's easy to use and hard to get wrong.

d4n3··on Logical fallacies
Have you considered the .is TLD?

d4n3··on Opera moves to WebKit
Opera makes most of its revenue on mobile, and these days, mobile web = webkit.

I don't think gecko was ever a serious choice for them.

d4n3··on Show HN: Conjure - A launcher for Android
Exactly, I have about 8 browsers installed and I find this very annoying. Your suggestion fixes this nicely.
d4n3··on BlaBlaMeter detects how much bullshit is in your text
It would be even better if it replaced the bullshit sections with "bla bla".
d4n3··on The Worst Argument In The World
> but the creationist has a point that some of the more fantastic parts of evolution are harder to directly observe in the same way as, say, gravity.

Honest question: which parts?

d4n3··on Which Browser Offers the Most Secure Password Storage?
Not mentioned: Opera uses a master password and Triple-DES encryption for password storage.
d4n3··on 256 CSS Classes Can Override an #id
Weight 10 in a number system with a large enough base (e.g. webkit is using base 256).

I think the intent of the specification is that 1 id is always more specific than classes for any practical number of classes.

d4n3··on JQuery 1.8b1: what’s new?
I'm not sure that works. getElementsByClassName (and Id and querySelector) returns a NodeList, not an Array, so there's no foreach, you have to convert it to an array first.
d4n3··on We don't support Internet Explorer, and we're calling that a feature
You can use the javascript shim for console in HTML5 boilerplate to make it safe for use in IE. It even logs output to a global array, so you can inspect the console output in IE.

d4n3··on AXR: Arbitrary XML Rendering
Your plan is to make a common library that all browser vendors will use and you will control?

How are you going to compete with existing browser rendering engines written with massive engineering resources and years of optimizations and convince browser vendors to replace them with your stuff and let go of control over the development?

d4n3··on My response to "CoffeeScript means giving up on JavaScript"
The point is that the semantics of CS are the same as javascript.

There is no run-time interpretation, libraries or magic like in some other to-JS languages.

You still have prototypes, function scope, closures, etc. but with a (arguably) nicer and cleaner syntax.

d4n3··on This is CoffeeScript
I often have to resort to self = @ when using jQuery in classes.

Because of how jQuery binds the queried element to this, and the fat arrow overrides this, there doesn't seem to be another way to access both your class and the jQuery element in the same function.

for instance:

    class ButtonLogger

      constructor: ->
        @clickedButtons = []

        $(document).ready => @init()

      init: ->
        self = @

        $('button').click ->
          $button = $(@)
          self.clickedButtons.push $button.attr 'id'
